Harry started his cadaver scent training a few months ago, this is only his THIRD time out on "the job" and he is LOVING IT!!!

First session of scent imprinting we used an elbow (yes guys, a decomp. elbow..)

Second session small cooler of blood soaked dirt.

Third session (THIS ONE) was a small glass jar of that same dirt. This find was his FIFTH find of the day the others were concealed in rocks, behind fences and buried in snow. This one i was SUPER proud of as he found the article (no sound sorry) above his head, and on a stinky dumpster!!!
he LOVES to work and is slowly learning the sit on scent....which will be how he is to alert....he also makes sure that prego mom (due in june) SEES that he found the scent and that he is off to find more...so we refocus him with a command but the video runs out.

I am super proud of him, and we are looking at getting a few more training sessions in this week, then getting together with the local search group to do some work when they get together!

I also apologize for the cruddy sun and shadows..they weren't flattering to him or me..lmao

Hope you enjoy!!!

I have utmost respect for boxers! TEaching a dog to scent is one of my favorite things to do. Once they get it it is like a lightbulb goes on! I read somewhere that if you took all the sensors out of a dogs' nose and laid them side by side it would cover the dog completely. Combined with the dedication and responible nature of the boxers i have met i can see it a win win all the way.

WE had a family that lived down the street. Horrible parents from hell and 8 children. THe boxer was the parent, that dog lived and breathed keeping those children safe. I saw him break up arguements, time out toddlers and keep them all out of the street. THe children were taken away from the parents which was the right thing and should have been done years ago. THe lady came and asked me if i wanted to buy the boxer for 200 dollars so she could get her children back. I prayed she never saw their faces again and tried like mad to raise 200 dollars but i just didnt' have it. THat dog was the best dog i ever saw in my life and i pray a thousand fold he ended up in a good place.
If he is a testiment to the breed, they are solid gold.

Smkie--I am sure there are exceptions to every rule, but so far i have to say that what you described is a boxer TO THE TEE!!!!!!

I have to say that with family/kids they are some of the most responsible and protective dogs. Loki is always making sure the kids are "safe" and if they cry i am first to know (i used to do daycare), he would nap on the couch with one of the toddlers and when the lil boy woke up he would clean his face then come and get me (just in the other connecting room) and take me to see the lil boy was up. He also can tell the age appropriateness of his play, now harry isn't AS GOOD at that part, but he is the goofy guy that loves to run around....loki tailors his actions to each person, and age...it is amazing to me.

Thank you guys! I am so excited to keep going with his training! He gets so excited to get out and do it that it motivates ME to get up and do it....cuz to be honest it takes alot to motivate me lately..lmao...

Thanks for letting me share!

Boxers have always intrigued me but I have been around so many just beyond-spastic puppies and young adults that I wasn't sure I could handle one!

when people say boxers can't work they usually mean the catchwork the breed was originally developed for or PP. while there is more than a grain of truth to this, there are enough doing both that i would give any a fair shot rather than dismissing the dog outright. in fact the aussies like them in crossbred pigdogs because of their nose & energy. the main shortcoming as a breed is the weak teeth set, a good hard one tends to lose most of their teeth by age 4. unfortunately this is often passed on in crossbreds and well it's hard to hold a hog w/ just gums (but a lot of dogs try).

I taught my lab to scent a superball when he was a puppy. THe strong oily scent must have been easy to trace because at a very early age i could throw it in a corn field or heavy brush and he would bring it back. HE loved them and was a terror in the house if he had one, would sling it with his head and go barreling after it. When i ran him in the field trials if he wasn't the first dog out, he scented the return of the last dog and took a straight line to the bird everytime. HE could do just fine if he was the first dog out, he was truly amazing, but teaching him to scent didn't hurt a bit either. I ran him for a test dog in the open all age when he was still a puppy of 11 months. He did it just fine and they had to scrape the test.:rofl1:
ONce they learn to use their nose it is just a pleasure to watch them work.

Wish i could watch your dog work!!!! THat would be awesome.

An elbow is seriously gross tho.:yikes:

I know what that i won't hunt my dogs on large game...only because i choose not to but they could do it. As for a weak teeth set, i guess i don't see it.
A good boxer mouth should have a correct structure and be tough and not be easily "lost". I know i don't "pigdog" it, but if one breeds for a correct mouth the teeth shouldn't be lost at 4 years of age. At 5 my oldest male right now, has a solid mouth and can catch and hold med. size animals, hasn't damaged a thing....Interesting...

BUT...i also haven't done anything with a cross either, so that is interesting to learn, THANK YOU!!!

I guarantee you if you ask alot of working dog or search working dog owners if they would use a boxer, most won't....the breed has a stigma, about energy and intelligence...but when you see someone run with it and actually work them they tend to keep working the breed! I can't wait to see if our trainer decides to try one for her next dog!!!!

LOL....my motto with a boxer....Puppy in BRAIN for life...they can learn and they are smart and great dogs, but they are puppies for life...which is awesome for the most part. It is really in how you bring them along, boxers are definitely a challenging breed, they have tons of energy, and they are smart, but they also need someone that will exercise them until they are happy....yup exercise them UNTIL they are happy ...lmfao..they need it!!!!

Not the breed for everyone, but i don't know many people that "go back" once they have one...

please don't take this rude (although it comes across that way in writing it's not meant that way)
you never KNOW what a dog will or will not do unless you actually work them in that field. a lot of "tough" dogs turn into cheerleaders from a safe distance after their first boar, OTH a lot of meek & timid dogs turn into ravenous beasts after their first hog.

Nope i totally understand, i just hope that you weren't offended by my post, it was not intended as such!

But i would def. say that if they are having issues with teeth they need to consider their mouth structures even more!

Great add to the thread, i appreciate it!!

For now i will stick with the SAR work and MAYBE in the future even drugs and some Police K9 donations...i have some interest from a few places for working boxers for Police K9's
