Around here a lot of dogs are disgustingly obese as well. Some people even tell me that my guys are underweight and I should feed them more! OC isn't super thin but he's at a good weight and has good muscling on him, Ronan on the other hand ou can feel every bone on him. he doesnt put on weight very easily regardless of how much I feed him but he has great muscle definition and lots of energy so I'm not worried.

My vet always tells me that the boys are like a breath of fresh air for her as she is so used to getting disgustingly fat dogs in. IMO obesity is just as cruel as emaciation

I hate this. Lilly was overweight at one point, and we worked hard to get her under control. The vet always comments on how nice she looks, especially since beagles tend to get very heavy as they age. Radar is a bit harder to figure out just from looking, because his natural shaped looks kind of like a Tootie Roll on tiny little legs.
To be fair, we had a cocker when I was younger who was fat as a cow. We inherited her and she was fat from being fed the wrong things. For five years we tried to slim her down, good diet, lots of walks and she never lost a pound. She went to her death weighing in at 40lbs. No thyroid issue, no nothing. The vet couldn't figure her out.

Pet people constantly tell me she and now smudge can't be a cocker they aren't 'big enough' around......
LOL I get that with my AM Staff ALL the time. He's too thin, he isn't "big" enough to be purebred.

This is him at 51lbs, and honestly he could STILL lose another 3- 4 lbs:

That's sad . . . I've seen lots of overweight dogs too. More overweight big dogs than small dogs. I was fortunate with my dog, we could freefeed her and she'd only eat as much as she was hungry for, so she stayed a steady 50 lbs all her life. (She was almost lab sized, but built much lighter than a lab.)

Same here, too.
I always worried about Maddie's weight. The vet says she's at a good weight, but sometimes I still wonder. Yes, she's much better than most cockers, but is she ideal?
Missy eats like a horse and always stays the same. Wish we were all that lucky :p

My one dog (family dog) Bear is a little overweight, nothing horrid and he is losing weight on a low cal diet and exercise.
My dog is a mini poodle and I have always tried to keep his weight perfect though last time I was in at the vets she told me he was half a pound over weight!!!! I was like NOOOOOO, so he went straight onto a good diet and I think he is now right back to his healthy weight of 10 pounds.
But yes, with grooming I seen some SEVERELY obese dogs!!! Shih tzu/bichon things that have short stubby legs that hardly reach the ground their bellies are so huge, they are wider than they are tall!
It's gross! The poor dogs. aah, I don't even know what else to say

My Grandparents have a sheltie. The thing is so fat is is actually grotesque. The best part? They don't think he is! Grandpa has actually told me that the dog weighs only 25lbs. No, Lilly weighs about 25lbs. Casey weighs 50 if he weighs 1. His poor little legs are bowed and he is just miserable in the FL heat. The dog gets no excerise, except a brief waddle around the yard a few times a day. As far as I know, he's never been on a leash in his life. The sad thing is they love him a lot, they just don't see reality.

I am obsessive about Tosca's weight. I check her weekly and adjust her food accordingly. There are few more horrible dog sights than a really fat Collie.

There are tons of overweight dogs everywhere. It's very rare that I see a dog at a healthy weight out in public.

I'm obsessive about my dogs' weights and try my best to ensure they don't go overweight.

Unfortunately, Winston needs to lose a few pounds but my Dad denies that he's overweight and keeps feeding him (if I cut back his food intake, my dad gives extra cookies).

most of the dogs i see around here are pretty good weight. the only ones i see that are really bad are the smaller dogs. around here most of the medium large dogs go out to the park or lake and swim and play around. any time i see the little ones they are being carried. i think that might be part of it. people not letting their dogs walk or play

I get so many compliments on how trim and fit my dogs are. I've been noticing a lot of fat dogs around too. It's crazy seeing a lot of them aren't lazy either. They just aren't given as much activity as they need.

Tosca's Mom, I totally agree!!! The only sadder sight than a really obese Collie, is a really obese Border Collie... HOMG!

