I wanted to share this pic, it's not my dog-nor any dog in my Xerxes' pedigree. This is "Oberon" possibly the closest pharaoh hound to standard ever to grace the US. I, among many in the breed, get shudders when I see this photo. He is everything in moderation: compact, strong, great angulation, and a great head...and that's just for starters.

If I were to ever begin a breeding program, this is what my goal would be-to preserve this form. (I hope the pic posts!)

Wow, he's beautiful!!

I love Pharaohs so much. I wish I was the right sort of owner for them and vice versa, but I'm not, so I can just admire them. :)

Magnificent! He looks like the old paintings and scuptures . . . :hail:Though I wish they weren't holding his colar quite that tight, its hard to see the line of his head and neck.

Xerxes I am just drooling here.........I LOVE nearly any breed that has an athletic look and short coat to freely appreciate the dogs form.

He is SIMPLY GORGEOUS! Thank you for sharing that........but you know you are doing NOTHING to discourage me wanting a PH!

Well if you like peace and quiet, kiss it goodbye if you get a PH.

Watch this video and turn your speakers up loudly...that'll help dissuade you from the PHs.

That picture, as far as I can tell, was taken in 1990 or so. Oberon has been gone for quite a while. I wish he was still around. He did make his mark though. There were two or three super important PH studs Oberon was one and Khanfederate "Rebel" was another-that's my boy's sire and he's been gone for 5 or 6 years as well.

But if you're still up for the Pharaoh Phun day, I can arrange for a few more Pharaohs to molest, annoy, bother, chase and be PITA for your sheeps. ;)

Are Pharoahs similar in temperament to Ibizans?
As far as drive...yes, unequivocally. They are chasers of anything that moves.

As far as temperment...no, sadly they aren't. PH bitches are super serious most of the time. The males are usually out for fun.

Beezers, for themost part are the clowns of the sighthound world-never meeting a stranger, doing silly things just to make you laugh, and quiet (from all the descriptions I've heard)

Oh dear lord they can run!

Nothing greater than watching a sighthound run.

Always wanted an Ibizan but I'm just not set-up with acceptable safe running room. i think it would be a tragedy to never have a hound off-lead

thanks for the link and the pic

Gorgeous...i thought pharoh's were larger though? taller?
Max height should be 24 1/2-25 inches at the shoulder for the males. 23 inches for the females.

The compact size is super important for hunting in their native environment. The topography is filled with rocks and rocky crags so they need to have superb night vision to avoid these things at high speed, and amazing agility to out-turn and out run the hares.

Sadly the breed is growing longer in leg and in length. This would preclude them from performing effectively in their native land. Oberon, the pharaoh pictured, is probably 23 inches or even a bit smaller at the shoulder. Compact in size, moderate tuck, nothing over pronounced about him. One could say he's sublime-able to blend in because no one thing stands out about him. It's the total picture that's important. Of course I look at that pic for 5 or 10 minutes every time I see it, trying to memorize angles and structure.

You've probably already said in some other thread, but where did you get Xerxes?
http://www.pharaoh-hound.com/litters/rebedie.htm

He came from K'azar Pharaohs he was bred by Linda Lysher and Kay Durr. Kay, sadly passed away just after the litter was whelped. Linda, owns Xerxes dam, Ms Edie. They live in Florida. Linda actually agreed to drive up to Savannah GA to meet me 1/2 way so I could pick him up. Heck I would have driven all the way to California to prevent him from having to fly.
