1 br apartment at $1600? SNAP! You might as well buy a place of your own and pay a mortgage. That's about average in the city, but luckily, I don't want or need to live around Toronto.
Yeah, that's even more than my better-off-financially friends are paying to live in Manhattan!

I should review that "What do you do for a living?" thread. ;)
I know you were just giving an example, but $1600/month for a 1 bedroom is crazy a bit crazy. I currently live in a semi-detach and pay $1000 (rent) for 3 + 1 bedrooms. :O

In a city it's not that crazy. While most of the people I know (very young professionals) pay about $1200 for an average 1 bedroom in an average neighborhood, I could definitely see a bigger place in a really nice area going for that much.

In the NOVA area, 2br apartments in the ghetto cost 1600/month. :rofl1:
As crazy as it is, that's true. We rented a 2 br apartment for $1700/month (away from public transportation, so it was cheaper), and our car was broken into twice (GPS stolen, windows smashed, etc). Sad, but realistic here. The downside of living in a place where the job market stayed strong, I guess! The real estate market never dropped here.

I hope the place you're looking into works out for you!!!

I guess I'm also think of splitting places in NYC. So paying $1200 for a 2 bedroom, but having a roommate also paying $1200. Guys, let's all move to Toronto, lol.

Well that is NOT a price in toronto. The OP mentioned it was an hour and half out of TO. (lol so could be near me)

One of my best friends lives down town TO. Her apt is tiny tiny. I mean there is no kitchen really, and you can see all parts of it when you open the door. There is a little balcony, but you have to climb over the futon to get to it Its a steal at 1200 a month.

Totally true! Skittledoo (on chaz) can tell people about that. The place she rented for a while, with roommates, cost right around 1400-1600 a month and was a two bedroom. It was so far in the bad part of the ghetto that you could not go outside at night without Bamm or a really big, scary guy. And we had a shortage of the latter, so we brought Bamm. :rofl1:

If I'd had a car at that point I would not have parked it there. Hers never got broken into, but loads of them did.

I think average prices are a lot different than "what you can find", too, though. I live in what is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the world, in a fairly decent sized apartment, for less than the price you all are quoting. Only problem is I can't afford to shop here or eat here :p A friend of mine just moved into the tiniest apartment I've ever seen in a run-down building for more than I'm paying....that's considered "average", but you could definitely find something cheaper, and nicer, if you take the time to look.

I have friends who live in Chevy Chase and Georgetown in DC, and pay less than $1000 for a studio or have roommates in a 2 bedroom for around $2000. They're not totally sketchy, TEENY apartments either. They're just regular apartments in pretty nice areas of metro DC.

Yeah, 2 bedroom places are much more affordable than 1 br places. The complexes bank on people having roommates. Much like NYC, it's very common to live with roommates until you're 30+ here (or you get married and have a built in roommate). For example, the complexes that were quoting me $1800 for a 1 br place are only $2100 for a 2 bedroom, so pick up a roommate and the rent drops significantly. The problem is, you can't get 2 parking spaces for a single apartment, so you're in trouble there if you need cars to get to work. (And you'll pay an extra $75/month for the one parking space you are allowed to have).

If you don't need public transportation and don't mind living in a tiny, outdated building, you can find a 1 br apartment within a 30-40 minute drive of down town for around $1100. Likely you won't be allowed pets, have laundry in the apartment, or be able to walk to anything, but it won't be a "fear for life" situation either. Anything less than $1000, and I would be seriously, seriously questioning what was wrong with the building/area.

Luckily here in Washington, we have this "wonderful" ghetto place called Everett with decent houses & apartments for rent for $600 that even allow pit bulls. I've been looking online for places that allow pit bulls just to try to plan for the future, called at least 10 that all said NO to pit bulls and finally found 1 that said yes with a big pet deposit. I'm worried about finding a place to rent out near whatever college I go to that will allow me to have a pit bull! Don't think I could live without one ;)

So you are already having trouble finding somewhere to move in a location you like, in your price range that will take dogs. While not huge, the two dogs you own are on the larger side, and you will now add a puppy this week to the mix.. While they cannot refuse to rent to you in Ontario, three large dogs ups the stakes and what they may end up claim if they end up unhappy if you have to lie to move in with them.

My dogs are 12 and 30 lbs, they are far from large. I've already found a place, and it's only temporary; I will be moving to my own home at the end of June (which we've already bought, just waiting for hubby's parents to move out).

You'd be hard pushed to find a landlord here willingly allowing animals... however, a lot of people get them anyway.

Mostly everyone renting with pets goes through the whining "I have to look for a no pets place" rant. Because it's inconvinent. We do it because we love our dogs, but it doesn't make it fun. The OP isn't saying they're about to get evicted, that they need to move in three weeks or their dogs will be rehomed, or anything that implies they're being irresponsible. Why make a comment like this?

Not MP but I thought this too. Because you CAN'T not be rented too with pets in Ontario. And they never said that they were buying a place so if you need to keep renting but want to be upfront all the time an extra dog is a big deal. Esp when you don't seem to want to research the landlord and tenant act.