One of my neighbors has the sweetest Border Collie, Puddles. He is 2 years older than Gonzo, his same height, and about double his weight! This dog is at least 80 lbs... his stomach nearly drags! What's worse, is that I know this family, and Puddles has been obese since he was an adolescent. He just looks so unhealthy, and I can tell it's taking a toll on his health. His owners have commented that he's a "senior" and he doesn't have "much time left". I expect Gonzo to live at LEAST 8+ more years... seeing them play together is so sad, because they're nearly the same age, but Puddles looks like my boy's grandpa!

Then again... most people say Gonzo looks anorexic, when he's really at a very healthy weight, and he would be fine if he lost a few pounds. He eats 2 lbs of raw a day!

Blue is an over weight ACD. It's depressing seeing as she's got more oomph then the border collies.

My sister's cocker is a bit fat, but it does have asthma which is barely controlled at rest, so it does not move around very much ;) Being a pig does not help matters either.

I wouldn't want Buster to loose more than a lb or two right now, but I can see him gaining a few pounds in muscle... hopefully. He does not carry much muscle mass which actually surprises me a bit.

Thats eating less than 1.5 cups of Canidae a day... I can't imagine a beagle eating 3x that!

Obesity in dogs scares me. But i really can't deal with having a fat dog, I love making sure buster is lean and muscley.
He gained a bit of weight this winter, but i'm not so worried as i'm hoping it was keeping him warm, plus his excercise dipped due to me not wanting to go out in the cold. Its really annoying me though, he's just a bit wider than he was but ERGH! get it off him now!

i've also taken on harry as my little "project" watching exactly what he eats. I'll take care of his food and mum can do his excercise. he's much too fat.

Not to brag....

BUT I think Chloe is one of the fittest dogs I have ever seen,
Not to blow smoke up yer butt, Jess, but I have to agree. I always enjoy looking at her.

Collies are hard, you have to be diligent, because they have all that fur and already look like they have more weight than they do, so you have to check them for how their weight is going to avoid them becoming a massive waddling ball of fur--or being too skinny underneath it all. Fat Collies can barely walk. It is very sad.

Teddy is at a healthy weight of 5.3 pounds. I am worried about him getting overweight because while I am living at my parents my mother is spoiling him.LOL.I decided I have to give him more exercise. I don't want to fight with my mom about spoiling him she is disabled and mostly confined to her bed so if it gives her comfort to have the dog up there and spoiling him so be it.

I don't see a lot of overweight dogs, but where we see most dogs are at activities where an overweight dog would not cut it. All the dogs at the working dog club are in prime shape due to their activity. There is one black GSD who could probably stand to lose a little weight, but he's got real thick fur and he's 6 yrs old, and he's real filled out, so it's harder to tell on him. Also at our agility class there aren't any overweight dogs. Even at the beginners classes that run before agility, there are not many overweight dogs since most are younger, 5 months to maybe 18 months is the usual age.

Where I did see overweight dogs was at Daisy's 1st OB class, there were 2 labs there that were just grotesque, the sausage on legs look. They were free fed, which is where I think a lot of the problem lies, when people just fill up a food bowl and leave it out for the dog to nibble all day and don't monitor how much they are actually eating. It's sad to see overweight labs, and it's too common. There are a couple in my neighborhood but they are fit because they are hunting dogs. One of the guys in my band has a lab who is also real fit but he's in tune with his diet.

People think Daisy is underweight because she's got such a tuck to her belly, but I think she's about perfect. You can see her ribs if she turns a certain way, but normally you can only see the last one. It's not like they are sticking out all over the place. Her waist is very trim, but her legs are fully muscled and hard as rock. I have to watch her closely though, since she's growing, she'll go thru stages of looking skinny, then she'll fill in again. Gunnar is at a good weight. I can feel his ribs under the skin and he's hard as a rock. Bruzer will fluctuate some, and he's hard to keep trim. He's overweight right now but he's very active and isn't being over fed, getting 8-12oz of raw per day. If I cut him back just a couple ounces per day over 2-3 weeks, he drops the weight off.

I just Sawyer all the time as well, because his fur makes him look bigger than he really is. It's much easier to see how fit he is when he gets out of the pool or in the tub.
