I was looking at the Fila Brasileiro, it seems like a GREAT dog to have. I was just wondering about this "ojeriza" thing.

I wanted to know, with proper obediance training and socialization is this dog still going to kill anything that comes into my yard? From what I've gathered they will generally attack any and everything that comes near it when the owner is not home. But when the cable guy fails to notice the "Beware of dog" sign is the dog going to give him some sort of warning or straightup charge him and kill him?

Also, if I were to have a friend over will the dog be OK with him as long as I'm around or is it going to attack my friends regaurdless of what I do?

I take it it's a given that I can't take it to obediance classes with other dogs or to the vet without some sort of muzzle?

The brazilian molosser is about as good a critter to have hanging around your house as a crocadile. They were bred to be guardians, hunters and killers. They're stubborn in their ways, breeding makes them dangeruosly protective, and you really have little chance of making a good pet out of one.

Their one shining trait is their unfathomable loyalty to their owner, and tolerence of his family.

My suggestion is that, unless you're a hermit on a mountain that requires a helicopter and a conoe to reach, don't get one. You'll ultimately regret it...likely dearly. I've yet to experience an owner "happy" in the long run.

Or you could listen to the handful of Fila owners we have on this board instead of someone with misinformation.

The general consensus seems to be that once the dog hits maturity and starts displaying ojeriza, then no, the meter reader is not safe alone. As far as other animals go, they are the best out of the mastiff types for sociability. It does take a certain type of owner to handle a Fila. Talk to Renee, Filarotten and Buckshot if you really want to know what a Fila should be like.

This contradicts my post in what way?

~And to clarify...I don't think a "good pet" is one that the meter reader has to be afraid of.

~~And please forgive me if I've misinterpretted your initial statement somehow.

Im assuming, a stretch I know, that you have actual personal 1 on 1 experience with Filas in your home.

If not, it is "canoe" not "conoe".

They've been owned by friends and reletives and many acquaintances...also in several shelters and rescues thanks to the variety of owners that give Pitt Bulls bad names.

And, since you'd like to be a smart-ass, "I'm" has an apostrophe.

Ignore Makenzie. Renee or FilaRotten will respond in good time with actual advice and experience with Filas.

So your definition of a "good pet" is one that joyfully welcomes any and all into it's home territory? Sorry, not everyone wants a Golden Retriever.

It contradicts your post as far as Filas will not eat every animal it encounters. If properly socialized, Filas will do fine at the vets office and obedience class, but as with any dog it's best to start them early so as to build a good solid foundation of "public manners".

I'll wait for the Fila owners on the board to have a look at this thread.

They're tnedency is to do just that if their owner isn't present...I'm sure there are exceptions, but not many. People who don't want "golden retrievers"...as you say...don't typically want "pets". The dog was created as a tool and, as with any animal with such strong breeding influence, it will be excessively difficult to break them of this.

As said, I'm sure there's exceptions out there...ones that make good "pets"...I've simply yet to experience one.

iShotTupac, what about the Fila drew you to them? What about them makes you want one?
I love how loyal they are to their family and that they will not let strangers into my house when I'm not around. Out of all of the dogs I have looked at, this one seems asthough it would be the one most likely to get along with the other animals in my house.

Lay down with that handle? Do you not like my handle? I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't think there would be any Tupac fans on a dog forum. It's supposted to be funny though, don't take it to seriously.

Now could we please stop flaming eachother and get back to talking about dogs :)

If you fully understand and can accept a dog that will not be accepting of strangers much less be trusted alone with them...essentially he can't be trusted with anyone without your presence...and can fully handle the responsibillity of owning one, then go for it. Owning one of these animals is no small thing.

My biggest piece of advice, if you choose to go through with picking one up, is that you take advantage of every possible resource and grasp a full understanding of the dog's origins, why they were created, and how they should be trained...EVERY resource. A full understanding of the dog will be the best thing you can do for him.

From the little I have read about them the are amazing dogs. Feircly loyal and protective. If thats what you want in a dog. With them come certain responsibilities that most breeds dont have. No your meeter man will NOT be welcome in your yard with your adult Fila. You have to be a responsible owner and make adjustments for this.

The Fila owners can point you in a good direction

I fail to see how...or how either of you have contradicted me (or vice versa) in this matter.

and some of these abbreviations you guys use need to be backed off a notch..."BSL" stands for 5 different legitimate organizations and activities and such...people who aren't familiar with the concept of breed specific legislation would be clueless.
