Does he regularly have anxiety issues?

The reason I ask is because Hannah does. As you probably remember, she has bloated/torsioned, and had two bouts with hemorrhagic gastro-enteritis. She has had chronic stomach issues for over a year and a half now.

Finally, in April or May, when we noticed her anxiety levels getting worse, we consulted with our vet who put her on an anti-anxiety medication.

It's done wonders for her stomach. She's also on a prescription diet and other medications, but the anti-anxiety meds are what I've noticed to help the most.

I know when I'm stressed, my stomach is the first thing to be affected.

Anyhow, good luck with his recovery. I know how frustrating it can be, and how sad it is to see them miserable.

Besides getting a consult and good diet going for Caiza, do you think the cause of his problem will be discovered and treated? Did the vet have any ideas as to what it might be?
She said it is definately gastritis but also said it could be IBS, or possible Gastroenteritis/colitis, or early hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.... :( He is on flagyl twice a day and 20 mg of pepcid once a day plus the bland diet. I just went and picked him up a small bag of Canidae lamb and rice which I won't even start for a few days but I wanted to have it ready. I hope Mordy gets back to me soon. I won't mind cooking for Caiza Doberluv as you do for Lyric I actually would rather do that :)

Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like I was hijacking the thread with Hannah news. I was just wanting to suggest the correlation between Anxiety and her stomach issues in case it could be the same type of problem with Caiza.

That's why I was asking if he had anxiety issues or if it was just vet related? I know with Hannah, no matter WHAT food we tried (and good grief, did we try them ALL), until we got the anxiety under control, nothing helped completely. It was a combo of things, but the anxiety meds play a huge role in her wellness. If I could only teach her to meditate instead. :p

He doesn't usually have anxiety issues just at the vet and he needs to be muzzled but does cooperate pretty well. I would love to know what you are feeding Hannah Shadowface!

do you think yogurt would be a good thing to add considering that flagyl is pretty darn potent? Intestinal yeasts can cause a lot of gastro problems and is just now being taken seriously by some doctors in humans.

I just posted at the same time as you...lol. Just ignore what I typed.

Hannah is eating Purina EN. I know, bleck. But it works for her. The combo of medications and the food is the only thing that has worked.

Seeing her on deaths doorstep several times over has led me to try many things. What we're doing for her now is the ONLY thing that has kept us from being in the vets office at least once a week for a while.

She takes Gastricalm AM and PM for her stomach
Clomipramine AM and PM for anxiety
And eats the EN formula.

(Plus her addison's meds and her back meds)

Jeff has forbidden me to look at the lable on her food. He said JUST SEE IF IT WORKS before you start picking it apart. And, like I said, the anxiety meds play a huge role, but we recently tried switching her food....no go. It was loose poop central. Nothing like the past, but I could see it easily turning into a problem. So, we're sticking with the combo of what she's been doing well on.

I never thought I'd be feeding one of "those" diets. But it works for her.

Okay, you are scaring me.........what do you mean potent? I have always given Caiza yogurt in his food so I guess I could do that. It is part of a bland diet right?

What is Purina EN  or what does the EN stand for? LOL! Hey sometimes the most unexpected things work :) Sometimes I think maybe Caiza would be better off eating crap food than all this fancy stuff :D

I suspect Mordy will recommend some type of acidophilus. She did for Lyric as these good bacteria help break things down and regulate things. With my home cooked meals, there are a ton of suppliments, vitamins and minerals, some of which are meant for the liver, plus he's on 3 prescriptions, which really are the core of his treatment. I'm also thinking accupuncture.

Hi Shanon,

I'm certainly no expert, but Eagle Pack does sell a supplement to help dogs with intestinal problems:
http://www.eaglepack.com/Pages/HS_Solution.html

Also, Drs Foster & Smith has a good acidophilus supplement:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=823&N=2001+113753

Only Natural Pet also has a few:

http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Vetri-Science-Fast-Balance-GI/125021.aspx
http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Ark-Naturals-Gentle-Digest/121017.aspx
http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Animal-Essentials-Plant-Enzymes-Probiotics/148017.aspx

Of course, talk to a vet (or Mordy) before administering any of these.

P.S. Hope Caiza is feeling better today!

So sorry to read about Caiza! :(

I hope he pulls through with this. I would definitely try the duck and oatmeal mix. If he has a yeast issue, I think that the oatmeal would be helpful because oatmeal isn't a simple carbohydrate that can be easily converted to sugar by the body (like refined wheats can) and thus depriving the yeast of a food source. I have a friend with an internal yeast infection so serious it nearly killed him and now he'll likely be disabled for life. Not to scare you, but these can be serious. The key to controlling the issue is to not feed the yeast simple sugars or carbohydrates that the body turns into sugar which, in turn, feeds the yeast. In these cases a holistic working in conjunction with a traditional vet might work really well.
