How did you come up with the name for your animal(s)?

For me, my girlfriend named our black cat (morticia), she had her before I knew her. Our russian blue cat, I named Rat-fink because it was the first name that popped into my mind. As for Argo's, we all helped name him. We wrote down all the names of the greek gods/dieties/demi-gods on pieces of paper and put them in a big bowl. We let him pick 3 names (by pick, I mean we layed him in front of a pile of the papers and which ever ones stuck to his lips were his choice), then we let the cats pick 3 names each (which ever ones they picked out of the pile to play with) then my girlfriend and I both picked 3 names and narrowed it down from that group of 15 names.

We just use try names until they fit.

Buster took us a while to name, we tried so many things, Spike (he's too much of a girl) Frog, because of the way his back legs go when he runs.
But he really is just a Buster if ever I've seen one.

Mac my sister named, they named her at McDonalds.

Harry took us ages to name, he could have been an Arthur except mum said it was too close to Martha, her heart dogs name.
So now he is dubbed Harrison Stanley lol, and it suits him down to the ground.

Sophie is definetley a Sophie, we tried a few others names on her that my brother hated but he said Sophie was okay.

Elliot is kinda a long story. Back when my brother lived with us, aroudn the time we got Sophie, we got another cat. A black and white, Siamese mix. Elliot would have been the perfect name for him, but my brother didn't like it so we called him Billy, which also worked.
So the day we picked up Elliot, we thought that should be the name for our Siamese boy. He was called Cobalt at the shelter but it so does not suit him.
Funny thing is he answered to Elliot from the first time we called him and has always come running to his name.

My fisah I like to name after other people.

My black moore is Luther after Martin Luther King Jr.
My 2 fantails are Demetri after Demetri Martin and Hoppus after Mark Hoppus.

I am just beyond bad at naming animals.

My dog Luna had that name when I got her. The girl who gave her to me had another dog named Star, so I think it was a theme (plus she's a chihuahua so I like the Spanish names for the Mexican dogs!).

My cat? Her official name is Nadia because that's a name that my friend came up with. It's kind of an exotic name for an exotic looking cat. She's not named after the gymnist or anything creative like that. I don't think I have ever called her Nadia, though, I call her Cat or Kitty.

My rats? I actually named the first two, Beatrice and Gertrude (long story that's really not very interesting). Then I got a hairless rat, who was known as "the hairless," and when her roommate died and I got another rat, it was just "the other" - so I had the hairless rat and the other rat.

Terrible, huh? It's kind of a running joke among people who know me.

I named Kona "Kona" because I didn't want an every day brown dog name. Hershey, Brownie... none of it fit. Did an internet search for "Coffee" (since she is a coffee color!), and found "Kona". IT fit, it stuck, and that was that.

I've since decided that since I'm in love with beaches, and Hawaii is my dream home, all my dogs will be named after a Hawaiian island... like Kona (aka the Big Island).

Ilsa was named after an Indiana Jones character - svelte, sexy, wily... and well... evil.

Ronin was going to be "Roman", since I got him on the 4th of July (roman candle). But at the time, I was raising a dog named Rumor, and I thought Roman and Rumor were too similar. So it got slightly altered to "Ronin".

Ada was a "recycled" name. I raised a Doberman puppy named Ada Wong, who was originally named by my fiance after a video game character. When Ada Wong went on to her show home she was re-named Ivy... then our little corgi puppy came along, and nothing fit her as well as "Ada" did.

Sekai means "laughter". When I got him, I really needed something extra in my life to make me laugh, and my liddle python fit the bill! :)

Noodle was so named because my husband likes food.

Allie just looked like an Allie :)

And Ruby was named at the shelter. We couldn't think of a name to fit her better, so she stayed Ruby.

Calico cat is named Pita, because she is a Pain In The A*s.

Black/gray striped cat with white feet and bib is named Toona, because of the food thing again, and we lived in Altoona when we adopted her.

Milo is named after the Venus De Milo statue,
Aidan is named after a little boy who was my hospital roommate after my suicide attempt
Adonis just fit, when I found out she was a girl I tried to change it to Artemis but it wouldn't stick.
Simba is named after the Lion King character
Sapphira is named because of her color.

