Next will either be a corgi from the same working lines as Ada, or another dobe (black bitch this time). The dobe bitch is already "in the works" although it won't be for a few more years. And, I think the dobe will come sooner than the next corgi.

Since I just got Dixie a few months ago it will be quite a while before i get another dog. But I've always wanted a border collie. Ever since i was a kid, I loved them and have always wanted one. Maybe one day i'll get one.

I adopted her in August '06 from a shelter in Chicago, Furry Friends Foundation.
She was't dog aggressive when I adopted her.

But I KNOWKNOWKNOW that so many things can play into when a dog "turns on" with dog aggression. I know environment can play a HUGE role. I know in the shelter they can not show any signs of aggression and then shortly after you get them home, they can turn on. And it could be due to stress.

I want to adopt again, definitely. I just want to try and make sure that for one, I get a 3-4 year old (like I did with Ella) and I want the rescue to bring out a couple of dogs, even same sex ones, to see how the dog reacts to other dogs for myself.
So...preferably I'll adopt a dog that is in a foster home, so that I can get somewhat of an idea of how the dog is going to behave in a home setting.

Just an idea I know with all our dogs up till they were 2 they were easier to train after that it was alot harder. Just some first hand stuff i observed that might help. I will always have my line and rescue pits. With the pit breed how it is i feel if your going to breed you should also rescue.

Ideally, another boxer. It wouldn't be until after Molly passes (she'll be 11 in a couple months), and then depends on when we're ready for another dog, and how long it takes to find one... it could be a few years.

However my mom kind of wants a maltese... ughhhhhh. I will protest lol. I can't NOT have a boxer and I for sure don't want 2 little dogs!!

I think my next will be a boston, french bulldog, or a pug. Probably another boston though. It probably won't be for a couple more years.

Someday when I'm in a more stable living situation I'd love to get a dobe, rottie, boxer, or a pit. Can't decide which one yet! But I'll have plenty of time to decide because I'll have to wait until after grad school.

Everyone wanting Filas.. think very thoroughly about that choice.. they change your lifestyle and have needs that ordinary dogs do not. Think carefully. :)

Could you give some examples of how Filas change your lifestyle, Nikki? Just so people wanting these dogs can hear it firsthand from someone who lives with one. :)

I think that is a fantastic idea! Filas are one of the breeds I love, but I know it is definitely not a breed I am prepared to own at the moment.

Great idea! I never knew about this breed till here, and would -someday- love to own one. Probably not for another 10+++ years, but love to learn more :)

just having brought the most recent addition into the house, we are full up on puppies for a long time :)

per contract, if berlin is titled adequately and her health tests are cleared she will be bred, and i would absolutely keep a pup from her. but that's no rush and easily 4-5 years off.

sooner than that, i wouldn't consider another dog until tyler passes on. he's going to be 12 in january and is severely dysplastic and has good and bad days, so who knows. I'd probably lean towards an adult. knowing me, it will probably be a senior doberman since I am a sucker for them. depending on when it was and where ber and rah are in their training, an adult dog at 5-6 years old would be an option too.

as far as other breeds, a mal, rottie, or dutchie are the most likely choices if i got another breed . other breeds i like just don't fit my lifestyle very well, including entirely too much grooming (giant schnauzers), too many dustballs (GSDs - grew up with them, and i can get over that, but right now it would have to wait until my upper level was not carpeted!), too much risk of behavior issues (bull terriers), and just general trainability (saluki, ibizan)

Erm.. *feels put on the spot* :p

Ok, the most obvious... Filas have an aversion to strangers. They just don't like anyone outside of their family and BELIEVE it when people say Filas have to be introduced to those who will be around a lot before their ojeriza settles in. Even when trained and taught who and what is acceptable, a Fila is very much their own dog and they follow their own instincts.

They are intimidating. A friend came over a few weeks ago, she was to stay with Buddy and Banzai while we left for the day (a looong day) and Bella was going with us. Bella was in her face and this made my friend very nervous- but Bella was just checking her out, lol. She stated she was very intimidating- and she is. She DEMANDS and DESERVES respect.

For example, my mom came to visit- it was horrible, bella wouldn't let her do anything without being under Bella's watchful eye at ALL times and even then, when mom did something that was unacceptable, bella's growl and grumble was let loose. Another example, though, my best friend came to visit and Bella was fine with her. You have to learn to trust a Fila's instincts as well.... if they don't wanna do it, don't make them.

ER visits... there has only been a couple, but they have been very stressful on all of us. If in real pain, Bella has to be sedated to even be seen and that's with both hubby and I in the room with her. Normal vet visits go well, even the specialist visits... bella has commands that she's told and she's pretty cooperative, but a change in a vet (like we've just experienced) is detrimental to MONTHS of hard work we went through to get her acquainted her with her vet.

Strangers-- they just don't understand. We do take Bella out with us when we can, like to the pet store or whatever....and she always gets people's jaws dropping and comments like "ohh, she's so pretty" as they advance. You have to be quick on your toes and be clear and strong in your voice when you say NO, you may NOT pet my dog.

Traveling- make sure your plans involve your Fila. There is no boarding place, no vet boarding, that would be safe for your fila or the people that would need to handle her. Every vacation we have planned has to involve at least Bella. Our anniversary plans? They included a night at a hotel in which she could stay, lol. We had to cancel those as we had to move her surgery up, though...

They are very devoted to their family- right down the cat, lol. Do not mess with her family, do not pose a threat.

Ok, that's all I can think of now, of course there is so much more.. if anyone has specific questions maybe they can ask.

Not directly, but Bruda will be in her background... ;)

I'm hoping everything goes as plan. But, there's still a lot of planning and "wait and see" before it's a done deal.

Maybe a doberman or a smooth collie, probably a rescue.
possibly a pittie :)

it depends on my living situation, Milo's behavior, etc.

I really want a border collie but i'm not ready for another high-strung dog just yet.

that is why i want them in so many words. They are perfect for the lifestyle i plan to live. 100's of acres in the middle of nowhere with horses for them to herd and hogs for them to hunt :D

Well as we have 7 dogs, eek that number always surprises me) sp no new ones for while. I would love to keep a pup when I breed Dekka, but not sure if that will be possible. Maybe sell a pup on a breeding contract so I have a possibility of a Dekka grandchild. We had been going to get a long haired whippet for quite a while, and now he have 2.

I will have a toller one day. And my son wants a BC, he has been wanting one for the past 2 years. I have told him if he proves he will work with the dogs, then some day AFTER he is 10 (he is 7 now) We will get him a BC.

When I retire from owning the short mostly white hooligans I would like a pug.
