Are there certain breeds that you would rather not ever intentionally own? I know some rescues come along, certain dogs, or certain situations where you would take one, but are there breeds that you would Not go looking for?

For me there is a longer list of dogs I would Not own, rather then breeds I would. Breeds I can think of for one reason or another I would have to say no to are:
Huskys
Pugs
Beagle
English Bulldog
Dachshund
Cocker

There are alot of others that my lifestyle/personality doesnt mesh with. Northern breeds in general, terriers, and scent hounds do not mix well with me. :) I try to stay away from those breeds if possible.

I do not have many breeds on my for sure "would not own" list, since I base my opinions on individual dogs, rather than breeds. I do know I couldn't own any highly dog aggressive dog, and breeds known for darting and taking off are pretty much out of question for me based on our family often seeming to forget to close doors ;)

We have a foster Boxer now who is just TOO exuberant for us. I am not into the happy "OMG I LOVE EVERYONE!" dogs, at all. I prefer laidback 1 family/1 person dogs like the Cardigans. Friendly towards strangers, but not always 'outgoing'. I guess I'll use the word aloof. Dogs who prefer their people over others.

The list is pretty long, LMAO. But some serious, serious NEVERS are:

Labs. X1000
Huskies
Most scent hounds
JRTs
Anything under 15 lbs or so
Beagles - oh god, beagles
Anything that can't breed/whelp naturally
Pugs

The list of breeds that I would own is very short, so that puts the list of breeds that I would not own as, well... the rest of them. LOL! I like my APBTs, Staffybulls, Akitas, a few of the rare breeds, and some of the sighthounds. And since 2003 it has only been APBTs, and that is likely to continue for some time. There are lots of breeds that I really like in small doses, but would never want to live with. I actually really like Yorkies, but I like sending them home with their parents after I get to love on them. And I think Schnauzers are the dopest thing, but just as happy that I'm not responsible for one. Bostons are super funny dogs, too, but there again, I like saying "okay, off with you now." Same with Shih Tzus.

I'm pretty positive about what I don't want.

I don't want to live with a terrier (any of them), any brachycephalic breed, most dogs who are probably going to die before they're ten. I also don't want an extremely large dog with maybe the exception of newfies. Also, no hairless dogs.

Yeah, it would be easier and far shorter to list the ones I do want to own...

Yea... anything that isn't a scent or sight hound, APBT, chihuahua, boston terrier, berger picard, or dobe is pretty much a no-go... lol

Most terrier breeds. I am so NOT a terrier person! Except for pit bull terriers, I think I'd like owning one of those.

Malinois. I admire them, I think they are beautiful, but own one? No thank you.

Anything really tiny, like Chis. I don't want a dog I could lose in the house (true story, babysat once where there was a "pocket pom", it was storming, and after a particularly loud peal of thunder I lost the dog in the house for an hour, finally found it in the closet in the master bedroom).

I would be very hesitant to own a cocker spaniel. Working at a grooming place as a receptionist, I saw many horribly bred cockers with nasty ears, nasty skin, eye problems, etc. Most of them at least had decent temperaments, but all those health issues really turned me off. Thanks to people like Maf I know there can be healthy cockers, but I am still wary of the breed.

I am wary of Shar Peis for the same reasons as cocker spaniels. So many health problems! Plus that bristly hair irritates my skin for some reason.

Border collies, I think they are beautiful and awesome but I do believe they would drive me nuts!

There are only a handful of breeds that I would actively seek to own. However, there are some that I can never, ever see myself owning:

Akita (love the look, wouldn't want to deal with the temperament)
Cane corsos
Presas
Filas
Dogos
Neapolitan mastiffs
Cocker spaniels
Mals
Most terriers other than the bully breeds
Hairless breeds
Most livestock guardian breeds unless I had actual livestock that needed guarding
Basset hounds
Bulldogs
Mini or toy poodles
Chow chows
Italian greyhound

Most anything that is in the terrier, hound, and the like group. Most toy breeds, too.

I like dogs with Border Collie-type personalities, so most herding breeds I tend to gravitate toward.

Nothing huge. Nothing that sheds buckets, and nothing that won't stick around off leash.

No poodles

Other than that its more an individual dog thing. Many reasons people don't like "X" breed is that they don't like the bad examples of the breed. Take JRTs for example. No they are not for everyone, but the bad ones make them seem much much worse than they really are as a breed. Dekka is one of the least demanding, easy going dogs I have ever owned. No matter how you stretched the definition you couldn't' call her hyper if you tried.

I don't really like retrievers as a group (for me.. they are great when they are other peoples lol) but there is the odd one here or there that I would take home.
