Have you had any other experience with dogs? If so, which?
Britney Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle, Doberman, Rottweiler, Pittbull.

Not all of the dogs were mine, but I helped a friend out when he made the mistake of buying a Pittbull as a first time dog owner.

That's good. I think you'll find the Fila to be the most challenging.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I dont think a Fila is right for you. Call it a gut instinct.

If you do decide to get a Fila talk alot with Renee Buckshot and Filarotten about the breeders and what raising/training a Fila puppy entails.

That was an interesting edit...

This is one of the few times I'll have to agree with Blue.

I figured someone would want me to tell the story, and I didn't want this thread to go off-topic again.

And could either of you tell me why you don't think a Fila is right for me? What type of dog would you reccomend?

Sorry I cant recomend a dog for you. I have read the posts from Renee, Buckshot and Filarotten for some time now reguarding Filas, there are many hard dogs I would get before a Fila because I read their postings. I dont know you so I could not recomend a dog like the fila Brasileiro to you because of that.

Now I know I went through this whole thread but it is hard to remember what was said about what you were looking for in a dog before...

May I ask why you are looking for such a protective dog?

You don't convey the air of maturity that would be required to own a fila responsibly.

There are a wide variety of mastiffs available that do not require the same kind of special care.

To make a long story short, I live in a bad neighborhood. It's not only important to me that the dog can defend my property but that it can defend its self.

I'm immature now

What's the exact level of maturity do I need to convey to own a Fila? Is there a rule?

I love dogs, I've been raising dogs my whole life, I know how they tick. Does the fact that I'm 18 make me a lesser dog owner than anyone else on this forum? It sure hasn't held me back from anything else thus far.

I'm not going to flame you, I'm just going to prove you wrong :)

This was quite uncalled for. You don't know the OP, and so far I haven't seen anything from them that would prove this statement.

Not being able to distinguish between us saying "we don't feel you're mature enough" and "you're immature" doesn't speak much as an argument against.

Also, the majoraty of the frequent and new posters on this forum are quite a bit younger than you.

Which is much the point.

I didn't see the post before the edit.

If you are ready to take on the extensive, daily socialization that a Fila needs and capable and strong-minded enough to train one and keep it under control, good for you. Since you live in a bad neighborhood, are you also prepared to take care of your dog and protect it from the people that you want it to protect you from? Often times, dogs that defend their territory are poisoned or injured by people who want to get past them, so supervision is important when they are outside.

Definitely talk to Renee if you do decide to get one. She is a gem and extremely helpful :)

If you feel you can handle the dog, then go for it.

But be aware, this is not an easy dog to have and with the dogs you've dealt with, I think just either an Akita or GSD would be just fine. I don't think you'll need a FILA just for a bad neighborhood.

I agree with you on the temperment, but not on the "looks".

What real pit bulls look like...

The Pit on the left is a young female (or at least looks like one) and the Pit on the right is underfed, a Pit Bull should NOT show their ribs like a Greyhound.

The AKC dogs you showed are just better fed and not as conditioned (no treadmill)

Sorry to side track the thread but I had to respond

Those pit bulls are underfed and look as though they have been dehydrated a bit to get the muscle definition. I dunno maybe just me. My APBT's / AmStaffs never looked like that and I wouldnt want them to thats just gross.

Lots of dogs would have the defined look if you starve them. Have you ever seen are really skinny man? They always have a "Six-pack" not because they do sit-ups but because there is zero fat to cover the muscles everyone has. Same with dogs.

Agreed, the thread started as a flame war and after 75 posts has turned into a pitbull debate. Out of all the posts I've read about 5 of them were helpful.

Much thanks to those who provided information about Filas, I'm looking into buying one from Lone Wolf Filas if anyone knows anything about them. I'll post some pictures when the dog comes in the mail, or however dogs are shipped.
I really apologize this topic has gotten so far off track from Filas. What I do hope you will understand is I am in no way wanting to flame you....but, I want to point out a couple of things for you to think about, or clarify.

Btw-dogs don't come in the mail...but cute answer

I read where you are only 18...I will say, when I was 18, I was not ready for a Fila, however this isn't about me, it is about you. You may have been around many more dogs than I was at the age of 18. Rd is young also, and I feel she would be an excellent Fila owner...so I'm not going to base this on age only, but actual owner experience. One question I have is where is the dog going to be kept? A Fila is a velcro dog and I do mean velcro dog...they are not happy without you. You will not be able to throw this dog in the yard and expect it to thrive...It needs to be inside with you. It will want to go everywhere with you...
Do you have a lot of friends that come over? Filas are not known to love everybody, and they don't. It will require a lot of socialization and training.

When it comes to training a Fila, they are very smart, but can be hard headed at times...You have to outsmart you fila...These dogs do not respond to a heavy hand, a soft but firm attitude from you will get the results you want...Don't try to teach your dog to be mean. This will be the worse mistake you could ever make. Fila's are not mean dogs, that are protective and loving dogs.
They don't like to fight other animals, they are quite docile with animals.

Make sure you make weekly visits to your vet for social visits, weigh ins, etc... You don't want to have your dog muzzled every time you have a vet visit.
If you have any questions...and trust me, once you get your puppy you will( these are not your typical canines) we are here to help you. Looking forward to pictures of your new baby.

I was planning on keeping it in the house, and leaving the side door open so it can go outside freely.

I have two friends who are over so much it's probably going to end up viewing them as family. Aside from them I have people over probably about once a month.

That's not NEARLY enough socialization that's needed to maintain a good, confident Fila.
