I thought it would be neat to make a thread about how breeds have changed in the years.

Some breeds I like their early look, and some breeds I like what they have developed into. Most breeds now days are quite over done from what they used to be.

Anyone can add pics to this thread, just wait until I'm done. I have quite a few.

Early rottweilers.

Rottie, 1900.

Rottie, 1912.

I love things like this. The Dobes in the first pic you posted look very similar to Beauceron - they've sure changed a lot since then. I have to say, I much prefer GSDs and Neos of the past. I have some old Toller pictures in my Toller book, but I'll have to see if I can find some online.

The Australian Shepherds of both today and yesteryear still look pretty much the same, so long as one stays out of the show-only lines. Prior to 1955-1960, it's almost impossible to get a definitive picture of an Aussie that was known as such, as the breed was widely scattered and used soley for ranch work. There are paper records dating back to the early 1920's of "blue Australian Shepherds" but few photos accompany those statements.

But here is one of the earlier dogs:

Today's showlines have a lot more white, finer coats and a more pronounced stop that would preclude them from gripping cattle properly. The working lines haven't deviated too much from the original. Form follows function.

It is downright BIZARRE how little working Border Collies have changed...

Old Hemp, circa 1895.

Wiston Cap, circa 1965.

Spontaneous Spottie, circa 2000.

Gonzo, circa now. (ok... so he isn't the best example... but still!)

I know the Border Collies were already posted but I'm going to post more pictures.

Both images date to 1893.

Year 1911.

Don't know the year on this one but I liked it.
