I went to the local animal shelter today just to see the dogs. I was looking through them and I noticed that most of them were pitbulls and it was OBVIOUS that they have been fought. I'm not trying to worsen the pit bull stereo type but I wanted to know what the rules were for these dogs? It seemed to me that they could be adopted out with no problems. Should agressive dogs like these be allowed to be adopted? Its SO obvious theyve been fought (scars all over the place) but they were still allowed to be adopted into homes. I wish they would do a better job at these animal shelters. :(

Well the rules depend on the town you live in. Most likely, they'll be the first dogs put to sleep if the shelter gets overcrowded.

Should dogs like that be allowed to be adopted out? I think so. Intra-species aggression doesn't have to mean they are aggressive to people. And even an aggressive dog can be rehabilitated. At the same time, the shelter needs to do some very thorough screening to make sure any potential adopters are aware of all the risks and capable of caring for a special needs dog like that.

Well, if the dogs have been fighting, they are most likely just animal aggressive. Just because they are animal aggressive doesn't mean they are going to be human aggressive too. That could be the most loveable and loyal dog to a human, he just might not like other dogs.

I feel so extremely bad for those dogs who are MADE to fight with other dogs and be aggressive. I have seen so many of them, and they are sweet and loving dogs who would normally never have done that. It's awful. It makes my heart hurt so bad. :(

I do feel really awful for those dogs that are made to fight.. And when I see them, they are really sweet by nature dogs.. It's really sad, i don't know how people have the heart to do these kind of things.

I don't know how they do either, but I sure wouldn't mind kicking a few of those mean people in the face...

it is probably the most horrible thing I can imagine...
My Rosie was adopted from our local Humane Society, and they did a thorough backgroud check on our home to be sure they were not putting her back into a bad situation. They do not adopt out pit-bulls to sketchy people or houses. They came out and did an observation of our house and backyard to be sure. :p

I could have walked out of the shelter with any dog I wanted with no hassle as long as I paid the $50 adoption fee. I think we need better workers at my animal shelter.

Our shelter is like that. It's not the workers it's the policy and the money aspect. They don't screen anybody. We chose to introduce Mikey and Maverick to that pup we wanted and they didn't like her. Well, Mikey didn't. THEN they decided that it wouldn't work. We could just as easily have not done that and taken her home.
Anyone with $40 can walk in a take home a dog. $10 a cat

Want to say a good thing about out shelter..it is over crowded..the funds are low..it covers a huge area..so wayside waifs has come on board to help take over the ones that are adoptable..if your shelter has problems..maybe it is time for problem solving..if the funds are low..send your dollar there instead of buying a lottery ticket...there are solutions if people get "on board".

i hate shelters like that because all people have to do is go adopt a dog and use it in the pit. GRRRRRRR! lol we all know how strongly i feel about that. i wouldnt adobt from there derectly cuz there could also be a health problem with the dog. i think all dogs should be adopted out tho no matter what their breed. you just need a experienced dog owner for the special needs dogs

Well, there could be a health problem. Most dogs that show signs of illness are .... well you know. And they have a good return policy. Sadly though if something infectious goes through the shelter all the animals get put to sleep. even if it's treatable because they don't have the funds.

I know the women that work there and they have good hearts. It's a hard job and they get little financing. I respect them I just don't respect the policies and the gov't

i do believe you have the right to have the dog checked out by your vet...if their was a problem, i am sure they would take the dog back..the fact is when their is a problem..that is the first place people call.Dogs get out, dogs get lost. Good dogs get lost too...eveybody calls the same number..help me out here homeless! Tell us about the most adoptable guys you know in your shelter right now! They are the most at risk for everything..in a place that smells of panic and death. they need the chance FIRST! Victor was in a place like that..Connie Guthrie with Save_Our_Strays calls around and sees who is adoptable.and at the end of their time .then drives over, takes the dog to her kennel and with a goodly share of her own money she puts the dog up and gives it a second chance.then she drives them to adoptafests like the ones at petsmart trying to give them the birthrite chance they should have..She is a Saint! .if it wasn't for her, Vic, (and a hundred others) would be history! He was getting past the adoptable puppy age..he wasn't cute..he was skinny.he flailed his legs everywhere trying to be loved..he was so scared when i brought him home....and now he is the kind of dog people (men/hunters) ask me if i want to sell..a dog that makes me so proud to be at the other end of his leash..he turns heads...he is beautiful in spirit as well as body. They said he was an english mix..i don't believe so because i have found too many ep that look just like him...even if he was a mix he would still be Victor. For those who don't know him..he is in my gallery. If i had gone to a breeder and bought per say a wiemer..which i was dreaming about I would have lost so badly the very dog that needed me as much as i needed him.

I just asked my editor if I could write a story about our shelters funding for the paper. LOL But even as I was asking I knew that it was a little too close to home. I couldn't write it because I was too close to it. So I asked her to assign it someone else. Hopefully she will. There are a couple of students that work for the paper on their holidays and one loves to do stuff like that. I hope he gets it. :)

Connie is a good story...anywhere would be a help i would think..i like stories like that
connie got into this as a tribute to the death of her daughter, at least that is what i understood.
could you imagine what one day's worth of lottery tickets could do for a local shelter? i had a friend that owns a station..i talk up there sometimes cause i don't know anybody and that is my social circle...i see ticket after ticket go..for what? i could feed my family for a week on one shift.

I don't know if it's still the shelter's policy here, but it has always been that anything remotely resembling a Pit or Pit-type dog, Rotties and even some Dobies were put down and not even given a chance to be adopted out. They'd been advised by the county attorney at some point that the liabilities precluded placing these dogs in new homes! I have a very hard time dealing with that policy . . . thankfully, there's a no-kill organization, Noah's Arc, that puts animals in foster homes while in the interim until they're adopted.

I was just at the shelter and they have to put down a wild cat that someone trapped and brought in. :( They say there's no chance of it being adoptable.

Also, there is a nice grey neutered cat their. He is about 3.5 and I was thinking of adopting him. He's shy and not doing too well at the shelter. I don't know how much longer he'll be there if he doesn't get adopted. :( The only thing is that the owner says he does not get along well with other cats. Is there anyway to get around this? Maybe he would like (eventually) three GIRL cats.
