A person has their dog 'dressed up' in a coat to keep it warm, and it happens to have longer hair. So they're attacked for treating their dog like a child because it's wearing a blanket coat to keep it warm, because they think all dogs keep themselves warm by growing thicker fur in cooler weather.

This just happened on my other forum. Poor girl was just trying to share pictures of her adorable little dog in his coat, and everyone jumped down her throat saying dogs don't need 'human clothes'.

I honestly think this is a pretty unsafe assumption by people. I can only assume there are people out there not keeping their single-coated breeds warm while they shiver in the cold because they think their fur does enough.
I mean, one person said only Greyhound-type dogs that are skinny and shorthaired get cold. Really?
I've had several longhaired dogs that shivered hard in cold weather, and this was when I lived in NC. I live in Canada now, I can't imagine how those same little dogs would take to our winters here!

These are the same people that shave their double-coated breeds right down to the skin every summer. :(

Augh people are ignorant.

Even me who does not dress up Teagan is going to go out and buy her a winter jacket. Even though she does have long hair. She still gets cold in the Canadian winter.

Long hair also doesn't mean they have insulation. Papillons have long hair but no undercoat so they still get cold easily.

It's a support forum I've been on for about 4 years, for teens and college students so it's no wonder people tend to know so little. But the bad advice given there is just too much sometimes.

There's a general hate for small dogs there too for whatever reason.

I bought Auggie a coat last year, because we had several weeks where the wind was INSANE. It was strong, cold, biting... it was awful. So I bought a little coat to put on him to help break the wind. He doesn't seem to be cold in normal cold air, but when the wind gets awful like that, it does bother him. Unfortunately, I don't think it really helped him that much. I would have had to wrap him up like a papoose to have really helped I think. =P But hopefully it at least took SOME of the edge off.

I don't really know why people get in such a tizzy about what other people do with their dogs. If it's not harming the dog in any way, who cares? Ugh.

Kaylee loves her jacket and she's a ninety pound dog but she won't go out when it's cold without it. You look at her and would wonder why a dog with that much blubber needs one but she gets cold really easily. No one but the owner is going to be able to tell if their dog needs a coat or not.

And honestly, even if she didn't it's no ones business but mine as long as she isn't getting hurt

I think I'm going to be ordering one for Trav soon because though it hasn't gone below 50 yet I've caught him shivering a couple times

People can just be ignorant!

I have a few hoodies and coats for Jackson in the winter because, especially with last year and the ridiculous amounts of snow we had, he NEEDED it. He adores running in the snow so when I see my dog shivering waiting by the door to go inside, I know he's cold so yes, I'm going to put a coat on him. He has a lot more fun and lasts a whole longer when he's wearing warm clothing. Plus, he does not have FUR. Many people fail to realize Yorkies have hair, like humans, not fur, no undercoat, no nothin'. If I need a coat, he typically needs a coat. That's how I judge.

And I also will put him in a t-shirt every now and then when it gets into the 50's and low 60's. Does he really NEED that? Probably not. But I think he looks cute. So hmph. ;);)

Man, I love having a forum I can go to where people know what they're doing.

I honestly breathe a sigh of relief when I come here and read knowledgeable posts haha.
Gives me some hope.

Also, we MUST MUST MUST get pictures of all of these jacketed dogs.
I need to have SOME sort of evidence to send in that they're being abused obviously.:rofl1:

Hrm, Lucy doesn't have a coat, but she does have a banana outfit. Maybe I will put that on her when it snows and see if it keeps her warmer ;)

My late Chow had a coat when we lived in IL. Not only did it keep him warm in the biting winter winds, but it also kept most of him dry.

lol i am a bit old fashioned when it comes to clothes and dogs i have a min pin and i dont think argo would like having a coat very much but i am sorta changing my mind just enough to where booties and a blanket coat during a winter storm seems only fair if we are going to be out for a while
if it goes over board i might groan a little bit not give someone a really hard time over a darn coat on a dog people need to chill out a little

I love to dress up the dogs.

When I get a little dog it will likely have a bag for me to carry it in:eek:

And my dobe loves to wear pink;)

they all live inside. Its not like messing with their coat is like screwing up how a horses winter coat grows or anything. I can say I have never put one on them for warmth-just to look cute.

Well, from what I have read, in a double-coated breed, things like shaving to the skin will mess up the coat.

Though that has nothing to do with wearing a coat of course :p

I meant a coat lol. I am one of the ones that thinks shaving a double coated breed is a no no. Tried it on our husky years ago and it never grew back right.

Put a blanket on a horse to early though and you can affect how thick their winter coat gets. Your not going to have that problem with a dog:)

Gavroche has a coat. He also has a snuggie because it was cheap, but after being put away for dummer, I have NO idea how to put the thing on him anymore.

Gavroche needs a coat in the winter because he has hardly any hair. He doesn't grow any more at all in the winter, except on his cheeks. He generally refuses to sit outside in the winter too, and I really can't blame him. His butt and other parts are completely naked, and make full contact with the ground :rofl1:

Gavroche also has a rain coat because when I was in my last apartment the bed was about 3 feet from the front door. It was easier to whip a rain coat off and let him jump on the bed than to prevent a soaking dog from jumping on the bed :p

Logan has shivered a couple times when it's gotten cold at night, and I know if in the morning both dogs are still on the bed then it must have been cold overnight because Logan usually hops off at some point. But he also hasn't really grown a winter coat yet, since it still gets 85 most days.

All 3 of mine have coats, well... more like small horse blankets... made of fleece they wear when they're going to be outside for any extended period of time. They have short coats but people assume they don't need anything since they're huge. Well, no they don't get them in the yard, but on walks or a winter hike they get coat AND booties.

:D I doubt they'd like my dogs, but they can't argue that THEY don't need coats.

River says, "No winter jammies, srsly???"
