What does everyone use on their dogs for flea/tick preventative?

I'm trying desperately not to go the Frontline/Advantix route, looking for something safer (and possibly cheaper!).

Right now we're not using anything because the vet gave my parents advantix which is not safe around cats and my parents are too lazy to return it and buy something that IS safe around cats.

So far we've found two deer ticks, one hadn't bit him yet and one had been on for a short time (not engorged). So I guess we'll see how it goes. I'd like to be using SOMEthing for the ticks because Lyme Disease frightens me. Though it seems that, besides Advantix, most don't even kill the tick for two days and I feel like we find ticks by then anyways. But I still feel like we should have it just in case we miss one.

Ticks are BAD around here. Jackson already had Lymes once so I keep him all year round on preventatives. He goes on Frontline from around September-April beacuse the ticks aren't as crazy when it cools down. In the summer, K9 Advantix is a must.

Frodo is on Frontline cause that is what he's been on before and ticks are RIDICULOUS!

Thinking of trying Advantix when I run out of Frontline.
I would love to use more natural remedies, but I have yet to find one that is halfway effective.

Same here

We have a huge tick problem in Maine. I swear just going outside the leap on anything moving and warm.

I currently have my dogs on Frontline but hate, hate, hate that it's such a toxic compound but nothing else seems to work. Someone mentioned 2000mg of Garlic for both humans and dogs but I haven't looked into that yet.

Also my 6 chickens eat ticks and I have another 25 chicks due to arrive next week and I would guess they might be ready to run free range at 8 weeks or so to eat more nasties.

Regular Frontline Top Spot here! Just started it again this year when we started seeing ticks. :p We've used it for about 13 years I think.

Nothing at the moment, but when I do use something it's Frontline Plus.

I'd like to try Vetri-Science's herbal spray, but I don't know how effective it is. It isn't long-lasting, and won't hold up to swimming, which are definite cons.

When I start seeing nasties I give in and use Advantix. Frontline quit working here several years ago; even the vets who sell it will say it hasn't been effective, plus there's the mosquito repellent aspect of the Advantix. I only use it for about 3 months out of the year though.

Frontline. Only because I get it for free.... I've never seen a tick on any of my pets so its not something I've ever been worried about.

Bug Off (granules, not chewables) from Springtime. Was very very hesitant at first (they hardly got even half of the recommended dosage the first few weeks), but it works, no adverse reactions, and vet approves. . . they still don't get the full dose (just half).

ETA: I know it must be doing something because my dogs go through heavily wooded areas where people have warned me about ticks, have been to shows where people have complained their dogs came home with fleas, etc. and I have not seen one of either on my crew since starting the supplement.

Advantix for Charlotte. We do have a cat, but have never had an issue with it effecting him. Not one tick on her however, and we live in a highly infested wooded area. Our cat is on frontline, and the same goes for him having no ticks.

We use Frontline or Advantix here. But I don't cover at all during the winter. However, this is my first winter in this new place we moved into so I have to monitor the dogs (there is a lot of grass and wooded areas) and check if they get either ticks or fleas, if they do, back onto Advantix for us.

We're using Comfortis for fleas. For ticks/mosquitoes/other annoying bugs we use a spray called Ticked Off!, so far it has been going good.

Nothing. Fleas and Ticks aren't a huge problem here and when we do happen to go to the mountains for hiking i give her a bath with Neem Oil Shampoo and we've never had a tick or fleas or anything.

I bought a bottle of Vets Best Flea/Tick Spray, and have been using it whenever we go anywhere by a lake or in the woods (anywhere where there are high concentrations of little nasties). I also bought a package of Sentry Natural Defense, and have given one application of it. However, after reading some not-so-good reviews of really bad reactions, I'm a little wary of doing it again.

Thoughts?

We don't have many ticks (I have only seen a few in my entire life and that was all at once..) But my vet said the tick stuff doesn't stop your dog from getting bitten, it just kills the tick so it falls off after a little bit. Wouldn't your dog still be at risk of lyme disease even with the frontline?
