Amstaffer, this isn't meant to hijack the thread or start a debate, but do you support the "breeding down" of the Pit Bull/Amstaff's instincts? I honestly feel that milder dogs, bigger heads and more muscle is all that's been achieved since the APBT/AST got kennel club recognition. There are exceptions and truly wonderful versatile dogs, but for the most part I think the showline Pit has lost most of its terrier spirit.
"Breeding Down" or Breeding up? Well I personally don't think breeding for gameness or animal aggression has any point today. Dog Fighting is illegal as is all the animal fighting "Sports". It is time for the Pit Bull to become more civilized in my opinion.

Amstaffs are not bred to have huge unbalanced heads. There are wacked breeders who breed Pits to have Super-Big heads but that is not to AKC standards.

Terrier Spirit is one thing but animal aggession simply is no longer needed.

I honestly feel that if the Breed isn't bred up (or down as you call it) I think more and more BSL will happen.

I take great pride in the fact that my dogs like other animals and I would like to see the breed become more like my dogs (because my dogs are perfect :p ;) )

I know I'm " different " because of age, but I really don't like ANY agreesion play with young dogs.....if you want a " killer" fine ,after the age of one, turn it into the mafia ! My dogs have always been part of the family.

I agree with you on the temperment, but not on the "looks".

What real pit bulls look like...

That looks like some kind of abstract artwork...

I prefer the AKC varient...
Pits are supposed to be athletic, not heavy boned. I prefer the original pit. :)

The one on the right looks pretty emaciated to me.
You can see greyhounds ribs, and they are perfectly healthy.

The "real" pits that I posted have very defined muscles.

This is a good looking pit bull to me:

That pit doesnt look too bad, but he still looks like mastiff blood has been mixed in.

Another pic of a real pit bull...

I thought this thread was about Filas? not about what pit bulls looked like?

Here is a pic of a Fila to maybe help people get back on track.

I would love to be of help but unfortunately I dont know much about the breed, and I am not learning much from this thread either.

You havent learned much?

Fila owners posted what the proper temperment for a fila is, what its like to own one, etc...

I learned very little for 8 pages and 75 posts. There was so much crap in there I can hardly remember which posts came from knowledgable fila owners or people who just want to comment.

Agreed, the thread started as a flame war and after 75 posts has turned into a pitbull debate. Out of all the posts I've read about 5 of them were helpful.

Much thanks to those who provided information about Filas, I'm looking into buying one from Lone Wolf Filas if anyone knows anything about them. I'll post some pictures when the dog comes in the mail, or however dogs are shipped.

I'd talk to Renee about who to go to when it comes to breeders, she knows the best.

And is this just a breed you're wondering about getting, or is it set in stone you will be getting it?

When I started this thread it was a breed I was wondering about. Now after doing some research and hearing what the people on this forum have to say it's prettymuch set in stone. I've yet to talk to any Fila owners who are unhappy with their dog.

They really are a good, loyal breed. But socialization and training is KEY to owning a properly behaved dog. Socialization especially, with a Fila.

Have you had any other experience with dogs? If so, which?
