Hmmmm very interesting information to learn about this breed.

Fila, I have seen your posts and have always thought Brutus is such a good looking dog, and I love his name. Please forgive my lack of knowledge with this breed, but I believe it is a Mastiff and I have heard that they do make wonderful pets and have been known to have great dispositions. But, with any large dog, you have to ensure you (the owner) are in charge at all times.

Great information, thanks!

Aeliz - here's a great link if you'd like to know more about the Fila: http://www.mindspring.com/~anableps/fila.html

The woman who compiled this website is one of the more intelligent, intuitive and knowledgeable today. I've had the great privilege of meeting her and spending time with her and meeting one of her female Filas. She has been and continues to be a great source of information to me, and she gave me many valuable insights when I was starting out with my Filas.

Thank you! Brutie is very special...and yes they do need a very experienced owner, they are not for the weak of heart...

And Makenzie, your snide comments about spelling, grammar and post context are not impressing anyone. You'd get a far better reception by just sticking to the issue at hand.
BLUE was the one that started the "I am going to pick at your spelling for no reason" issue. NOT mak.

Are they a reconized breed yet in Canada or the US?
Jenn, they've been a differentiated breed - as far as anyone can dig back - since around the 16th century. Rare breed associations recognize the breed, and as for AKC, CKC or any of the other KCs, most of the dyed-in-the-wool Fila people don't recognize THEM :D

Acceptance into the AKC has been the death knell for far too many great breeds . . . I can only shudder to think of what is going to happen to the Neo now that it's accepted and smeared all over Westminster and every fool who thinks they look "ooooooo so cute" just HAS to have one . . .

Oh Renee, I see it in the Neo already. Some of the dogs in the ring are so unsound that they can barely lumber around the ring, much less be an efficient guardian. It's sad, but KC recognition tends to lead to trouble for most working breeds. People just cannot bring themselves to breed for the total package when shows are in the question, I suppose. It is so upsetting to look at my breed and see how many conformation champions are being bred without so much as a CD after their name.

It is getting pretty annoying, and I think other members are getting tired of those kinds of arguments. Why bring up something that has nothing to do with the topic? I am beginning to think that blue just cant help himself.

Thats all :D

Look what it has done to the pit bull! They dont even resemble a real pit. They look like fat, mastiff mixes. So sad.

I want as few people to own Filas as possible! I trust the good homes of the fila owners on this forum, but I dont want to see the breed get watered down. I dont want to see a big demand for these dogs which would create loose breeding practices. That would in turn lead to bad owners owning them and BSL soon to follow. Mine is pretty young and he certainly doesnt welcome strangers but then again I dont either. He hasnt bitten anyone, but he has in no uncertain terms let some folks know where the line in the sand is. To my surprize there seems to still be some instincts left in the human race as no one has tried to challenge him. He plays with the folks who come over after I have acknowledged their presence. He nerfs down his play on kids, elderly and women. He "holds" , there is pictures on this forum of that. When I play with him we get pretty rough and he loves to get me cornered. Once i am in a corner he tries to keep me there. If I try to get out he growls then when I return to the corner he stops growling.

As far as being like a crocodile, I cant say as I agree with that. I personally think Filas are great dogs and I doubt I will ever be without one. I wouldnt let the statements made by people who have no personal experience with them sway you one way or the other.

As far as the meter reader... I have never owned any dog that would allow the meter reader in my yard if I was not home.
Both Athena and Sal love the Meter guys, the Mail Man, the UPS guys ...... you get the idea...They love everyone. Sal would invite the whole city over to the house while I was gone if he could dial the phone.

On the topic of AKC and the affect on breeds: In my opinion the Pit Bull has actually benefited. In my opinion the strict standard of the Amstaff has help the look and the temperment of the Pit Bull has also benefited. Most people believe that Amstaffs as a whole have a more stable temperment especially with other animals.

I do realize that many other breeds have not fair so well via the AKC.

Amstaffer, this isn't meant to hijack the thread or start a debate, but do you support the "breeding down" of the Pit Bull/Amstaff's instincts? I honestly feel that milder dogs, bigger heads and more muscle is all that's been achieved since the APBT/AST got kennel club recognition. There are exceptions and truly wonderful versatile dogs, but for the most part I think the showline Pit has lost most of its terrier spirit.
