I just pick the cutest names I come up with or have heard before. Not much of a story there. Skittles and pebbles I think is really super cute. Small dogs are especially fun to name, because I can come up with the cutest names ever.

Oh yeah, pebbles was actually named after Cocoa Pebbles, the cereal. Since she is chocolate. The name "cocoa" is just too popular of a name for me.

So there, I've got one story. LOL.

I named my Senegal Parrot Cyrus after Sirius Black in Harry Potter as he was my favourite character from the series. However I always pronouced the name Cy rus so I decided to use that spelling for her.

Duke has always been my favourite name for a bigger shephard type dog- not very original I know, I also liked Dreen, but Duke seemed more fitting for him.

My carpet Python is named Kaipo as it stands for "sweetheart" in a native langauge.

Other names of pets Ive had over the years include

Starburst
Bob
Nicky
Craxy
Molly

Most just seemed to suit the animal so they stuck

The D.O.G. came to me with The Stupidest Name Ever (Midnight) and everyone knew him as that already.. so I couldn't change it. Well, I could, but I couldn't think of anything good enough for him and I didn't want to upset or confuse anyone. By that time I had already been calling him Middie, so unless I'm pissed off at him, I never call him Midnight. That suits me fine. I don't actually like the name 'Middie' a lot... but it fits him so well.

Emma got her name at maybe a week or two old the day I met her, in her litter with a bunch of other blind little kittens squirming around my knees. I picked her up and just knew she was a girl and her name was Emma, and that she was mine. It's the kind of knowledge that comes out of nowhere; that's not a conscious decision or thought. Fred (RIP) got his name the same way... when I was talking to my mother about him I referred to him as Fred, and we both knew exactly who I was talking about and agreed the name was right - it wasn't a decision I had made and I hadn't even thought of a name for him before then.

Chili was hard to name. It took weeks. We finally agreed on Chili Pepper because she's such a spicy little cat.

Tom was named after a favorite character in a book... Joe Grey. I don't like the name Joe, so it got switched to Tom, and he's Tom Grey.

I named Gonzo... when I was 13. LOL! I saw this goofy, weird, skinny little guy with a huge roman nose, and I thought it suited him perfectly. I loved the Muppets/Muppet Babies as a kid (and still do, secretly). I regretted it a few months later, because a lot of people made fun of the name, and I toyed with re-naming him. But he responded best to Gonzo, and there isn't a more fitting name. :)

Fozzie was going to be Gilligan. I always wanted to name a red & white male BC Fozzie. I was about to get a female Cardigan Welsh Corgi, so all I had been thinking about was girl names, up until the breeder decided to keep her... and I found Fozz the next day, so I only had a few days to think about what to name him. I didn't want to name him Fozzie at first. I tried really HARD not to follow a cheezy Muppets theme. I had decided to name him Gilligan, but when I met him, and saw how sweet and cuddly and silly he was, I knew he was a Fozz. And the next day I decided to just give in to the theme. Sometimes I do think of funny names that I could've given him, but he is very much like his namesake.

Interesting reading on this thread..
"Hottie" was originally Infared meaning hot. Having teens in the house, went to 'hot dog' to 'Hottie".
Zubin - I am a musical and love opera as well. He is named for the last sung when I was in college with Zubin Metha as the conductor. ( I swear he is just as flamboyant.. lol. )
"Femkas' " original name meant princess. We changed it slighly making it as her registered name in the Netherlands of Fantasia. ( however we call her 'precious' half the time..)
"Galina' was named for a Russian prima Ballerina.. ( again- self fullfilling prophecy and she loved to dance around on her back legs.. lol. And a prima dona to boot..)

My husband and son named Caleb (registered as Our Little Caleb Takoda. Caleb's name actually came from his geneology research. Caleb Washburn was my husband's 4th great grandfather. "Our Little" is curtesy of our son. Hubby also named the cat. She's a classic tuxedo, so he named her Topper after the tv show from when he was a kid. He also named the two dogs we had previous to Caleb- Heineken (Sibe/GSD) and Michelob aka Mick (Lab/Eng Setter). Any fish that get named have had NASCAR related names, and my rats were named after a bullrider and his bullfighter brother.

Dogs:
Thunder - He was Corbin when I got him, and I changed it to Caleb... but after a few days of trying the name Caleb it just wasn't him. So I made a list of names, and tried them all out.. and Thunder it was!
Penny - She came with the name Tippy, but I hated that name. Penny was just the first name that came to mind when I saw her.
Scooter - John named him, we got him right before we went on a long road trip to pick up an old Vespa Scooter.
Juno - John named her after the movie.
Emmy - Since I was a little girl I always said that if I had a daughter I'd name her Emily... so that's what I named her, but it soon got shortened to Emmy and I haven't called her Emily since.

Cats:
Leo - First name that came to mind.
Spooky Bear - He was 4 weeks old when I found him and he hissed at everything, plus it was close to Halloween, so Spooky was perfect. I added the Bear because he looked like a little bear.
Woodward - Technically he's Woody Jr., named after my "heart cat" that passed away a few years ago.
Grover - I just looked at him and the name popped into my head immediately. It fits him perfectly.
Peanut - John named him that because he was so small.
Wyatt - I wanted another "W" name since he's Woodward's shorthaired twin. Wyatt was the only name I liked.
Grabat - John's dad's cat that lives with John and I. When she was tiny she was an outside cat and she used to run in when the door was opened. John's dad would say "Grab 'at cat!", which eventually was shortened to "Grabat cat", and then just "Grabat".

