So, I supervise and close the store I work at BOTH nights it closes. The other days, it's open 24 hours. The nights I close are FRIDAY and SATURDAY.... nights NO ONE else wants to work, let alone close. And I'm kinda miffed because I get paid the same amount as the people I'm supervising.

Do I need a reality check? Is this messed up? Shouldn't supervisors be paid better than the people below them? I will gladly adjust my attitude if necessary... I was just wondering what you guys thought.

Uhh, yeah..... If you have more responsibility, you should be compensated for it. Seems like common sense for employers, unfortunately sometimes it isn't.

Is it part of your job description to close on Friday and Saturday, or do you just do it because you volunteered when no one else would? If it's your job description, even more reason to get paid more. If not, you should ask to get your schedule changed!

How long have you been supervising? working there in general? Is there any sort of trial period for supes?

This is why I never ask what people I work with, make. Nor do I hang around if they want to discuss it.

Because sometimes a lot more goes into a paycheck than what you do...like seniority, or knowledge of various parts of the job, or new people being paid more/less walking in, than people who started 1yr back because the economy has changed, etc.

While I would be pissed, it's not something I would quit over. Not in this economy. Right now, I doubt I would even complain to my boss about it. Too many people losing their jobs to complain about the one you have.

A lot of nurses and other staff where I work are making 1/2 to 2/3 what they were making in september because of budget cuts and none of them have quit. Even healthcare jobs are suffering. That's when you know things are bad.

I have been working here for two and a half years. I have been supervising on the nights we close for two years and three months. I did not volunteer to close... it is part of my job description. I'm responsible for all customer satisfaction disputes, all monetary exchange, and ensuring quality of EVERYTHING that happens while I'm on duty those nights. Overnight shift gets paid more.

I was told when I switched to supervising that I couldn't get what I was asking for as a pay grade because the person working there two years wasn't getting paid what I was asking for. I totally understood. I also knew that people were complaining about what they were getting paid and it came to my knowledge then that I was supervising for what the people I was working with were being paid. I brought this up and got a raise.
The people I am working with have been here no longer than six months. They also both leave right when the store closes. I am here doing paperwork and counting down drawers and locking things up for an hour past that at least. Sometimes I'm here late with work that wasn't completed or customers that haven't finished their projects.

Needless to say... I'm feeling VERY unappreciated.

Well, if you DON'T have a discussion about it, you're going to keep getting more and more frustrated and that will affect your job performance, which will negate your very valid point that as you have been there longest and have the responsibility, you are due more pay.

You should also address the fact that you're doing the crappy shifts on a regular basis.

As a former employee of the place where Phoenix works... I'm not surprised she is STILL not getting supervisor pay.

They pay practically minimum wage - heck, when the minimum wage went up, they considered that my "raise".

This place has a long established pattern of HORRIBLE treatment of employees. Sexism runs rampant, employee discontent is ever-present. The parking lot is 4 blocks away - yes, female employees get to walk 4 blocks at MIDNIGHT through a not-so-nice part of town to get to their cars. Alone. The parking passes go the manager and the full time male staff, if they get handed out at all.

You don't get breaks. If you do happen to be lucky enough to get a break, you're expected to eat as fast as you can so you can get back to work.

Honestly, anything is better than the shitehole that is... that place. It really is a shame.

Oh, did I mention they don't offer benefits? And that the highest paid employee there does *nothing*, pumps breast milk all day (we're talking every 20 minutes, for 20 minutes - then stores it in the employee fridge next to OUR FOOD), and takes two weeks off during the ONE time of year when she actually has a job to do?

Oh man... I could go on and on about that job......

Before I quit, I was in the same position as Phoenix, sort of. I opened the store, and was the AM "supervisor" - yet, I got no supervisor pay, and no recognition of my supervisory position. It was horrible, we were understaffed in the mornings, I'd have lines of customers *to the door* - customers getting mad, customers leaving - because it was JUST ME in the first three hours of work, and usually I had piles of work that the night crew had left for me.

Did I mention that I'd work until 8pm or so, then have to be back to open the store at 6am? Major suckage.

The manager is psycho religious, and thinks that women are inferior to men in every way... and it shows.

GAWD... I'd leave work *every day* seething mad. It makes me angry just thinking about it. GRRRRR...... :madgo:

You forgot the design work you did because the designer wouldn't or couldn't do what someone asked for, and since you had skill in that area, often ended up doing that in the evenings without pay for your talents. You forgot that. :)

YES. I forgot that part... I think I had blocked it out of my mind. OH - also, I was the only other person (other than the main operator) that knew how to use the press. I didn't get paid extra for THAT either. *grumble grumble*
