I used to prefer flashy dogs. Now, I much prefer solid color, preferably dark. Solid black, black/tan, dark brindle, and black sable are my favorite colors :)

But color is the least important trait to me when choosing a dog. Yellow/tan is my least favorite color, but I would never turn a dog away because of it.

I think I used to love merle when I first saw merle dogs, but now I am not a fan of merle at all - I still think merle is very pretty, but I don't ever see myself wanting a merle dog. Difficult to say exactly what I mean, because I think merle looks lovely, just not on a dog for me... similar case with long coated German Shepherds.

That being said, I still think brindle is gorgeous, but prefer a darker coat or just brindling on the legs.

Funnily enough, my first reaction to Trent was, upon seeing him as a puppy, "eugh, wrong color..." :lol-sign:

I wanted a black/red saddle back, got myself a black/tan blanket back, though everyone thought him to be a bi-color at an early age. I didn't like sable much, either. Now? My favorite is black sable (not dark sable), but bi-colors and blanket backs are coming in at a close second. Then it's black/red, then light sable.

In Border Collies, I will always love black/white and tri-colors.

I used to prefer blue merle BC's over anything. Didn't care for B&W's at all. Now B&W is my favourite colour, closely followed by black tri and choc/white.

I'm not really into merle much anymore - I like Poppy's colouring because tis so simple. She's not very flashy and her markings are quite dark which I like.

It's interesting how your own dog can change your opinions.

When I was in the market for a BC, I wanted a SMALL, blk/wht female with a little blaze up the face or a merle. Oh and preferably with prick ears. I got the LARGEST puppy in the litter, who was a male, who had tricolour markings and floppy ears. The only thing I got that I had originally wanted was the coat type.

I couldn't be happier and now LOVE Spy's look :D

My first dog, was a "Colored headed white" Tri. Black tri is a favorite of mine, along with b/t. I must also admit, for as much as I love tri in other breeds, as for my Pems I do prefer a nice "Rich" red/white overall with Red-head-tri second. I guess I'm on the "plain" side.

As for those "Fancy/Eye-catching colors", I would LOVE a large brindle male Cardi someday! But, I'm not a big fan of them. I really have to admit that merle is probably one of my least favorite colors in dogs, especially with "Glass eyes", it almost gives me that "creepy porcelain doll" feeling.

i used to love the very flashy patterns as well (namely merle and variants within). lately, especially with my interest in Dobermans being so strong, i'm drawn to more simple coats with two colours. red has also been appealing to me more; not a chocolate red, but a Rhodesian/Thai Ridgeback red. that deep rich red is to die for, but i used to be very meh about it.

i still prefer some breeds in flashier colours. i'm a big fan of red merles in certain breeds.
i love a nice brindle when the dog has a good amount of white on it to contrast.

buckskin is one of my all-time favourites, as well.

It varies from breed to breed. I usually start off with a strong color preference though and then spend so much time thinking about them and looking at them that I slowly begin to become less picky and like them all. When I had my first collie the only color I ever wanted was a sable, preferably a nice rich mahogany sable, oh and a smooth coat? Never. Now I really could not care less about coat color and I could really go for a smooth. I was all about the blue merles when I got Desoto and I still like a nice merle and admire self merles but if I get another aussie it will be either a black bi or red tri.

I tend to like flashy coats especially merles. I used to not like red merles or red of any pattern but now I prefer a red dog to anything else. I would prefer a red merle, red tri, or solid red dog over blue merle, black tri, or black. I also prefer a lot of white on the faces, I love split faces!

As far as Aussies go, I will always love Blue Merles but I am definitely starting to like the Red/White Bis, that color is so gorgeous to me.

The more flashier/splashier/color, the better to me.

The only color I'm really not a fan of is white. When I was younger I wanted black animals--I now have a brindle dog, a brown dog, 2 calico cats, and 3 green birds-lol. I still like black dogs though.

I still like certain blue merles, and they used to be my absolute favorite, but now I think I am fading out of it a little bit. Certain blue merles still make me be like "omg gorgeous!" but some colors are a bit too busy for me and I think I prefer tricolors the best now in general.

In regards to my boy, I do wish his back was a bit darker. When his hair grows longer, it's very very silver/gray-ish color (as most yorkies are) but I wish he had the darker non-standard back... sometimes people mistake him for being old or something, LOL. Luckily I keep it short and it gets darker the shorter it is.

I am not big on most solid black dogs... first off, they are sooo hard to photograph, LOL. I guess I'm not too big on most any solid color though.

Longer hair:

Shorter hair:

(like this best - colorwise).

I love Spy's look too. One thing that gets me every time is a masked tricolor.

Yes I LOVE that look on paps! Although it wasn't a standard colour and I wouldn't ever condone breeding for it, I saw a picture of a liver pap and thought he was SO HANDSOME! :yikes: And thank you :D I am partial to him but also completely biased ;)

Red BCs also make me swoon :)

Mine are still pretty much the same. Merles are my favorite, tricolors second. I like some white on a dog, don't prefer solids as much. Don't care for brindles.

I really love merles, brindles, any sables, bi colors, gray, husky/wolf colors, and any unusual markings.

And apparently I have a thing for redheads lol.

My absolute favourite pap colour was black and white, followed by hound tri. But now I lean to a really nice sable and white. But luckily, I like all the pap colours.

I find it hard to fathom that for myself in some breeds I'll love one colour, but for others I will not like that particular colour so much. For example I love liver GSPs, but chocolate labs are my least favourite lab colour. And I love black labs, not so much of a fan of the black GSPs.

I love white markings especially white paws and legs and split faces. Dark sables in GSD's make me swoon. Blue merles without a lot of white are stunning to me but red merles are not appealing. I also like solid color dogs in darker shades, black labs are my favorite. Red Dobes and liver dalmations. Brindle with white is great but all brindle not so much.

I'm not a huge fan of blanket colorations or dogs that are one color in the lighter shades. And for some reason I don't really like tricolors. Black and white, or brown and white is awesome but all three together don't really do it for me.

But like everyone else here color is so far down the list of what I care about when selecting a dog it really doesn't matter.

I actually am not a sable fan but I own one. I am also not a blue/grey fan but I own one of those too. lol A good dog is a good dog regardless of color. Color is the last thing I look at but I prefer pointed(red, tan, mahogany etc.) color patterns, bi-colors, tri-colors etc.

I used to love love love merles - now while I still quite like them, I'd take a solid colored dog just as easily and in some breeds I prefer solid. I used to like blue eyes too as a kid and now I generally prefer brown eyes.

I was never really a sable fan in GSDs but now I really like a lot of sables.

Quinn's color has grown on me but shaded sable is still my favorite ES color!

Still not really a fan of solid white dogs or dogs with a ton of white (like 70% or more) on them but a good dog isn't a bad color :)
