I'm not sure why but my cat, a very large brown tabby, Moby, seems to think I require his assistance when I go to the bathroom.

I don't work or go to school right now so we spend our days lounging about, reading, napping, sitting on the deck outside and generally enjoying each others' company in a calm and affectionate way.

I get up and down from the couch, go here and there to tidy up and Moby will happily snooze in a patch of sun on the chair. But if I get up to go to the bathroom...well, that's a different story altogether.

I've only had Moby for about 2 years. We adopted him from our local shelter where he had lived for 6 months. He got my attention immediately. He's enormous and gorgeous. He was a little stand-offish at first but warmed up quickly and fully.

About a year ago he decided that I wasn't to venture into the bathroom alone. I'm not sure if he sense some kind of bathroom threat to my safety? Or maybe I'm giving off some subconscious vibe that I can't handle myself in the washroom? I'm not sure, but either way Moby's decided that I need a chaperone.

Everytime I get up and go to the bathroom by the time I hit the bathroom door he's behind me. It doesn't matter if he's sleeping or engaged in something else. He'll be at that door. I'm alone most of the time and our bathroom door has to be pushed really hard to shut completely so I generally just push it closed without the *click*.

Moby, being the size he is, thinks nothing of ramming his shoulder into the door and swinging it wide open. Usually I'm on the toilet by that point, but it doesn't bother him any. His company usually consists of either staring at me, at close range (to make sure everything is in check, I guess?) or weaving between my ankles and the toilet.

TMI or not, when I'm done my business Moby will generally guard the toilet until the flushing has done it's job, whether I leave the room or not. More than once he's stood up, put his front paws on the toilet seat and watched the action unfold.

Then we both go back to our normal lives, as though visiting the washroom wasn't the most action-packed (and potentially dangerous!) activity of the day.

And, yes, I can shut the bathroom door if I so choose. And yes, he does stand directly outside of it until the moment I open the door, when he marches into the washroom and does a quick but thorough investigation of the room to ensure everything is as it should be.

Does anyone else get bathroom visitors?

:lol-sign: oh man.. I needed a good laugh. I had a cat that used to be obsessed with watching the toilet flush. And Maggie always has to be in the bathroom when I'm taking a shower :p

Rosey can be sleeping, she hears somebody heading upstairs during the day, and she speeds past them to get to the bathroom first. She tries to trip us so she can beat us, I swear! lol She'll look in the bathroom, then sit down and let us go in and then she'll be waiting there til we come out, then she'll go in to check things out.
She also drinks from the toilet, and I swear this is the only dog I know who people will wait in line to use the bathroom. You try to go in front of her, she won't shut up about it.

When my ferret, Rascal, has free run of the house, he follows me into the bathroom, no matter where he is. Only me though, anybody else he doesn't mind. Also, if he is downstairs and I head up to go to the bathroom (sometimes he's already up there) he will weave around my feet as I'm walking up. He's almost been stepped on sooo many times because of that lol. He'll go into the bathroom, and decide to play with whatevers on the floor til I leave and tell him its time to go. I guess that may be because he's not allowed in the bathroom otherwise (door is kept shut when he is out)

I had a friend whose big furry black cat, Albert, would rush to the bathroom ahead of anyone headed that way.

He had an agenda though. He was very possessive of his litterbox, located in the downstairs bathroom. If he got in before the door shut he'd guard the box to make sure you didn't use HIS litter. If you got in and shut the door ahead of Albert, he'd sulk outside the door, then rush in immediately when it opened and go sniffing and pawing through his litter to make absolutely certain you hadn't used it. :rofl1:

hahaha...awesome.

Moby's litterbox used to be in the bathroom...maybe he developed a fear that if he didn't run into the bathroom when he had the chance that he'd be caught out when he needed it! Like when you run to get into the washroom before someone has a long bath or shower.

Moby also had the curious habit of preferring to use his litterbox whilst someone was using the toilet. I think he'd actually hold it until he could make it a tandem activity. :D
