In lieu of the e-drama I started in the Korean dog thread, I got to thinkin'...which is dangerous.

I've eaten some weird stuff in my 35+ year stint on earth. Being a die-hard carnivore, most of my odd meals have at one time walked, crawled, swam, flew or slithered around.

Different cultures around the world obviously have varying views on what, or more specifically, what is NOT taboo to eat.

Lest we who have "sinned" cast the first stone...I'll start with where I grew up, SW Ohio. I'm a hilljack by birthright, and man...my people eat some weird stuff! "Rocky mountain oysters" aka deer nuts. Yup. Tried 'em. Ick. If they were fried I probably would have liked them, though. Hell you could deep fry a cat turd and put it on a stick and I'll like it. Anyways...I also have eaten a few critters you can find in the woods out back. Squirrels, rabbits, and I even had possum once in a stew. Deer are cute. They are also delicious. I've also had elk, moose, and caribou when travelling out west. Yum. My actual favorite meat is wild boar. Down south I've eaten turtles, frogs, alligator, and bit the heads off of pounds of crayfish.

As an adult I lived for quite some time in a community that was 80% Asian, and the friends I met there got me to eat a bunch of stuff I never would have imagined. I never had dog or cat, but I have it on pretty good authority the food grade version of dogs are available for personal consumption deep down in the Asian market community. **NOTE** The following info is straight from my friend's lips, when I asked him about it. He's from mainland China: Yes, dogs ARE eaten commonly in Asia, not just Korea. Old habits die hard, as they say, and dog consumption in this country is generally confined to those who are newer arrivals to our country, and usually only among those from more rural areas. Even in Asia, Fido the family dog is safe at home or on the farm. Consumable dogs are bred like any domestic food animal we have here. Rumors that crazed Asians kidnap dogs in Golden Gate park are patently false. Fluffy missing? Li or Tran are NOT grilling her up on the Weber. Even here, the rare practice of dog eating has it's own sources that ARE NOT the pound or the dog park. /end rant.

O.K., done ranting, the odd stuff my Asian friends introduced me to were not weird by what they were when they were alive, but more so how they were prepared. For instance, most of us have had frog legs. Yum. The first time I ordered "fried frog" at a local Chinese place in San Fran I was taken aback when the owner came out with a bucket and said "which one"? In the bucket were about 8 HUGE Bullfrogs, bigger than my hand. "That one", I said as I pointed, "He looks sad anyway!" 10 minutes later I had a big ole plate of fried frog bits with garlic and black bean sauce. It was awesome. They eat most of the frog, not just the legs. If you get fish, it generally has a head. Fish never look happy when you're eating them. The other thing I got to love out there was raw stuff. Sushi, sashimi. I know it sounds gross, but it's awesome and very, very good for you. Raw lobster served on a bed of ice is unbelievably tasty, and a TRUE natural aphrodisiac ::wink, wink::.

Other weird crap I've had is BBQ'd goat, cooked in a traditional Mexican way where it's cooked in an underground "oven" of sorts. It was awesome. I've also had rattlesnake, bear, and savage duck.

So let's review:

Mammals I done 'et:

Squirrel
Rabbit
Pussum
Deer (nuts and all)
Elk
Caribou
Moose
Bear
Wild Bore
Goat
Cow
Pig

Birds:

Chicken
Turkey
Pheasant
Game Hen
Quail
Duck
Spotted Owl (just kidding)

Reptiles/Amphibians

Snake
Turtle
Frog
Alligator

Fish:

Most

Up here skunk is really good.
We have skunks here too. Oddly enough, I was talking to Mrs. BG tonight on the way home about skunks. Smell them all the time, occasionally see them squished on the road after they tire-dance with a Silverado, etc...but I've never in 35 years seen a skunk walking around in the wild. I've seen them at zoos, and pet ones at the vet, but I've never seen a real LIVE skunk.

Can you really eat them? Is the white meat located right under the stripe?

Well, meat-wise in my pre-veg era I was 'tricked' into eating venison. Or veal. I don't remember. But I was adamant about not eating either of them and someone lied to me to see if I'd like it. Which I did but I was pretty miffed. I know that's not that extreme.

I've had bee pollen (yuck), nutritional yeast (yuck), and natto (yuck and then yum) Natto is fermented soy beans that smell like sweaty socks. Who knew you could learn to like sweaty socks! I've also had tempeh and lots of different kinds of seaweed. And tofu which many many people won't try.

I know, I'm not nearly as adventurous as ButtGumbo.

Yep you can eat them and they are safe to eat I think. Don't know about the white meat thing I have never cooked them my dad did once and that was the first time I have eaten one.

I can't belive that you have never seen one walking around. Normaly I see them walking around our lawn for about five minutes then I get moving target practice when they head twords the chiken coup.

Don't sell yourself short. Vegetarians, IMNSHO, eat WAY grosser stuff than us carnivores. My wife could easily be a vegitarian, she loves almost anything that isn't meat and only a few things that are.

Our best friends and neigbors in California were Indian, and strict vegetarians. When we ate over there I respected their house and ate their fare. She was evidently a GREAT Indian cook in the traditional vegetarian realm, so i know it wasn't bad cooking. All those weird peppers and pasty crushed whatever just tasted horrible to me. I mainly stuck to the little pancakes that looked like tortillas and drank more wine! I DO like curry though, but prefer it with meat. My wife makes green curry which I deplore, but I kinda like the red curry stuff.

Scobe, where abouts do you live? I want to talk to you about a bike thing. PM me, brah.

I've had venison and veal. Veal was a non event, I liked venison okay. I've tried snails - too chewy for me. I think I tried bbq Kangaroo in Aus, but never sure whether it really was or my friends were winding me up. When I was a kid we used to eat fried sheeps brains, but I think they are banned now.

LOL, I'm with Bassetlover. I don't like to try new foods - it freaks me out. I was 4-years-old before I would even try icecream! I was my parents nightmare at mealtime - I didn't like anything!

Not so adventurous here either:
Deer (venison)
cow (in pretty much every form it can be served)
Pig (refer to comments made beside cow)
Moose
Bison
Rabbit
Several different forms of fowl
Lots of sea creatures
Goat (as in curried goat)
and Tofu - which didn't taste bad, I just didn't like the texture.

Before I became vegetarian again, I ate fish and duck...I didn't want to, of course, my Mom made me. Other than that, I can't think of anything that is disgusting in my opinion, LOL.

I've eaten pig, cow, and chicken, and turkey also, but those I consider "normal" and they don't smell as bad as fish does.....

Lotta Gator served up here during football season! :p

I ate seaweed once growing up in California. I loved it! Some friends who owned a Mexican restaurant invited me for a "family" dinner once and we had barbecued goat which was excellent.

Fried squid tasted like rubberbands . . .
