First, here is the article that prompted this thread. lol.

this feels like a Vonnegut plotline: population boom equals food shortage. Solution? Synthesize food from human waste matter. Absurd yes, but Japanese scientists have actually discovered a way to create edible steaks from human feces.

Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, has developed steaks based on proteins from human excrement. Tokyo Sewage approached the scientist because of an overabundance of sewage mud. They asked him to explore the possible uses of the sewage and Ikeda found that the mud contained a great deal of protein because of all the bacteria.

The researchers then extracted those proteins, combined them with a reaction enhancer and put it in an exploder which created the artificial steak. The “meat†is 63% proteins, 25% carbohydrates, 3% lipids and 9% minerals. The researchers color the poop meat red with food coloring and enhance the flavor with soy protein. Initial tests have people saying it even tastes like beef.

Inhabitat notes that “the meatpacking industry causes 18 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions, mostly due to the release of methane from animals.†Livestock also consume huge amounts of resources and space in efforts to feed ourselves as well as the controversy over cruelty to animals. Ikeda’s recycled poop burger would reduce waste and emissions, not to mention obliterating Dante’s circle for gluttons.

The scientists hope to price it the same as actual meat, but at the moment the excrement steaks are ten to twenty times the price they should be thanks to the cost of research. Professor Ikeda understands the psychological barriers that need to be surmounted knowing that your food is made from human feces. They hope that once the research is complete, people will be able to overlook that ugly detail in favor of perks like environmental responsibility, cost and the fact that the meat will have fewer calories.

They can eat it.

I will stick with the muscle of deceased cattle TYVM.

(do they mean gut bacteria that came out in the feces or do they mean bacteria that grew in the feces afterwards? If the "meat" requires extracting and using the post-excretion bacteria, wouldn't it be better just to grow the bacteria in vats and harvest it? Because there will still be "waste" eg the non-bacteria stuff and that still needs to be decomposed (by bacteria) so wouldn't it be counter productive to extract the bacteria from the waste?)

ETA LOL at the second last poll option, I almost picked it

Grooooooss.

Clever, Japan, but no thanks. You know, it'd lessen the blow if it wasnt made from HUMAN feces.

Pretty sure that I won't ever think of Chicken Lo Mein the same again just because it was referenced in this thread. LOL
:rofl1: :rofl1:

I wonder if they're going to have different varieties... like organic/grass fed humans. LOL and the cheap versions can be from the humans who eat junk foods like McDonalds every day :yikes:

I don't see the big deal. Technically if you eat veggies grown in manure enriched soil you are eating veggies made from poop.

And you aren't really making steaks from poop, but steaks from proteins taken from bacteria. Who cares where the protein comes from, as long as its the same proteins...

Me.. Cause its not actually made from poop, even less so than veggies grown in soil with natural fertilizers..

As long as it tasted like steak, and had the same nutrition as steak... why should I care?

I'm with Dekka. I really wouldn't care. The title of the article it just to sensationalize the story. I really don't consider that "steak made out of poo" or anything.

I am honestly not sure... Don't think I could do it. To me, there is a difference in grass-fed cow manure and human feces.

I have heard that they found a way to make drinking water out of sewage and want to implement that because Lake Mead is getting way too low. I think it is smart.

Would you drink that?

I feel the same way about this as I do drinking filtered pee water.

Sure, once it's filtered it's perfectly fine and healthy to drink... but I'd definitely have a mental allergy when it comes to eating/drinking bodily waste :yikes:

In many places treated human waste is spread commercially on fields. Can't say I personally care where the nutrients came from for the plants I eat, as long as its healthy.
