I'm seriously thinking about this breed for my next dog, which will most likely be from a breeder. I would love to have a Rhodesian again, but I'm not sure if I'm ready, and I'm not sure if I'd ever be ready again.

We had a standard poodle for about six or seven years when I was really young. We got him from my dad's friend (a standard poodle breeder) who passed away at a very young age in a car accident. His wife couldn't take care of all the dogs, so she gave the stock/show quality ones to other breeder/show homes, and the pet quality ones to pet homes. We ended up with Fluffer, he was six years old at the time, and was a neutered male. I was about three or four when we got him, and he passed away the summer after fifth grade so I don't really remember a whole lot about him.

So...standard poodles. What can you tell me?

I had a standard poodle several years ago! his name was Rex, he was the smartest dog I have EVER met! He came to us completly trained. His original owne/breeder ran a dog training place and Rex was the "demonstration dog".
He was very sweet, and gentle. He would be sitting down and my then three year old niece would sit on him like he was a horse or something... he loved it!
We ended up having to have him put to sleep though. He had colon cancer and it went downhill FAST. Rex was my mom's heart dog...

I'll see if I can find a picture with my niece and rex.

Smart, bouncy, goofy. Can be a bit guardy. Most of the standards I have met have great temperaments except 2.

LOVE THEM!!

I've never owned one but had the pleasure of fostering one and helping one with transport (he stayed here for the day). I've groomed many and I've never encountered one with a bad disposition.

They are water retrievers so like other retrievers they are active at a young age so they do need exercise. Most do mellow nicely around 3 years of age.

I'm definitely getting one sometime in the later future. If the breeder I know now is still breeding them then I know where I'm getting him. And yes, getting a male, black....even have a name already picked out. lol

They're smart and really nice, funny dogs, but the ones I've known have been VERY vocal.

UKC accepts partis... CKC and AKC do not. I've heard that the parti poodle competition in UKC is often really hardcore as it's their only venue.. So you only see the best of the best..

I'm not sure what I think of UKC accepting them and no other registry though.

A good party breeder is hard to find though their are some out there. They are beautiful but I prefer solids. I don't know if it's because the party colors tend to make the body structur look different or if it's just because the ones I've seen were of poor quality.

We do get some at the rescue I volunteer at. The one I transported was a silver and white one that was only 6 or 7 months old.
Sammy, he was the sweetest guy!

I've met a parti before...that was the coolest looking dog!

I've actually been doing some research on this because I've sort of been eyeing poodles myself  They used to be a lot more prevalent in earlier years, including the AKC rings. Many of the working dogs in old pictures are parti-colored and it seems to be one of those whims of the show world to disqualify the parti-color as acceptable. There are still some great breeders out there, like Gina said, because the UKC accepts them.

I'd kind of like to have a parti-color. It'd go perfectly with my plan to keep them in the "ponydoodle" cut. :D

I like Spoos a lot. Some of them are sharper than I really want in a dog, though. They're on my short list of dog breeds. I don't have any particular opinion on colors other than I prefer not apricot. I think it's stupid that the AKC doesn't allow Particolored dogs, but there's a lot about the AKC that I think is stupid....

Standards, in my experience, are very smart, high energy, and tend to be very loyal dogs. : ) I would love to get one, someday. I grew up around Poodles.

As far as Partis... I'm on the fence. I have seen paintings/photos from 100's of years ago of Parti Standards, and I have no doubt that the trait is part of the breed. However, because Partis are not in the standard and Poodles are SUCH a show breed, I cannot imagine finding a reputable breeder with any Parti puppies. D= I'm not particularly into the whole spotted look on a Poodle, anyway. I like Chocolates a lot.

I have a Standard that will be a year old next week. He is fantastic. He is very intelligent, calm for a large breed dog, and has a great disposition. He is very gentle with the two smaller dogs, and only barks if it is necessary. He is a little wary around other dogs at first, especially if they bark, but quickly warms up to them. He loves people, but isn't over-exuberant when greeting them. He is the sweetest boy, he loves to be near us, and is content lounging on the couch chewing on his bird toy. He is still a little clumsy, but is growing into himself very well.

Really, his only faults is the grooming (which I do myself) and a little bit of separation anxiety (he follows us around the house constantly).

He learns mainly by copying the other two. He never had an accident in the house, and required no potty training (we got him at 14 weeks). He also learned to jump through a hoop by watching the other two do it for treats. He now LOOVVEESS to jump through it, especially if you toss a toy for him to catch as he jumps through.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
