Microchip is gone lost in a dog's body?

Is that even possible?

no microchip reader is successful at locating and reading Snowy's chip

He was microchiped when he was 3 months old. The chip's location "was" in his neck area. Three years ago, the chip started moving away from that area, started heading south, on his sides, little by little. From time to time, as we re-checked on the chip for different reasons, we noticed that each time, it was a slight new place. Always was difficult to locate the chip. After passing the microchip reader around his body 3-4 times, we were able to locate and read the chip (in its slight new place). Now though, 10-15 tries with different microchip readers did not succeed at locating or reading the chip it is like it disappeared if that's possible. But for sure where in his body did the chip go. Passing the reader on every single part of Snowy carefully and quite the many times will make one wonder "where on earth is the chip"

I was advised to microchip Snowy again (after 7 years from being chipped for the first time @3 months old).

I am taking Snowy to get microchiped tomorrow since the old one is found no where in his body.

Did anyone had something similar happen to their dogs? No sign for the old chip? Or getting a second chip in?

An xray will show a chip. If you really want to know, get an xray and see if you can find it. Snowy's not that big so you could probably get most of him on a big film.

Chips CAN move. I've seen dogs with them in their leg before. They can also just stop working/break. I've never seen one completely disappear though.

It's likely still there. Possibly in a hard to scan area.

Cider's not chipped, Smudge is. I can't say if Smudge's went missing I'd jump on re-chipping him.

I did some research on this because we believe that Mackenzy's microchip may have migrated. I can't remember where the article was, but there's basically some evidence that implanting a microchip before the dog is full grown significantly increases the odds it will migrate. Makes sense when you think about it.

Keeva will be microchipped, but not until 12 months or so, for that very reason.

Thank you for the info. Makes me feel better. I will have an x ray done for him before implanting another one..

I so don't want to chip him again, but I have no choice because we are traveling soon and he is coming along. Microchipping is an International requirement for all dogs.

It makes sense as I think about it. My next dog will sure not be chipped until he's over a year old. when my parents got me Snowy, he was already chipped.

So weird! Never heard of it.

Jackson was chipped while neutered, so around 7 months old, and he was basically full grown at that point, so hopefully I don't have to worry too much.

Last time it was checked though was sometime last year at a dog event where they were doing those free nail trims/free microchip scans, LOL. And it came up!

I guess it would be wise to check it every so often.

Backups microchip migrated to his armpit.

Are you sure the chip ever went in? Like was the dog scanned after implant? Sloan was chipped by my boss but we couldn't find it. I later found a chip in our office out of the package, etc. I seriously wonder if she oopsed and never got the chip in Sloan properly.

We rechipped Sloan and and discussed rechipping B in a more noticeable place as well.

What kind of microchips were used?

All four of mine have HomeAgain and none have moved at all. We only use HomeAgain at work, too.

"We have a dog here matching your missing dog's description, but he doesn't seem to have a microchip"

"Try his armpit"

:lol-sign: That would be awesome.

OR you could just say "Does he look like a lemur?" And then you'd know.

Definitely hear about it all the time. They do migrate and I would probably just chip again instead of exposing the dog to an x-ray and possibly needing to sedate them for the x-ray.

I've heard of them migrating. I'm sure Snowy's is still in there somewhere lol, just hiding! I actually would re-do the chip though if it's in a hard to locate area.... it's kind of pointless to have a microchip if no one is able to find it. If you're actually worried about losing him, that is--my dogs aren't known for running off so I don't really worry that they don't have microchips.

But since neither of my dogs have chips, I have no personal experience. Juno was supposed to be chipped when she got spayed, but I kind of spaced out and forgot to actually mention that when I dropped her off lol.

You shouldn't have to sedate for this sort of xray. I mean if it came down to it, I personaly would say screw it and not worry. It's not worth sedating over. The only time we really sedate for xrays is for OFA and occasionally torn cruciates when it's questionable.

Ozzy was microchipped when he was neutered. It W's initially in between his shoulders but the last time we checked it it had migrated to his left shoulder blade area. Enzo was also microchipped, but we haven't scanned her in a long time.

All of mine are chipped and they haven't budged as of last June. My sister's dog has a really odd chip. You can feel the darn thing right on top of the shoulder and even wiggle it. It's one of those ones where I know one day it's just going to reject or take a walk somewhere else in the body.

That said I have heard of one chip rejecting out of a dog. As in a cyst formed around it and it was expelled from the body. Dog was a pit at an animal shelter and we probably had 100 dogs/cats chipped a week at that gig. Not one other that we knew of ever had that happen.

I've heard of chips moving around, as part of my dog's annual vet visit, I ask that they scan for the chip. It's probably easiest just to get another one for Snowy.

I've heard of them moving around (Jack's is in his armpit/front leg area), but never completely disappearing! Like others have said, it's probably in there somewhere, you just might not be able to feel it.

Argon's chip is headed down his left leg. I think the general lack of body fat on him makes it hard for the chip to stay in place.

Angry Puss rejected a chip. I didn't even know he had it (shelter did not chip at the time), and was sure he had suddenly developed a tumor. Nope, the vet removed the lump and found the chip. I didn't bother having him redone.

Thanks guys for your thoughts & input. Well, I got him chipped again and skipped the x ray to try and locate the other one for now.

Are you sure the chip ever went in? Like was the dog scanned after implant?.
Yes. Many times he was scanned - up until August 2010 , we were able scan it (in a slight new place). Not now though.

What kind of microchips were used?
It was ISONORM

The new one is ISO
