No, a health certificate simply states the animal isn't sick, has been wormed, UPT on vacs, etc and is fit for travel.

Actually, a health certificate only shows that the dog is free of contagious disease, not that it is healthy or even not "sick" (as in suffering from a genetic or congenital defect). If it is old enough for a rabies that will be on there as well. If the breeder does their own vaccines and wormings that will not be on the health certficate nor are vaccines and worming required for travel.

I got a puppy from a breeder in AL near the Georgia line.

I got a 72 hour non-sick guarantee and a 3 year no hereditary illness guarantee.

We drove 4 hours last night to get him. He was 600$, and 14 weeks old.
He's going into the vet Monday, and seems very helpful. I'll post a picture when I'm not so tired.

Like sitting outside for 40 minutes waiting for Sushi (yes I named him Sushi) to potty, then my neighbor probably thinks I'm crazy for being so excited over a bowel movement....

He's a great puppy, I'm happy I made this decision, even though it ended up being a little last minute. :)

Thanks, Zoom, Grammy. (((hugs)))

FBD, just curious, but did you at least read my post? And it still didn't sway your decision? Did you check out the Shiba Web I linked to? And the National Shiba Club of America?

I wish you the best of luck with your pup, but since you're an inexperienced Shiba owner, PLEASE please please please contact the breed club and ask for information, Shiba forums, contact information of Shiba owners/breeders/handlers/trainers near you, any sort of information or contacts you can get. And get the numbers of some trainers who use positive reinforcement in your area and enroll yourself in some classes even if you already know how to train, it'll benefit you both (there's a really good database you can use to search for trainers, if you want I bet I can find it for you). And research NILF training. From all I have heard about Shibas, they are a LOT of dog, especially for the first time owner, and jumping in as prepared as possible should be your first goal. Good luck! :)

Yes I read your post. I bought my puppy from a different breeder, not the one I was asking about, not sure if anyone understood that.

I'm already signed up for classes starting on the 29th. And I'm going to the vet today.
And I've had other dogs before, just not a Shiba. But so far so good. He's basically potty trained himself, no crying when in his pin, Just wont stop the chewing. But I'm working on it. He's learned to walk on lead, and sits when told occasionally. By far the best puppy I've had yet. :)

Oh yeah and he's calm and submissive so far. I didn't get a crazy pup. So that helps me out. :)

They only have ONE of their many dogs registered on the OFA, and just had his hips tested. Well, what's done is done. Congrats on your new puppy.

Yeah I know, I did look at that.

But they LOOK much healthier than the other breeders Shibas did. And I do have a 3 year guarantee from anything hereditary/congenial (er?)

It's congenital, and yes, that's a decent guarantee, but if I was buying a pup form them, I'd want a lifetime guarantee. The only good thing I have to say about them is at least you know your pup should have a good temperament, and at least the pup will look like a Shiba, unlike the first breeder.

Yes, we all understood it. But the Marma isn't all that much better, and any breeder who lets someone make a decision on buying a puppy from them in a couple of days is NOT a reputable breeder.. never mind their lack of health testing. We have a couple excellent breeders on chaz who have been very informative with us on how they select their puppy buyers.. one, who doesn't breed anymore, has actually been following this thread and giving advice to you. I wont bug you any more about this, though since you've already gone through with it. I hope your pup is healthy and stays that way for a very long time. He's cute, and I love the name Sushi. It's good that you guys are already signed up for classes - in fact, that's AWESOME! Just remember to constantly keep working with him, and I suggest you look up NILF training and implement it, at least a little bit. It will make your life sooooo much easier. I have a dog who has always understood he's on the bottom of the food chain and never given anyone any trouble about it, and even implementing NILF with him has made my life easier. With a Shiba, I bet it would help even more, lol!

As for his chewing.. buy lots and lots of chew toys. I don't recommend rawhide, but if you do get it, make sure it's made in the US and ask the company what chemicals are used to process it. I love bully sticks (once again, only US made ones.. merrick and red barn are two US brands I think), wet and frozen rope toys, nylabones - especially the soft ones, hollee rollers, cuzs, and even though I don't have any yet, anything from Planet Dog is supposed to be awesome. A lot of people here swear by planet dog toys. Simple stuff to shred like cardboard is great, too, but it's messy, so it's a crate or outside-only thing. Raw bones are good, too... Middie loves plastic jugs, but depending on his chewing habits, that might not be the best idea for Sushi.

I just got back from the vet! They say he is a very healthy puppy. I just need to do some deworming for 2 more days and clean up after every potty in the meantime.

I'll look into Bully sticks, I've heard nice things about them. He doesn't have rawhide, nor will I give it to him. Right now he has 4 teething toys and a bunch of stuffed animals. The teething toys I keep some in his 'pin' and the stuffed animals he plays with under supervision because he likes to shred them....

I understand the oddness of them not caring that I made the decision the same day I spoke with them... And I also wonder why he's already 14 weeks old and his two littermates have been in new homes but not him...

But he's healthy! And I love him already, he's got a great temperment and is beautiful.
And I will pray, guarantee or no guarantee, that he doesn't have any illnesses that will dramatically affect his life. Though with all dogs, theres a chance.

In any case, I did not ignore anyones advice, I had to find a breeder within my price limit, and yes, I'm not an experienced puppy buyer... But I realized breeder #1 wasn't good... and I do believe Sushi's breeder was decent, if nothing else. Ty all :)
