BigDog is correct. You really do have to take them out into the world - leashed, of course :) Socializing does more than just teach them the differences between normal behaviour and threatening behaviours, or even how to be a well-mannered dog - it builds your dog's confidence. A confident dog is a stable dog, and that's what we're after. When you get a dog like a Fila - or any dog for that matter - that doesn't have a good level of self-confidence you've got trouble waiting to happen.

No no, you misunderstood. I'm talking about when it's grown up. As a puppy I'm going to take it to the beach with me every chance I get.

lol I don't think that was a misunderstanding since that info wasn't shared :p

You'll have to introduce your fila to people or all ages and sizes and other dogs/animals... lot's of work

Take it to pet smart also(when it has had all of it's shots)...some people may disagree with me, but I think it has been a good learning experience for Brutus and myself. But take my advice, do it on less busy day than the weekend. The weekend is very busy and does put a Fila under a lot of stress as everyone wants to crowd around and pet them( I had this happen).. you have to watch every move the dog makes and the people. The people are nuts.
Just watch people in the cookie aisle, especially redhead women...these dogs love them...and cookies.

You should be able to continue your walks on the beach with your Fila after it's grown - if you've done your job well!

And Fila's right . . . they seem to have an obsession for redheads :D These are truly weird dogs - for lots of reasons ;)

The Pit on the left is a young female (or at least looks like one) and the Pit on the right is underfed, a Pit Bull should NOT show their ribs like a Greyhound.

The AKC dogs you showed are just better fed and not as conditioned (no treadmill)

Sorry to side track the thread but I had to respond
Both of those pits are under 50 pounds. And the pit on the left is a champion fighter. She is no puppy. They are way more small boned than the akc version. The pit on the right is not underfed, he is conditioned.

Take a look at the pics in this site. It will show you the difference... http://www.workingpitbull.com/amstaffpit2.html

I had to respond to your respond. :)

Lots of dogs would have the defined look if you starve them. Have you ever seen are really skinny man? They always have a "Six-pack" not because they do sit-ups but because there is zero fat to cover the muscles everyone has. Same with dogs.
If that dog was really starved, he wouldnt have any muscle mass. The muscle would be used up for fuel.

Why are you showing us pictures of FIGHTING dogs? They are over muscled and over toned for the fight ring. Thats stupid.

Because I am showing what a real pit bull looks like, and it just happens that game bred pits are pure, not mastiff mixes like most of them are. Take a look at the web site that I listed, it shows the difference.

Over muscled? I dont know what you mean by that.

It's like a body builder. They look gross.
That is what happends when you are conditioned, lol. Pure pit bulls are very strong, and they build muscle easily. I personaly think that fat is more gross than muscle, but thats just me. :)

A nicly tonned dog isnt fat. That dog is going overboard. Not to mention its a fighting dog so I have officially lost all respect for posts made in that dog's defence. Just my personal opinion

Any game bred pit, or real pit can look like that. Whether he was used for fighting or not. It doesnt matter what the dog was used for. I can post pics of real pits that were never used for fighting.

A pure pit that was never used for fighting...

You can definately tell that the akc has destroyed its looks. Compare him to an am staff. Pits are supposed to be athletic, not heavy boned.

Just my own opinion, by the way.

You are talking like it is a fact when it is YOUR opinion.

Anyone who breeds for gameness is doing a disservice to all Pit Bulls and their brother breeds, that is my opinion. What the heck do Pit Bulls need gameness for?

Tupac - if you haven't noticed ... we tend to get sidetracked easily here. Don't get too frustrated... it happens in the majority of the threads. :)

Well, it seems like I forgot to put "in my opinion" on some posts. My bad...

I dont agree with "gameness" in pit bulls. I am just talking about the looks, not temperament.