Frodo was named because I'm a LOTR junkie.
Izzy was named by my sister after the character of Isabel Stevens on Grey's Anatomy. I never should have let her.

None of my dogs have any interesting stories behind their names honestly.

Malakai- I've always loved the name. And it fit him perfectly.

Chloe- again, it just fit her well. I think we tossed back and forth between Zoe and Chloe for a while.

Freckles- I did not name her. If it was up to me she wouldn't have had such a generic name  But she came to me with enough issues for me to worry about changing it.

Sierra came with her name. Since I'd dreamt about a dog named Sierra a week before I met her, it seemed inappropriate to change it. I have a feeling when we have kids it'll get changed to Sara (we'll probalby just drop the "i" and spell it Serra) because no children I've had Sierra around could properly pronounce her name.

Nya I named. She needed something feminine, delicate, beautiful. I threw around a lot of ideas, and Nya just came to me. It fit perfectly and stuck! (MUCH better than "Button" which is what *cough*someone*cough* suggested).

Buddy is unfortunately named and I regret letting Matt have his way all the time. I wanted to name him Bean. Or Mugatu. Matt wanted Buddy because "he's my Buddy!" *eye roll* He was supposed to be a foster anyways, so I gave in and let Matt name him. He stuck around, and of course, so did his stupid name :)

My buddy's name came from TV dog character, Wishbone. My friend's JRT was also from TV character, Lord Cedric...

Uncle Fred is named after my husband's late uncle, who he apparently resembles. No offense to Uncle Fred, the human, UF is a handsome boy and a great dog.

Minifred, aka Mini should be pretty obvious.

We also have the four cats. Bug was named by my Deaf daughter for reasons known only to her. Suvichka means owlet in Czech and she resembles one. Smedislav is a fake generic Czech name invented by my husband. And Tesla is named after Nikola Tesla, famous scientist and inventor, credited with inventing radio.

Dance got her name because I'd loved the name for a while, it's not something I'll hear very often (if ever), and because I wanted something that would go well with Tango at the time.

My mom chose Keira's name. She wanted something pretty and elegant, and liked the way Keira sounded. That, and I liked Keira better than the other two she came up with.

Winston came with his name. Nobody likes it, but it suits him and he was 7 when we got him, so we figured we might as well keep it.

Spring came with her name as well. I'm not overly fond of it, and it took a bit of getting used to, but I didn't want to upset her breeder by changing it and she knows it really well anyway. I would've named her "Chili" if I had decided/got permission to change it... she just looks like a spicy sort of dog, and it's one of my favourite names. Oh well though - Spring it is!

I got Thomas a month or so after moving to Virginia, so I needed a good Virginian name for a good Virginian dog. He's named for Thomas Jefferson.

My childhood dog was a mutt that came to our door as a stray puppy. We first named him Black Bear, because he was fuzzy and all black, but he quickly became Blackberry because he was the gentlest, sweetest dog, no bear at all.

Lucy came with her name at the shelter. She'd had enough change in her life (3 homes in 3 years) that we figured we should minimize any unnecessary changes. Also, one less thing for hubby and me to disagree on! Who knew there were so many Lucy's though? Everytime we go to the park, we meet one!

All my other animals growing up came named (every animal I've ever had came from the shelter).

Rabbits: Oliver, Contessa, Cooper, Tessa, Truffles
Guinea Pigs: S'more, Butterscotch, Squeaky, Pete, Itchy, Christopher

The only animal I ever bought is my hamster...we named him Mohawk because he has a stripe down his back.

Tia, my mom named her really....she thought she was the color of Tia Maria.

Tinker, well she's the smallest little dog I'd ever seen and it was a toss up between Tinker (Tinker bell) and Crumb...

Sophie, I named her as soon as I picked her from her litter. Sophie means wisdom...and it really, really fits.

Amos, he came with that name and while I normally change a dogs name as soon as they come from a bad environment, it suited him. It was also kind of a tribute to his little brother who I was too late to get...his name was Andy.:(

And little Lola (Loleeeee when we're feelin silly), I took one look at her and it just seemed to suit her. Lola didn't have a name at all until she was 2 years old. Known only as Brussels female by her puppy pimps...or money maker.
