I was curious, because I assume there are not many breeders in the U.S.
Actually, In my view, there are too many. One "breeder" closed up her kennel and turned over 15 pharaohs to the local shelter. 10 are in the hands of the PHCA rescue, the other 5 were refused release to the breed rescue.

The majority of breeders though, do not advertise, nor do they have websites. They are hobby breeders who breed maybe one or two litters every 5 years. Heck my breeder, Linda, hasn't had a litter since my boy's litter. Our line, the true K'azar line, will probably die out. I don't want to see this happen so in order to preserve some semblance of this line I'll be keeping Xerxes unaltered until such a time as I find a suitable match for him. Preferably a cobby bitch with a silly temperment and high prey drive.

:yikes:

I guess what I meant was, I assume there are not a lot of GOOD REPUTABLE breeders around. Yours is the first Pharaoh I have ever seen, aside from possibly on TV, and I'm not even sure about that.

There are only 3 main lines of pharaohs in the US. Out of them are probably 20-25 hobbyists that have bred, or are breeding still. So you're right on that count.

I think current numbers of PHs in the states is somewhere around 1500 or a few less. I don't know of any mid-west ones. The majority of PH owners own multiples, I'm one of the few hobbyists that has only one.

Besides lure coursing how do you satisfy his running requirements?
We used to dog park. No longer, the people and dogs changed to a more...well a less observant type of folk that does not believe in being proactive, they'd rather wait for a problem to develop and then deal with it half way.

Believe it or not, the majority of his running is done on a 25 foot flexi. We take some very long walks (3-6 miles) about 3 times a week. We go into the woods and hunt, and on the trails we walk. We'll usually get about a mile of jogging/running in as well.

The dogs don't really require that much running, per se, but they do require exercise and activity. The most important thing is to keep his mind occupied and challenged.

Thanks Xerxes, maybe an Ibizan isn't totally out of the question in the future.

btw, you seem like an excellent proponent and supporter of the breed. I hope you do start a breeding line in the future, the Pharaohs would be in good hands.

Very striking looking dog! I've met a couple of Pharoh's before, at the dog park no less. Although if I remember right, the people were just in town visiting some relatives, but they had awesome dogs! Smkie was out with me and poor Victor had never before met a dog that could outrun him so whimsically. Sawyer just kind of shrugged and said "Aw, forget it."

Let us know if you do find that proper bitch. Can I ask what you're meaning by "cobby"? I'm thinking of the word in horse terms and that's not really something you'd want to see in a Pharoh!

Cobby dogs/bitches are more short and squat. Cobby bitches are okay because they are a bit wider and bigger boned. This translates into a bitch that will probably whelp her own litter, as opposed to needing a C-section. Xerx' dam is a bit on the cobby side. She's powerful, and a bit squat but still retains her grace and elegance. She carried and whelped 5 pups.

Xerxes, IMO, is a bit long in the leg. And he's got a tad bit too much white on his feet for my liking. (Though I've seen finished pharaohs with white socks before....) He's also got a pretty severe tuck---which I find aesthetically pleasing, but it's not moderate-so it's not to the standard.

Thank you for those thoughts. One day I hope to be in a position where I can actually afford to breed. (Yeah, it takes money to breed....) Besides that, I need to make sure I can afford to keep or take back all of the get.

If you talk to Beezer people let me know who...I might be able to put you in touch with someone that could help you out.
