can you tell as soon as the bubs are born (pretty much)?

Its been ages since i've been involved with a litter and can't remember at all..

Basically what has happened is, I've reserved a bichon frise x jack russell puppy :p and their breeder can't tell what gender they are..

But they were only born today..

The condition is, I will only get the puppy if its a girl..
But apart from being a girl, it has too meet a few other standards too.. :p

I have actually been interested in this litter since late last year when she first mentioned it, and Taj was really the accidently brought puppy :p

Um... Yes. I sure hope you're not paying much for a mixed breed litter with no titles from a breeder who can't even tell if the dogs are male or female.

We have a ton of those in rescue here, enjoy.

This litter was planned? Aside from that -- she shouldn't be breeding (mix or non-mix) if she can't even tell what sex a puppy is when it is born. Yikes.

If the "breeder" cannot tell the sex of the puppies (dogs don't have genders) RUN, do not walk, RUN AWAY FROM THIS "BREEDER"!!!

Huuuuuge red flag. Their parts look different from birth so if she can't tell then she's not educated enough to own intact animals at all. Not to mention she's breeding a useless mix, what's the point of a bichon mixed with a JRT? Nothing at all. Plus i doubt either dog has been health tested or titled in anything and who knows if the female even received proper medical care and nutrition during pregnancy as most of these byb mix breeders don't even bother.

Run away now... This is not a person you should get a pup from.

ETA: What about all those dogs that people wanted to rehome with you?

As soon as they are delivered you can tell whether they have a penis or not, it's not rocket science. Was she being serious?!

I know guys. She is my ex's mother, so I can't say much, but I have had more then a few little rants too her about breeding her dogs when she shouldn't. She is a stubborn old Italian lady who doesn't listen to anyone, though (no offence to other old Italian ladies :p)

I grabbed Taj after I posted this and was like, "how could she not see little penis's!" lol
I don't think she had looked properly and just wanted me to stop asking questions :p

I'm paying $160 ($20 discount because I am her ex daughter in law *rolls eyes*)
I have her husband talking too her about the price, and proper nutrition and vet care. She will listen to him, and he knows how serious I am about all this stuff.

From what I have seen she takes really good care of her dogs. They all live inside and are always well fed.

I know she is getting the mum spayed after this litter (her second). Her husband is making her, because they are "too old to be raising kids!! *angry face*"

You're paying $160? You're still overpaying! IMO. She should have spayed AND neutered both of her dogs after the first litter. Rehoming all the puppies is now HER problem, not yours. I know with family it's difficult, but you can definately come up with an excuse to back out of getting this puppy.

Why are you paying to get a pup from a BYB? Please read some of the stickies on the forum.

LOL, are you serious? There is no way in hell that you can't tell the sex of puppies. If they don't have penises, and I had to take a wild stab at what else they could possibly be, I'd say they're probably females.

The reason you're getting a strong reaction out of people is because as long as you continue to think "omg cute puppy, I want one" and give your money (and support) to people like that, you're encouraging their practices. The world does not need more carelessly bred dogs.

If you want a random mixed breed crapshoot puppy, I am sure there are lots in shelters. Hell, if there aren't, I will ship a homeless puppy here to you for less than what you'd be paying to support a BYB. There are always homeless dogs in Mexico!

Ok, so you already know she shouldn't be breeding her dogs, yet you are encouraging her to do so. I'm confused.

Also, since you already have a pretty young puppy, I would hold off on adding another for a while anyways.

There you go. This would be a much better option IMO. I have one of these mexican rescues from RD and she's amazing.. or maybe check with a rescue in your area? Sure the pups are prob cute and they're going to need homes too, I get that. But... when you purposely purchase from a breeder that knowingly bred these mixed dogs and then tries to sell them... you're supporting BYB's regardless of your intentions.

you've got to me kidding me, yes kittens can be hard to tell at first, but dogs are so obvious it is a no brainer. As long as people keep supporting byb and puppymills they will exist. Retract your money now. I don't care if it was my great aunt who was going to leave me her estate in the will I would not support someone breeding with so little knowledge of basic information. If they can't even pick up a book and read about breeding they should not be in it at all. Oh to the days when notes were taken on a dog's ability, bloodlines were followed and charted, and months of field trials were spent observing the potential parents discussing their traits and what would be good. A high driven dog, with a common sense intelligent one who was not quite so "high". There was no random pairing at the kennel I grew up at, and the dogs were healthy, smart, and long lived. I would laugh about someone not being able to tell sex if it wasn't so terribly sad.

I agree with the others, that is way too much to pay for a mixed breed. For a similar price at a shelter you could get not only a puppy, but it would include a spay/neuter and probably first shots too. Did people actually pay her for her first litter of mixed breeds?

If I were you I would say "no thank you" to the pup. There are tons of mixed breeds, small mixes included in shelters or rescues that need homes, and the money you pay for an adoption fee would be helping a good cause rather than lining the pockets of someone who is so irresponsible and ignorant of dog breeding that they can't even tell what sex the pups are.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but there are good places to get dogs and bad places to get dogs, and you can either be part of the irresponsible breeding problem or part of the solution. Buying a pup from this woman is NOT being part of the solution, IMHO....

To be fair, I paid over $200 for each of my dogs and I got them from a shelter. At the same time though, the shelter had paid for some of their vaccinations and them being neutered, so "eh"...

But yes, I agree. I also can't stand a "re homing" fee going to a deliberately bred litter. That's not re homing them, that's selling them. And what is the point of selling something you can get at a shelter? You can't get a show dog or a pet quality puppy with dam and sire health tested and temperament tested from a shelter, that's why you go to a breeder. If you are going to get something less quality than an experienced, professional breeder you might as well go to a shelter, but that is my opinion.

THIS.

Honestly, I would focus on Sophie and some of the training issues that you've posted about recently before adding another puppy... especially adding another puppy that would be supporting a BYB. :(

Please do not support this woman. If a so-called breeder can't even tell the sex of their puppies what other vital stuff do they not know? Take your money and support to a good breeder, or rescue a dog from a shelter. There wouldn't be so many BYBs if people did their homework and got their puppies elsewhere.

If you have $160 to spare and want one of these pups, offer to make a $160 donation to your local shelter in exchange for one of the pups. At least that way your money is going towards HELPING dogs, not hurting them.

I don't have a thing in the world against mutts, I have two now and have loved many over the years, great dogs. But why deliberately produce them when they're dying in shelters in obscene numbers every day?
