Hi. Does anyone have anytips on how to potty train a very stubbern two year old boy?

My son Jory is scared of the toilet. I've been able to get him to go in it a few times. Now he just screams and runs into another room if you say anything involing the toilet. He getting to big for his diapers and I'm getting a little desprate. plus he takes off his diaper instead of telling us he needs to be changed. We've tried every thing we could think of. Games, stories, bribes nothing works. The only thing that kind of worked was Elmo's potty time movie but that only worked twice. I think that only worked because his potty chair looked just like Elmo's. Please help if you can.

when my brother was younger my parents had to bribe him. like little bribes wouldn't work. they had to use the ONE thing he couldn't turn down at the time. i can't remember what it was but i remember they were talking abouti t and laughing. lol. anyway they had to change it every week because what he liked changed that much that fast. but it eventually worked for them

That bribing thing could work. I wasn't potty trained till I was 4, and my mom had to bribe me with a cabbage patch doll.

Edit: Do you know WHY he's afraid of it? Maybe you could try explaining to him that the potty isnt' scary. Something that might also work would be to have somebody outside the family (like a friend or something) that he REALLY likes talk to him about how big boys use the potty. Sometimes kids will listen to famliy friends better than family ;)

OMG! WOW you have a two year old that already talks and stuff? I have a 21 month old and all he can say is "Mom" "bopbop"(what he calls his grandpa) "Go" and "Ink"(drink)
Plus, he wont even sit on his potty chair, he just plays with it (it sings and talks)

Sorry back to the topic, I honestly have no advice for you though, sorry.

we're going through the same thing with my 3 and a 1/2 year old daughter. We've been trying to potty train her since she was 18 months old. She doesn't tell us she has to go she'll just go and then take her diaper off somewhere.

What we have started doing with her is just having her run around with no diaper or underwear on. Going in the diaper or underwear is just sort of like a personal preference to her but she HATES when she pees and it gets on her! If she starts going when she's not on the potty we will interrupt her and say "Emily do you need to go potty" and usually she'll be able to stop and run to the potty to finish.

We have had her without diapers or underwear for two weeks now and just finally put underwear on her today. She still doesn't understand she's suppose to poop on the potty but now she will actually go potty on the big potty without anyone having to tell her she will get up and go all by herself.

Does he even seem interested in the potty at all, like if you go to the bathroom does he seem interested in what your doing? I know our daughter was because if she had no diaper or underwear on and she really had to go she would get really anxious and try to get us to put her diaper or her underwear on so she could pee. So she could hold it and she was quite aware of what it felt like when she had to pee.

Good luck with your son!

Mayasmydobe my son is almost a year and a half and he JUST started talking. He says hi, cookie, uh oh. It's not really good yet and you'd have to be his parent to understand what he was saying probably.

He's still pretty young. If he isn't interested, put diapers back on him and wait a month or two. Then build him up for a week, and tell him that diapers are for babies and you are getting rid of all the diapers on Monday (or whatever). Then follow through. Just put big-boy underwear on him, and that's that. If there are no diapers to put on him, he can't have them, right? You'll be cleaning a few little messes, but he'll get the idea pretty quickly that having wet underwear isn't the funnest thing. Worked for my little one.

We tried our daughter too at around 18 months and have been trying ever since. She really didn't pick up on it until a couple weeks ago.

.
We tried that, letting Jory run without his diaper but we have to many cats for that to be safe for him. :yikes:

Thanks for the help. I think we might be pushing the whole thing on him. We are really sick of diapers. If any one thinks of anything else let me know and good luck to everyone in thier own training wars.

2 is young, especially for a boy. I'd wait a few months, especially since he's scared. He's probably not ready.

Boys often do better if you wait until they are about three. I found that to be true with both of mine. The potty chair thing never worked. They wouldn't use it. We started by having them stand up at the regular toilet and then we threw in some froot loops and told him to see if he could hit them. It became a fun game to go potty because they got to try and sink the froot loops which had the added benefit of teaching aiming as well.

I've heard of that. That might work , as long as he doesn't try to throw other things in. Thanks!

Ok, I have no experience but I've read a lot of books, something that came up a lot is that kids *hate* getting wet, and lots of people use that to potty train... they use cloth diapers for example, as they feel wet, and the kids pretty much end up asking to go potty just to avoid the feeling.

It might work.

Another thing that might help, provided the weather is warm, is to put him in shorts without underwear or diapers on underneath and have him play outside for the day.. You tell him that if he feels he needs to go pee then all he has to do is pull down the shorts and go. Peeing outside always seems to be a great thing for boys. Plus it has the added benefit of them not having to try and hold it until they can make it to the bathroom. Then once they get used to the idea of recognizing when they need to go, you can start catching them as they start to pull down their drawers and help them into the house.

lol. Try making it fun to go to the toilet. My mum came home from work one day when my brother was little, she walked in and my brothers dad said "joe's toilet trained" Great she thought, later that night she heard voices comeing form the toilet, walked in and there they are, joe's dad going "thats right mate, do curly ones" Sure maybe a little extra cleaning at first but he learnt pretty fast i imagine :p

As for the fear, what exactly is it of? My sister was always too scared to shower or bath by herself for years, she was frightened of sharks coming up the plug hole, so what did my stepdad do? Got a cattle prod, went around and zapped every drain in the bathroom, she wasn't frightened after that.

I think we are finally getting the hang of it. All it took was him falling in. Not sure why on that one but whatever works I guess
