God, I've been to the vet's too often lately, LOL! (Friday and monday so far)

Anyways, Beau and Nard were running the back yard about 2 hours ago when Beau pulled up suddenly and stopped. I couldn't get a good look at him because Nard was bouncing around. A few minutes later I noticed Beau limping really badly. I called him over, thinking he'd gotten a bur in his foot. I started feeling his foot and he yelped really loudly and pulled it away. I found no burs but if you touched his last toe on his front left paw he'll yelp. He started walking again and gradually is walking normal again. He still will hold the paw up when he's standing every now and then.

Now he seems to be putting weight on it and walking alright but if you touch his outermost toe he'll cry. I've never had a dog break a toe, but I'd think he'd be still limping. I still can't feel anything caught under his pad or on his nail either.

Harry had this issue (sortof) this passed fall.

He would limp on his front foot but still run and play. but when you would move it and palpate it, he would flinch, so i wrapped it for an hour or two while he was walking around the house, to give it a rest. Then take the wrapping off, let him go out and do his thing and bring him in and ice it if it swelled, which it only did once. I used wrapping gauze and then covered it in vetwrap, then let him get around like that....

Took awhile, but it healed up on its own and is as good as new.
Broken toe, not much they'll do for it. Sprained toe bout the same...

So time and just keeping an eye on it would be my best advice. If it gets worse in the next few days THEN call and talk to the vet.

Yeah, I'd take him in :( That's how Jake broke his toe. It didn't start swelling untill 3 days after the break and he would still put a little weight on the foot, but man if you touched the broken toe, he pulled it back and/or cried.

Laurelin, your family is not responsible for paying all the vets expenses each month... thats what the other patients are for!

No advice, never had a broken toe... I hope he heals up soon.

If it were me (and it has been me many, many times) I'd give it a couple of days as long as he's not showing extreme anguish. By that I mean crying, howling in misery or showing extreme pain. He may have broken a toe and there's not much to do about that anyhow. More likely is that he over stretched a muscle or twisted something and he'll be fine. If there is absolutely no sign of improvement in a day or two, then take him in. That's my take on it anyhow. Keep him fairly quiet and see how it is tomorrow.

Lol, I know! I've been in so many times lately they know me well.

He's not in any pain unless you touch it, then he yelps. Outside he was trying to run on it but after a couple minutes had started limping pretty badly again.

I can't get him in today anyways, but we'll just see how it's doing tomorrow. I may wrap it myself for tonight. He's a hard dog to keep quiet. When he had his back injury, he was miserable being still for a few weeks. Hopefully it'll heal soon.

I guess he just needs time to heal that broken toe. Give it a few more days. When I first encountered a broken toe in my dog, I brought her to the vet immediately since she was bleeding so much and the bleeding won't stop. The vet had to give her a sedative to lessen the bleeding. But I guess in your case, it is ok to give her a few more days to heal.

it sounds alot like what happend to vixie, she was running round then all of a sudden a yelp and she was limping...i couldnt touch it and she wouldnt put ANY weight on it for a good few hours...
called the vet they suggested 1/2 an uncoated baby asprin a warm compres and give it a couple of days as it was likely just a twist...aparently its VERY unusual for the little guys to actually break a toe simply because of how compact their feet are, but twists and sprains are pretty common part due to a tiny divit to them being like a giant pothole...

vixie was back to her old self within a week...

id give it a few days, if it starts to swell or the pain/limping gets worse take him in.

Lilly did the same thing on Saturday. I just gave her 1/4 Rimadyl and she is back to her old self. Don't worry too much, take him in if it starts swelling.

I hope Beau feels better soon! I, too, would give it a few days.

Epsom salt soaks are amazing for helping acheyness and reducing swelling. Give him a couple a day (a few minutes each) and try to keep him quiet.

Beau is the worst dog to try to keep quiet. We've been there before and it was really hard. He seems less sore today but he still cries if you touch it or if he does something wrong. He's walking and playing normal though and it hasn't swelled yet. I think he probably just sprained it or pulled something.
