I noticed today that Dash has an absolutely insane tolerance for pain/discomfort. In the past week she's slammed into a cactus, slapped her muzzle against a huge piece of concrete, been dog-piled by both Eve and Dakota, and has *never* so much as whined. When I trim her nails, if I cut the quick I can't tell until I see blood - she never flinches or pulls away. Last week I was standing on her tail and she was just sitting there, looking at me like "get OFF me you idiot!". She's a live wire but it's like her nerves are faulty! lol. Nothing seems to hurt her.

Eve is more sensitive. She'll yip if I cut her quick, she moans and groans if she has a little ache, she screams if I accidentally step on her. She also learns how to avoid painful things and makes an effort to keep herself safe, whereas Dash will make the same mistake over and over.

Dakota is weird. He never whines or cries, but he growls and snarls. If something really hurts him, he'll roar like a lion. I worry about him being treated by a vet if he ever has a really severe injury, because I think he'd bite a stranger if he thought they were hurting him.

How does your dog react to pain?

If you step on Shadow's foot she will yelp. If she gets hurt she doesn't really complain unless you don't cuddle her or rub the spot that she hurt. Ususally, if I step on her or do something to accidentally harm her she will give me a " what did I do mom" look , and then I'll feel bad and say sorry to her . Her eyes are what shows if she is in pain or happy or in comfort. Lol

More than me, certainly. He doesn't whine or complain if I accidentally get his quick but he does pull his paw away.

Um.. I've whacked him in the face with my booted feet more than once when I'm climbing over things and he still stands where I can't see him when he knows I'm clumsy, so I'm beginning to wonder if he enjoys getting whacked. He's run full speed into things and hasn't seemed to be bothered by it.

He does ast like I'm killing him when I clean his ears, though.

Oh man! My dog is a crybaby. He'll be chewing on his own arm, then bite himself too hard and cry about it. On the plus side, he has fantastic bite inhibition now.

It's weird though, once he sat on a prickly pear and got a whole bunch of spines in his bottom but he didn't even notice.

Virgo doesn't notice much in the way of pain at all. I can't tell if she's hurt until I see her limping or something, because she doesn't even really favor herself. If I step on her, she'll jerk away, but that's it.

Sawyer's more stoic about it than some, but he lets me know if I've quicked him by yanking away and giving a small yip.

My new border Collie pup CANT stand pain..He is a baby!!..When I took him in for his shots, he whinnied and cried, if I step on his tail he cries, if my moms dog Pepper ( who's prolly the same size of him now ) barks at him when hes eating a bone, he will run and whine like he got bit or something.

Trixie is pretty good though, shes just a baby for loud noises ( she will run and hide )

luce never seemed to be in all that much pain even following knee surgery. she caught her foot in a blanket a few days post-op and yiped, but that was it. she was walking on it the day after i brought her home. very undramatic.

but ice melt salt on her feet in winter? she acts like she's dying.

harv's pretty non-reactive, too.

mushroom's much more sensitive and defensive, but even he is not too bad to deal with. he's really touchy about his feet, though.

All four of my dogs scream like crazy if I accidentally hit the quick when clipping toenails. But yet, they run around and trample over each other and run into walls, etc... and never even whimper. I think they just try to make me feel bad.

Borzoi are drama queens when it comes to little things like nail clipping or a stubbed toe. But... if they are truly ill or injured they are very stoic about it and don't let you know. They grump and groan but usually it's due to annoyance rather than pain

Milo...well, he'll run full force into a brick wall, fall from heights, get stepped on, etc. and not make a sound. but god help anyone in the room when he gets a shot or his quick cut. he screams like a damned baby.

What pain tolerance? They don't know what pain is. Especially Miley. She's out there wrestling with dogs 7x larger than she is, getting squished and she still goes in for more! She's a tough cookie!

Malakai and Chloe are big babies..step on their toe and they will whine and cry.

Freckles on the other hand is a tank.. if she gets hurt I have to MAKE her settle down. A couple days ago she was out back romping around and somehow gashed her paw pad open, I didn't notice anything untill I looked down and saw several bloody paw prints around the room, it was a pretty nasty cut too.. but oh no she would much rather continue to play then let me bandage up a bloddy paw

Lizzie's Like Eve. She whines/barks if someone steps on her tail, squirms and lets you know if you're getting to close to the quick.

Viv, I don't have my camera right now but I'll get pics of Dash, Dakota and Eve in a week or so.

Buddy is all the way in Washington, I can't get pics of him. :( I miss him sooo much though and need to bug his mom and dad for pictures of him.

Put it this way, Kharma wasn't even reactive with a bullet shattered in her foot. She wasn't even limping when she came in. And when she was three months old she got into the electric cattle fence . . . the one that arcs about six inches out. And she turned around and bit it - twice.

Bimmer's bad to "man up" on me when he's hurt. Except when he got into the electric fence. Then he hollered once and bolted like lightning. If something does hurt him, he'll turn his head and look away while I examine it. The most he'll do is a quiet whimper, then he acts embarrassed. What a guy.

Della will yelp if you step on her or if she thinks you're going to step on her lol. She will yelp if you hold her ear gently until she realizes it doesn't hurt and then she stops. She yelps when she gets poked and prodded by the vet and she also has a sensitive spot on her shoulder. She's a complete klutz and she's always bumping into something. Silly puppy.

Whisper runs into, walls, cars, doors, fridges, and her crate door, and never whelps, or anything. If I accidently step on her tail, she nips at you, and is like, what did you do that for? look.

Hershey, If I stepped on him, he would be asking, why did I deserve that? Or why did you do that? And if the kids are pulling on him, he keeps saying, why are you putting me through this? Of course we keep an eye on everyone. ;) So they don't pull on him, normally they don't. Labs are pretty pain tolerant, mine are at least. :)

I don't really know to be honest.

She's never been in a situation where she has been in pain.

When she was spayed she was VERY miserable, but I think it was more the anesthetic than the wound.
