Did you have a 'dream dog' or am I just weird? And did you ever get one? Will you ever get one?

I always wanted a rough collie. I begged and begged for a collie but my parents didn't want one. I think that's how we ended up with three shelties- a nice compromise between my mom wanting small dogs and me wanting a collie. I don't think I'll ever get a collie, but they're beautiful dogs. I still really really like them.

I really really wanted an English Cocker. I still think they are nice, but doubt I would ever get one.

No, I was more into horses than dogs as a child. I mean, I loved all pets and we had dogs, but my family did not care for them properly and they were outside dogs. So I just didn't see them the same way until I got my own dog when I was older and really wanted to do the right things.

I always wanted a newfoundland. However I've moved on to the more.. sharper tempermented mastiffs now. Although, a newfie would still be very nice. My true dream dog outside of the mastiff group is the Ibizan Hound, of course.

I grew up with Collies and have always loved them as my first breed, but I've always had a desire to one day have a Bull Terrier. They are just the neatest clown dogs!!

Well, we had a rough collie when I was a kid... and he died when I was six. So another one. =>
My sister got a sheltie when she moved out at 19 because she was in an apartment, and now I don't think I'll ever go back to collies. The sheltie personality suits me a lot better. Doesn't stop me from drooling over collies, of course!

When I first got interested in dogs I wanted a dachshund (sp?) or a bull terrier.

I still love both breeds but neither are an ideal dog for me, if I ever had the chance to own one in the right situation I wouldn't turn it down except there are othes breeds I think I'm better suited to

Did you have a 'dream dog'?
Yes, a Golden Retriever! Never met one I didn't adore and it was my dream breed.

We never got one when I was a kid because:
a.) Dad preferred the more stoic German breeds, GSDs and Schnauzers
b.) Mom thought ALL Goldens jump up ... and Mom is very short. She also very much preferred non-shedders, and had to be talked into the GSDs and the the couple shedding mixed breeds we had.

And did you ever get one?
Yes! Cheyenne ... my Golden Retriever.

I had lived back East, and the more I learned about Goldens, the more I wanted an Okeechobee Golden and saved up for a puppy. Cheyenne was that Golden, a direct descendant of Wochica's Okeechobee Jake. She was my dream dog ... I know I'm biased but she WAS the perfect dog. A few years ago my sister remarked "You're the only person I know who NEVER complains about their dog!" My reply: "I honestly have nothing to complain about!"

Cheyenne lived to make me happy and just never did anything naughty. Did she jump up? Yep ...but only when invited because that's how I trained her. She never jumped up on my Mom, who incidently adored Cheyenne. Cheyenne also changed Dad's mind ... although a typically friendly Golden, she had was no blubbery pushover. She was very nuturing but had a quiet confidence. She moved all the way across the country with me ... along with "her" cats.

Cheyenne is ATRB as of Father's Day of this year. It's strange and difficult to think you may have already had the best dog of your life. As much as it (still) hurts to not have her ... I would do it all over again. She was my "heart dog" for a little over 15 years.
Will you ever get one?
Another Golden? Definitely!!
Currently Golden-less .... but then Cheyenne is an extremely tough act to follow. But I love Goldens too much and someday will have another ... just not right now.

I was just as a dog fanatic as a young child as I am now.. lol. I was SO weird. Anyway, I was always obsessing over a GSD. However, my parents said no. They told me what kind of traits would be OK and I went from that and ended up with a Smooth Collie. He turned out to be a nightmare lol, and I don't think I'll ever end up with a Smooth Collie again(not because he was difficult, just because I have 'other' favorites now lol).

A GSD.. I'd love to have one of these days. I'd probably rescue despite the utter temptation considering I have a wonderful GSD breeder friend.. I'm very focused on our Cardi/Newfie obsession at the moment though. Our next dogs are already planned, I don't think I could get away with rescuing anytime soon :D

Must have been the Lassie years !!!
LOL.. yup.. Me too... I remember a contest that they were giving a free collie pup to the one that wrote the best essay on " why they wanted a collie.." ( found out years later my mother never mailed the letter I wrote.. lol. ) The other breed I loved was the Borzoi. ( at least that dream was made..)

not really. we had a newfoundland when i was little, and then a cocker spaniel. i was happy as could be with the cocker. he was a good dog. i was more interested in cats, and i did have my own cat (who i wasn't allowed to take with me when i moved out. hmph!)

it wasn't until i was in college that i really started to get interested in dogs, and got obsessed with the pit bulls. and we all know how that turned out ;)

Border Collie...went with Aussies instead. Probably will have a BC at some point, but I love the Aussies

Also, a Rottie. I'm still on track to get one of those.

I had wanted a an Australian Shepherd was I was younger. My Mom was going to get me one but we got Niche a white GSD that was very badly abused. I loved her so much we had her until she was about 14yrs old she got cancer RIP dear girl. I have always had rescue dogs. I would love to have another Dobie but I would like to have a pure Toller too. I have had alsorts of mixes plus APBT, mals, chows, labs, schaunzers, poodles, a basset. I can't remeber all the dogs we have taken in and re-homed once they were healthy again. Plus I did grooming for about 12yr too. Not too many dogs I don't care for.

I wanted a dog...it didn't matter what kind I just wanted to share my life with a dog. I cried every day, after school for a dog from first grade up till third. My parents were either going to get me a dog or take me to a shrink and finally gave into a dog, a great shelter dog that I soooo enjoyed and loved!
