(If you're on the other board you'll probably pick out where this comes from lol)

I hate when people use their dog's breed as an excuse for not training it or using totally asinine training methods (like refusing to reward the dog for a recall because you're 'bribing' the dog).

'You don't understand! I have a border collie and they are the smartest dogs in the world. Whatever you do with your less than intelligent dog doesn't work because my dog is so smart.' Or something along those lines as to why they can't use basic reward training to teach a dog not to bolt and to recall on cue.

Apparently I don't understand because I have a toy dog and toy dogs work differently than other dogs. Never mind the fact that motivating a dog with a reward that works for them is universal to all dogs. And you all know my dog is exceedingly dumb and not athletic and just lays around all day. I could just catch her myself if she bolted out the door because she's obviously so slow and dumb.

The dog runs away because it's a border collie and it's smart. My dogs behave because they're toy dogs and dumb. Training a border collie doesn't work because they're smart. I think I'm going to scream. Unfortunately this is not the first person I've heard say something along these lines.

Thank you for letting me rant. :lol-sign:

Agree that makes me angry too!

And to some people also all toys dogs bite and have bad humor, and they think they don't need toys to play, as they also think we only have them to get them dressed in cute clothes and carry them like human babies.

I know what thread you are talking about.

This person just wants a quick easy fix, and isn't getting what they want.

You don't need to train little dogs, they cant walk further then 3 blocks, love that line. what a tool. Some one never gave my frinds 3 chis tha memo, as they regulaly hikes 5-10kms with us.

Honestly have a BC IMO should make it just that much easier to train, then say my solomonster. who BTW has a solid recall in the woods (although Im aware he is young and this could change)

I resent when anyone talks about training being easy or harder based on breed. Each dog is different. Just because a person has a border collie doesn't mean it's smart and just because a person owns a toy breed doesn't mean they're stupid. GAH!

And owning a border collie, and loving the breed, I hate when people brag up how smart they are and use their intelligence as an excuse. Grrrr. But yeah, I get what you're saying.

Though I saw no such thread... then again, maybe this isn't the forum Tankstar, Laur, and I are all on.

Oh training is easier or harder over all, depending on the breed. Sport is far far easier to train than the JRTs, simply as working can be its own reward. (though you would have to beat him to make him run away... he wants to work so bad!!) Though there are challenges to training an easily trained dog... they learn things you didn't intend to teach quite well too :D

But that is silly... someone PM where this is so I can go goggle at the silly?

I get it, its okay if my BC is crazy, barky, reactive and nipping. Its a BC! Its what they do, they're crazy dogs.
And she should just do as she's told because she's a BC and they are super obediant, I don't even know why I bother training her, arn't they born trained?

HAhaha... I was going to say, if your Border Collie is running away from you, you're doing something wrong! BCs should be biddable and responsive and velcro. In my opinion. ;) He's probably running off to find an owner who will actually train him instead of supressing/punishing him. Border Collies of all dogs should NOT ever be trained with aversives. They are hypersensitive.

I hate it when people say that their hounds/huskies/bully breeds are just impossible to train. Just because a dog is naturally impulsive or independent doesn't mean their behaviors cannot be modified and they can't be super obedient dogs. It's sad, too, because those dogs miss out on all of the amazing mental exercise and owner bonding that training gives them... and they are much less safe because their owners just give up on them before even trying. People say Fozzie "CANNOT be part Husky!" because he competes in Obedience and Rallyo and beats the snot out of Border Collies. Um... he probably is part Husky, and probably mixed with something houndy as he is a crazy tracker and he used to have his nose glued to ground at all times. He's also extremely intelligent and has lots of common sense, something that I have grown to love about independent dogs.

I agree! People are always surprised that I work with Lucy at all. Because since she's a small dog/a chihuahua/"so little!" it doesn't matter what she does, because whatever it is she would do if she were untrained, it wouldn't be much of a problem because of her size. Gah. How about this- she's small enough for a hawk to pick up. So I think it's a pretty good thing I trained her a recall and not to run out the door.
And then there a people who are shocked that she listens to me because little dogs are dumb/impossible to potty train and impossible to train at all.

If your BC is running away from you, I can't imagine WTF you are doing to that poor dog!

I love working with "untrainable" dogs. The wild ones are often the most easy to motivate and the most fun to train!

i get annoyed when people imply that having a border collie is somehow cheating, and that their dogs are being unruly/uncooperative/etc because they're not border collies.

1. steve has not been at all easy for me to train
2. luce = so not a border collie
3. if you stopped jerking on your dog and tried figuring out what motivates her and working with her, you might have more success

I find that BC's are actually really easy to train because they WANT to train.

People like that really irritate me!!!
