I've a birthday party to go to, and it is at 2 p.m. so Johnnie will be in her crate for 3 hrs or more? Do I take her on a 45 min walk then take her in the back yard and play ball with her?

What do you do?

Personally I'm a fan of doing a good half hour of ball (or whatever) BEFORE walking them. Then after the walk they're ready for an ice cream and a looooooooooooong nap ;)

If your dog likes to chase and grab stuff, try a flirt pole. Lots of fun!

you can buy them here but i just made one myself. i took a piece of pvc pipe cut to a manageable length, ran some rope through it and knotted it at the bottom, and then tied a piece of fabric to the end (you can tie whatever you'd like to it). some people use cheap lunge whips used for horse training and tie a lure to the end.

When I crated what I use to do is either good long walk or play with balls in the yard. Let the dog cool off, drink water and calm down- then crate for a nap..

I engage my dogs in a hard course of waking up off the couch. To help stimulate blood flow they are then forced to walk 20 feet to the dog room. I ignore the pleas for mercy and the occasional escape back to the couch. Once there, we stretch and start the complicated mind engaging task of entering their crates. They then start a serious workout of laying down and falling back asleep.

In the end it looks something like this. A truly worn out dog.

I have never put any dog in a crate. But i have run, walked, retrieved, chased bubbles, laser pointers, and games like hide and seek before i would have to be gone for an extended period of time. IF i felt it was going to be more then 4 hours i take them to the sitter.

Ollie is the first I ever crated !! He trashed his 1st adopted people's house and I couldn't take chances !! I'd say that he's only been caged about a dozen times in his almost 2 years here . Better to be safe than sorry since he's cool with it !

LOL Icyhound!

I work with Middie for 15 minutes on the flirt pole now that I have it. When I have to give it back to Cristy next week - until I make my own - we'll be back to playing ball or a training session.

To tire the boys out... a lot of running, fetching, frisbee, tugging, and hose-chasing, followed by 15-20 minutes of Obedience work, does the trick. : ) It's a good idea to warm your dog up before exercise, and cool them down afterwards, either with stretching, a short walk, and/or a massage.

And make sure you stuff and freeze a Kong to leave in her crate! That will take up to an hour of work, and should calm her down.

Depends on how much time I have and how hot it is outside. If I'm going to be crating them usually its because it is ungodly hot outside which I dont excercise my guys in anyways. However if I know they will be crated throughout the day i plan for a good excercise session earlier on when it is much cooler. Lately jogging them with the bike is our thing.

My dogs must be an exception to the rule as when they are out of the crate (besides the half hour or so they play together) they just lay around--so I just tell them to go away and they go to their crates and continue to lay around.

I don't bother doing anything special with Voodoo. He is so incredibly lazy when indoors. It usually involves:

-Me calling Voodoo off the couch
-The Chaos Demon slowly oozing off the couch, with a great show of stretching and yawning.
-Sleepy, semi-stumbling walk to the crate.
-Collapsing on his blankie, acting as if he just ran 10 miles to get there.

Exercise before crating, I don't. I put them out in the yard for a few minutes to when ever, then let them in, say crate and they race each other to their crates.
Being in their crates is no big deal around here, whether it be for a few minutes to 8 hrs.

Having dogsat for 9 sighthounds (5 salukis, 2 whippets,1 grey and 1 iggy) before, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. The salukis were horrible about getting off the couch and making it to their crates.

I don't do much at. They have a routine now. I used to go to the park, or walk them before I left for work, but they quickly started anticipating that, and were very annoying on days I didn't fell well and wanted to sleep in, or days I didn't feel like doing that. Mine are very lazy during the day, and active at night.
