Maverick is a 5 month old red ACD who is hearing impaired. I have brought him home because our rescue is over run and he is being terrorized in there. I really have no clue how to train a deaf dog. I can not keep him here much more then a couple of weeks at most so I have to really get this guy out where he can get help and a good forever home. He was slated to be PTS . He is learning quite fast 1 hour and he follows a hand signal to sit. He had an accident on the carpet and I stopped him in mid stream and showed him the dog door now he bolts out side after 1 lesson. He is one of the friendliest guys I have yet to meet and loves everyone. He gets along great with Whiskey they are playing romping through the house now. Kahlua is fine with him too. No small animal aggression what so ever. He is fixed and up on shots too. If anyone here knows how to train a deaf boy I could use some advice. This is our little foster boy Maverick

Oh God, isn't he sweet?

Aussie, I had a deaf cat and I would imagine it's very similar. What I found is they compensate and hand signals come VERY easily to them. They are also very in tune with vibrations as well. I bet this baby will learn VERY fast.

I've heard of I think, Colleen(Doc) using vibrations with a deaf Doxie she had in her class. It's worth a PM :)

She's gorgeous!!

What a cutey!

With deafies, lazer lights or flashlights are your friend. You can use those to get his attention. What you will have to do is teach him hand signals, which sounds daunting, but is generally easy.

Remember, they have no problems communicating, you just have to learn a new method. As TM said, they are very intune - they will watch you for cues.

I'd recommend joining the DDeaf group on yahoo - you will find a huge amount of information there for training and living with a deaf dog.

Best of luck!

I am only keeping him to find a forever home. I can not keep another one seriously or I would have many more. I just need to teach him enough that some one some where will want him and give him a home. I am so burned out.

as long as you've his attention, training should be virtually the same as training a hearing dog with hand signals. Treats might come in handy, if vibrations get his attention, great, and if he can hear some pitches, a dog whistle or something might work.

You can even use the clicker method, but substitute a hand signal (thumbs up, OK, etc). you'd do something like:

1. Signal,
2. Treat
3. Repeat a handful of times.
4. Give the signal for "sit"
5. As soon as he sits, change your hand from "sit" to the signal for Ok, good, etc. and treat.

Because Zoomers I needed to be home with him and I really would have liked him out on the lake but was too worried to do it. He I am afraid you would have fallen madly in love with and I may have had to drive you and him back to Kansas lol

I've never trained a deaf dog, but I found this web page that seems to have a lot of info and links.
http://www.wagntrain.com/deaf_dog.htm
Great link and I so thank you. I have had him 5 hours now and he is just so darn sweet and eager to please and his learning is already coming along . He is a counter surfer and I caught him on the dinning table but when I showed him down twice it has not happened again even with bait.
