I am curious, are raw eggs, of course without the shell on them, good for dogs? I have been feeding them to Hershey. one a day, and his coat is gorgeous! Is it bad to feed him raw eggs?

Raw eggs are a fabulous addition to the diet. You can give the shell too, but some dogs don't like it.

Hannah gets raw eggs a couple times a week. If I don't give her the shell that day I will keep it, dry it out, and give it to her on a day when I thinking she hasn't been getting enough bones in her diet and ground it up in her meat for her. She won't eat the shell just plain but if it's mixed in with ground meats or something she will eat it.

So you just crack open the egg and give it to them? What about cholesterol?

Yes, I always just plop the raw egg on top of their kibble.

Cholesterol doesn't effect dogs the way it does people. Eggs are a very healthy addition, but it's important you give the whole raw egg, not just yolk or whites.

Raw eggs are great. My chis get them a few times a week. I crack the egg, and then plop it in their kibble (I mix it all together with a fork) :D

Is it just as good if you cook it? How about salmonella? I have been giving Colt a cooked egg once or twice a week (usually on Sundays after we eat our big breakfast).

Marq used to be fed an egg in his meal once a day. They can also be given the shell, but it is probably best to crush it up into extremely tiny pieces, almost like a powder, and just mix it in with the rest of their food and the egg.

Just a caution

I've never had a problem with feeding raw eggs, but the egg white contains an enzyme called avidin that inhibits the absorption of biotin. Cooking deactivates this enzyme. Like I said tho, I've never had a problem!

I wouldn't worry about the biotin problem Cassie. Mordy, our food expert, says there is more than enough in the egg to compensate.

My dogs love raw eggs. I feed them whole and they drop them on the floor and eat them all. Or I keep the shells, bake them and grind them for calcium powder.

Like Saje said, if you feed the yolk with the whites then there is more than enough biotin to compensate. :)

I was told by the vet that feeding eggs is not good in hot climates because they heat the skin. Does this sound right?

I give our guys a couple eggs a week. I take them outside and hand them the egg, and they figure out how to open it up. It's funny watching the different techniques they use. Sometimes they eat the shell, sometimes they don't.

I've never heard of the eggs in hot climates thing, I'd be interested in hearing the vet's theory on that one.

I give the boys raw eggs as well. Ronan especially needs it being that he is red his coat isn''t exactly the greatest so it easily dries out or gets burnt by the sun. Raw eggs along with olive oil and canola oil helps keep his coat rich and healthy.

I'm still not clear on the "cooked" egg thing. Colt likes his scrambled - hehe. Also what's that "hot climate" thing all about?

Iam not quite sure about the hot climate thing I feed them three times a week to each one and weget rather hot days in the summer . And all I know about scrambling them is when we have a litter which is about every other year our vet tells us to scramble 6 or 7 and let the new mom eat it to boost her protein they bounce back faster and I have found that true . other than that no clue :)

Mine get an egg a few times a weeks as well. But Lizzie seems to be on the picky side lately and will only eat the egg if it is cooked

But Majors loves it raw.
