I threaten Briggs in a joking voice with hugs and kisses. He thinks I'm hilarious and runs at me mouth open to lick my face.

Uhh, thanks Briggs. I'm guessing the dog taught him how to give kisses.

LOL Ive told Bev Im going to beat her skinny little butt when I caught her and got horrified looks as she was giggling about it running away from me as I chased her and grabbed her and patted her butt while hugging her and kissing her. Its a game we play and always have.

I love how people enjoy being judgmental and pissy on an internet forum.

Everyone's different. All families are different.

To be fair, some of the fondest memories I have of my childhood are of my mother teasing me with silly threats. :/

Its not verbal abuse if those involved know its all in fun.

I don't think it's verbal abuse? I think it's all about the context. My friend does it with her son all the time. She says she's going to spank his chubby butt and the kid smiles and laughs and they have a little game out of it.

I do that with Briggs. OH BRIGGS I SWEAR.... YOU DO THAT AGAIN IM GONNA GET YOU AND GIVE YOU KISSES.

If my non verbal 2 year old gets it I think an older child would?

I personally don't think this is a nice thing to say to a child, and I'm just being honest.

"Caleb if you dont stop annoying ya sis I am going to beat you within an inch of your life" He gets the point. They all do actually.
It's one thing to say something like "I'll hold you by your toes" because it's obviously a joke... I mean, it's really unrealistic to do that.

But to say "I am going to beat you" is just a mean thing to say to a kid.

It would've made me upset if my parents ever said that. I just find it as an inappropriate thing to say to a kid.

Yeah I don't have any desire to tell Briggs I'm going to beat him. Or even raise my voice at him in an angry way while telling him he's the most amazing thing on earth. He knows a joking tone though already, and loves it when I "threaten" him.

I'm sure my mom has joked that she's going to "smack my butt" while laughing and joking. lol.

I guess I don't see using the phrase "I'm going to beat you" as anything to joke about. I don't understand how that could even be funny, even if you were laughing while saying it.

I just think it's inappropriate.

I can see where you are coming from. I don't say that to Briggs. I tell him if he's going to be that darn naughty he is going to get attacked with kisses till he behaves himself.

I think it's one thing if all parties involved know it's a joke... but sometimes jokes can cross a line so quickly. I remember being a little kid playing catch with a ball with my dad. He threw it to me and I didn't catch it and it whacked me in the face. We laughed about it. I threw it back to him, and he threw it back to me - and this time intentionally hit me in the face with it. Like seriously hit me in the face, it hurt bad enough to make me cry.
This was over 20 years ago and this memory still bothers me.

I don't believe kids need to be handled with satin gloves or anything but I do think people should be careful. And honestly, in this day and age, saying stuff like that is asking for trouble, even in the privacy of your own home... God forbid the kid goes to school and says to another kid in play, "I'm going to beat you to an inch of your life!" and the teacher asks where the kid heard that, and the kid says "Oh Mommy says it all the time!"

So yeah... I don't know... it's good if everybody involved knows it's a joke and is laughing about it but I do feel it's inappropriate and could escalate quickly.
