I use Frontline every 3 months unless ticks are bad then every month. Gavroche gets Advantix when the mosquitos are bad because he getd big red welts from them. I also get Frontline free from the Merial reps and aHave a stockpile of it. I have 6 months free of Trifexis from the Elanco rep I'll be trying once ticks aren't an issue.

We don't have many ticks (I have only seen a few in my entire life and that was all at once..) But my vet said the tick stuff doesn't stop your dog from getting bitten, it just kills the tick so it falls off after a little bit. Wouldn't your dog still be at risk of lyme disease even with the frontline?
ticks have to be attached for a period of time before they can transmit lyme disease. the frontline is supposed to kill them before that point, but yes, they will still bite and attach.

ticks are hard to kill with spot-on stuff because they jump on and attach, they're not walking around through the haircoat, getting more and more chemical on them. merial is coming out with a new product that adds a low dose of amitraz to frontline plus, which is supposed to make ticks more active and unable to attach so that they keep moving so they keep getting more frontline on them. kill time is supposed to start at six hours instead of the 24ish that it currently is.

I live in a tick infested place and find that even with fleas, Adventix works better on my dogs. I do have a cat and don't have to worry about the Adventix with the dogs since they are to beneath for any close contact. Nemo, the cat, is on Frontline.

Jackson got Lymes on Frontline... so yeah, it's possible.

We use K9 Advantix in the hot months because we never see ticks while he's on it, I guess it repels them pretty good. With Frontline, we do still occasionally see them, even if they kill them shortly after.

That is how Frontline works though--it doesn't repel them, it kills them after they ingest the poison. So you can still find ticks on your dog, but in theory, they should be dying and not passing on disease.

At the clinic I'm interning at, we just started testing dogs for tick-borne diseases each year, instead of just the standard heartworm test... and I know a couple days ago, we had a dog come in, owner said they use Frontline.... and lo and behold, we do the snap test, and the dog comes up positive for Anaplasmosis. So there's always a chance of them getting something even while on prevention, but nothing works 100%.

Thanks for all the info, guys!

I think I'm going to keep using what I'm using, since it seems to work! I'll talk to my vet about it the next time I talk to her, too, just to get her opinion.

As someone else said, the ticks have to be on your pets for a period of time before transmitting any diseases. Frontline is suppose to kill them before that happens. However, I've heard of animals getting lyme disease while being on frontline. I've never heard of a lyme disease case with dogs on advantix, though. Maybe it's happened, but I've heard nothing but good things with advantix.

We had a recent flea outbreak - first one in YEARS - and Frontline did squat. Once it was safe to re-dose , we used Advantage instead and it actually worked. I think the fleas around here are resistant to Frontline.

Revy can't have Advantage though... so I'm not sure what to do with her. We just bathe her often and watch her for fleas.

The times I do use flea/tick control, I have Vectra. Used to use Frontline (never had a problem with it), but the vets office quit carrying it and Vectra is what I get free.

I'm due to get a flea/heartworm med combination through work here in the next few weeks (not Revolution...Sentinel, maybe?) so I'll be using that once we get it.

Yeah, Jackson got lymes while on Frontline, so I know it's definitely not 100%. Never even seen a tick on him when we use Advantix. But I don't particularity like the permethin in it... so I use Frontline for all of the year except summer months.