Horses:
Sienna - She came with the name Cheyenne, which I used for awhile. Then I asked an animal communicator to speak with her, and she told me that her name was really Sienna not Cheyenne. She responds to Sienna so much better and it fits her.
Ike - John named him that because I got him the day before the remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through here.

Morgan is named after Morgan Freeman, but there is a bit more story to it... When we brought him home as an itty-bitty 10-week old puppy back in February, there was still snow on the ground. We would take him outside for his potty training, and after he was done he would come sit on our feet like a baby penguin does. So we wanted to give him a penguin name. The only penguin movies we could think of was "March of the Penguins" and "Happy Feet"... we didn't like any of the "Happy Feet" names, and so he was named after the narrator of "March of the Penguins". :p

My husband and I picked out the kitties names, Whitacre and Ticheli, LOOOONG before we ever even met them. They are the last names of our favorite two concert band composers, Frank Ticheli and Eric Whitacre. I think were were trying to name a pair of girl rats at the time, and decided that those would be AWESOME names for a pair of boy cats... and so they are.

Novinha (rat) is named after a character in the Ender's Game series... She's in the last three books. She doesn't really match the character's attitude at all (hence why we usually just shorten it to "Novi"), but it goes along with a theme that I've had with my girl-rats for years now. RIP Poke, Petra, Valentine, Virlomi ('Lomi), Ela, and Quara.

Teller (and his brother Penn, RIP) was named after, um, well, Penn and Teller. We had just been watching their TV show a lot at the time that we got them, and we figured that naming sugar gliders after illusionist comedians seemed appropriate.

Elphaba and Fiyero are named after characters in Wicked. Again, we had just seen the show when we got them, and well, they can Defy Gravity! :D

Oh, and we also have a middle name convention for all the pets, too. Basically, whatever their previous name was (like at the shelter, or in Novi's case, from Craigslist) becomes their middle name.

So from the shelter, we have:
Morgan Rocky
Ticheli Smokey
Whitacre Crumpet

From CL, we have:
Novinha Jingles

And the sugar gliders don't have middle names because we got them directly from a breeder when they were joeys. :)

One strategy is we throw names around until we hit one that makes us laugh uncontrollably for at least 5 minutes. This method works best while reeeaally sleep deprived. :D

The Wooden Spoon-rabbit, was named after the wooden spoon that Rumplestiltskin flew around on.

Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.- cat. Yeah....lol. The vet techs can never stop laughing when we bring her in.

Levar Burton- cat. because Levar Burton is awesome. It was either that or Kunta Kinte.

Robert used to have a cat named Slobodon Milosevic. Eerily enough, that cat died the same week the human Milosevic died. *spooky music*

For snakes we have Schwinn (she's silver), Rosella, Mercy, Jimmy, and Circe.

And Strider, we just kind of tried every name possible, and that was the only one that stuck. It's fits him though. A lot of people think he's named after Aragorn, which he isn't but that's cool.

I've always been a bit untraditional when it comes to pet names:

Voodoo--That's what he responded to. And unfortunately, he lived up to it.

Zeus---Our previous dog was Odin, so Zeus sounded like a good name.

Killer---My bunny. Named after the infamous Monty Python wabbit.

Oh, gosh,I totally forgot the rabbit! Once again, my husband came up with a great name- Shaker (be cause he shook in the crate all the way home from the breeders). His markings make him look like he's been playing paintball, so I was leaning towards "Splat".
I got my other Mini-Rex from my mother. His tattoo number was PT11, so Mom named him Barnum.

Doom's we threw around for a looooooong time. We had him three weeks before he was anything other than THE PUPPY. I was reading LOTR at the time, and I was like, "We should name him after something in this book," at which time I suggested we name him Tolkein, and Aaron told me that it was "fail" lol. So then I was like, "What was the bridge called? The one in Moria that Gandalf fought the Balrog on?"
"Khazad Dum?"
"Yeah, that's the one."
"Too long. What about jus Dum?" (Dum is pronounced Doom, and therefore we ended up with Doom!) LoL

Bobsie was already named when we got her. I just tweaked it a little bit because it sounded to male-ish. It WAS Bobbie.
Pixel (the Chinchilla) was Ares until we figured out that he was a she was a he, and Aaron was like "What about Pixie?"
I said "She's too moody to be a pixie. Pixel would be better." (I was joking but he liked it. WIN. LoL! I NEVER get to name animals!!!)

Boo? No reason really, I guess. It had to be a 'B' name - all of our dogs have been 'B's (Belle, Buford, Buddy) , but from there we just picked. Boo sounded cute, easy to say, and easy to make lots of nicknames from. Her real name is Boo Boo Bear, though everyone else in the family insists that it's just 'Boo'. Her name at the shelter was "Lucy Lu" and of course we knew THAT wasn't going to stay.

Misty (the cat) is also a no reason name. She's gray. That's about it.

The mice (who unfortunately have passed on) were Mozzerella, Muenster, Macey, Marley, and Mo. The first two were cheese, and then I ran out of cheese names that began with M so I found some different names. :D

LMAO! We named a kitten at FOHA Shaker a few weeks ago because we had to shake him out of the crate he came in!
