Things are different today . First we didn't have the disposables , and a wet diaper wasn't pleasant . Second , babies would be started sitting on a an insert on regular toilet when the could comfortable sit on their own ..... with a book . For a very short time and praised if they happened to go . Sure it took months , but they never were afraid of the toilet . I never had my son stand to pee until he wanted to do it like Daddy . When they seemed ready , the training pants went on and then the underwear followed later . Jan had a bell for Nash to ring if he went and then a sticker of his choice , BMs are easier to track when you know their habits . Think back to puppies !!! Piddle pads vs disposable diapers !

Here's a shot in the dark but maybe he is afraid because you are 'pushing' him too early? He's just two and if he's not ready he's not ready. Not trying to be harsh or anything but if you don't follow his cues you can really set back toilet training even more.

One of my friends trained his kids by letting them pick out their own really special underwear. Something they really loved and wouldn't want to soil. They'd try harder not to mess in them.

Good luck!

I agree. I woudln't even try much before 3 myself. Wel I have tried...and failed at 18mo-2yrs. 3-4 is a better time here for us. BTW if he's too big for diapers go to PullUps....they make those for like...FOUR year old lol.
I agree.

Every doctor Cole has has told us to wait until he's 3 or if he's showing all the signs of being ready to potty train (letting us know when he's wet/dirty, uncomfortable in a soiled diaper, waking up dry in the mornings, has good communication skills, etc.).

Cole will be 3 in June and I will start potty training then. IMO I don't see the rush just yet as I don't feel he is mature enough at this point. He's also in a size 6 diapers (he's right at 40 lbs), but they still have room if needed.

A lot of problems arise when a child is pushed to early. I guess my best advice would be to back off and completely forget about it for while.

Also, Cole picked out his own potty at Walmart and got the cutest little dumptruck (yes, I know the pun  ) that makes working noises and whatnot. I have it set up as the step stool right now, but he understands it's a potty but is just getting used to seeing it in his bathroom and not being afraid of it.

Maybe letting your son pick out his own potty would help. But letting his mind & body mature some more would also probably help.

Good luck!

EDIT: LOL! I just noticed the date on the thread. However, I'm going to leave my post in case it might help someone else.

LOL I know this is an old thread but it's funny it popped up now because I just read a pretty good article about potty training.

and one of their tips for refusal to go was to not push and instead reward yourself when you go potty lol. Basically the suggest that whenever ANYONE in your house goes to the potty you should all make a big deal and eventually your kid may want in on the excitement and try the potty on his own. But this is the line that left me laughing....

"Act as excited as possible. This may mean clapping for yourself or (worse?) clapping for your husband" LOL I just couldn't stop laughing at the image of clapping because Brian went potty lmao

In your sig it says he's 4...

anyway, I agree he's too young. 2 is young, especially for a boy, and chances are if he's reacting the way he is, he's not ready.

eta: OH. Haha. I guess he is 4.

Lol, I 100% plan on doing this. I don't think it'll be too hard to convince Zach and the in-laws...their dog is going on 4 and every SINGLE time she goes potty the entire house has to yell "GISELLE MADE POOPY ON PAPER!! YAY" and clap...Giselle will actually BARK at you after she goes if no one notices and cheers for her right away.
