I'm not married, so I can't comment on whether or not it has happened to me, but I do know I think it would be very sweet and romantic for the potential fiance to ask my parents for their blessing before hand. If he didn't, though, I wouldn't mind. Surprising them with the news would be just as fun. :)

My future BIL asked my dad like, 5 times. My dad is, difficult to say the least. Even though I'm not close at all with my dad, I think I'd still think it was cute if he asked my dad for a blessing. I guess we are pretty traditional as a family.

I wouldn't *mind* if my future spouse asked my parents (particularly my dad) for their/his blessing to ask me. But honestly it wouldn't be different if he asked my grandma, my best friend, or a number of other people for their blessing...it might mean more to me if he asked those people. I just don't have that relationship with my parents...

It's moot now since I'm married (and my husband didn't ask), but I personally wouldn't like it at all -- blessing, permission, whatever. I should be the first to know that I'm engaged, for crying out loud! Parents can give their blessing when we share our engagement with them as far as I'm concerned.

But at the same time, I don't think it's super weird or wrong for anyone else.

It wouldn't be a deal breaker, but I think it would be pretty romantic if you ask me. I'd love if a future boyfriend of mine first asked my dad, as I am very close to my dad anyways, so yeah it'd be pretty neat. I am not what I consider "old fashioned" per say but certain culture traditions I really do love.
