I graduated with a psych degree and now work in HR for a software company. I actually started out in engineering so that background helps me a bit too.

I don't think doing something you hate is a good idea.

Is going to grad school not an option for you? Because an undergrad in psych isn't going to get you a high paying job in the field of psychology, but you can then go on to grade school in animal behavior, a master's in psych, some kind of social work, or lots of other psychology related sciences.

I don't think it is either, but I think it's important to be realistic and find a balance between something you like/are good at and something that will solidly pay for the lifestyle you want to live. If there's a career out of a psych major that JM is interested in where the average salary will pay her bills, then it's not a bad choice.

I majored in psych because I LOVED the classes, and I knew I wanted to be a dog trainer and that a psych degree would help me there.

By my sophomore year, though, I realized that getting into dog training might not happen - also a difficult field to get into - and that I really had no "fall back" career path with a psych major. So I added a social work major, and ended up graduating with a double major.

Social work classes bored me, but I did like the field (BSWs have a pretty wide variety of career choices, I really liked that) and I was literally guaranteed a job right out of college. I started training dogs professionally my last semester of college, so I've never done social work outside of my internships and such, but it's nice to know I have something to fall back on.

So yeah, I really have no advice for you. :) Just thought I'd share my experience. ;)

Definitely agree with this, which is why I'm so reluctant.

I originally was going to do the vet tech thing but found out that, even in MD where jobs are pretty decent, just barely pay the bills.

See, this is me. I know my dream would be to be a dog trainer. And this area is actually pretty good for it, it seems. Is it more about experience and who you know, rather than actual schooling?

Do you have any tips for me? I'm experienced in training simply by teaching myself. But did you go to a school, how do you get started? Animal training is totally my passion. Everyone around me says I have a knack for it. YouTube - Jackson's Tricks - April 2010 (this is an old video, but you get the point, lol. I love training!) and learn something new every day.
