Reggin, I use to get those kinds of comments when I walked my Doberman with the Chihuahuas. When together, they produced lots of comments.

I lucked out I guess with my Chi's byb. They both have wonderful, sweet, stable temperaments. Jose` ended up with whacked out knees (Chulita's are perfect) but other than that, they haven't had any health problems so far (they're 6 and 8 yrs old) and they have personalities to die for.

Pebbles is not pure bred. She is half min pin... just to throw that out there. My last chihuahua was also from a byb and he was pure bred. He had a much better temperament than her, but he did tell people to back off when he didnt want petted, which happened when I was holding him sometimes . He was never a shivering anxiety mess like Pebbles is a lot of times. He had confidence and he loved affection from other people. I miss him very much. My ex didn't want to give him up when we split a few years ago.

For now on out, I will be meeting the parents of any future Chihuahua puppies I get (or any dog for that matter). I'd rather not get my hands on another dog who has temperamental problems. And its not just chihuahuas... reggin has his own issues as well. There was one time I got lucky with a byb bred dog who had a rock solid temperament (NO ISSUES), and that was with a rottie I had years ago.

OMG! Reggin! Don't do that to me!!! You are giving me a severe case of Chipupitis. And I AM AT MY LIMIT. NO MORE DOGS NOW. NO MORE DOGS NOW!

Truffles is so adorable, I can't stand it.

btw...Jose` isn't a purebred either. He was suppose to be. But he just couldn't be. The byb said he was a "throw-back." ROFLOL! But now, I wouldn't trade him for the world.

Just look at him. He weighs 13 LBS aprox.

Well, whatever he is... it looks like he is full of spunk!!!

I have a chihuahua addiction. I just had to go get myself another one. One that is actually pure bred again.... I miss the boy I used to have. Sweetest little things.

Oh Reggin he is just too cute!

I have to admit, you Chi and Pap people are weakening my antipathy towards owning a small dog. I met the *coolest* LH Chi a few years ago (from a petstore, surprisingly) and would really like to have one of them someday.

Reggin, just wondering - how/in what ways did he express his displeasure when you were holding him and others wanted to pet him? Did any type of training/correction you attempted work or make the issue any better?

Jose` did that once a long time ago. I was already holding him and some little girl kept reaching up and not only patting him, but getting a bit pushy about it. He'd lean away and she'd keep coming at him. He gave a little lip curl and mini snarl. He wasn't that use to kids at that time (he is more so now) and was uncomfortable. What I did was turned away and asked the child to leave him alone. I would never correct a dog for communicating that he was uncomfortable. What I did was from then on, tried to get him around more kids but kids that would just sit and let him come to them on his terms...no obtrusive stuff allowed from the kids. And they were given treats to give to him. He's much, much more tolerant now and in fact enjoys the company of most kids.

Well, he didnt do it too often, but every once in awhile he would give a little growl when some stranger would suddenly reach over to pet his head. It made him uneasy when people would reach over to him... people he did not know, when we were out and about. He liked to have his own space. But in our home, he would welcome people with very enthusiastic licks to the face. I got him when he was 6 months old and when I first picked him up in my arms, he gave me a growl, but he soon got used to me. Even after growling at me, I still took him home with me. He got used to the family very quickly. Something tells me that it was a lack of socialization that made him that way... before he was even mine.

I love the long hairs. My next one will be a long hair. They are little balls of fluff when they are puppies. lol.

longhaireds are my faves obviously.

chis tend to be protective, even the best socilized chi can have "issues" when being held by their person and a stranger gets too close, they 100% belive they weight 400lbs and its their job to protect you with their lives.

chis have such a bad rap and its such a shame because when well socilized (and hopefully well bred) they have such awesome personalities.
i love my monkies no matter how much bad people have to say about them...
and in truth, my little devils have turned many a chihuahua hater into a worshiper of the wowie!

your little guy is a real cutie, hes in that my heads to big for my body phase lol, i LOVE that phase, they are tooo cute!

I love the long haireds - I have one!

Interesting you bring that latter point up.
My Chi gets snarly whenever I'm holding her and my boyfriend's mom comes up next to me and holds out her hands, wanting to take her from my arms. Do you guys consider this to be a normal way of communicating her being uncomfortable/disliking the idea of being picked up and held by someone else and thus OK, or is this considered somewhat aggression and NOT OK?
