There is no limit in my township. In the city its a max of 3 pets, but its only enforeced if there is a problem. I know MANY people who have more than 3 pets.

Our house has three cats and three dogs. We listen well. It's not well enforced at all and in fact all the dogs are registered. It's one of those things they use if they want to get you for something else.
Hmm I'm not so sure if it's enforced or not here. I was just talking to a lady with 6 dogs and she says she lives in an area with about 1/2 an acre and her yard is completely private. She makes sure the dogs don't bark in the yard as well in fear that her neighbors will report her. She only has 2 neighbors in the area, it's pretty rural...So it's making me a bit scared.

I have a question, the places that do have dog limits, how are they enforced? I seem to remember my American penpal, who lives in Vegas, that they had a limit law there, of three, yet she has 5 dogs. She cares for them well, but I just wonder how she doesn't get caught, especially at there is 4 different breeds, so they all look different
People can call animal control on you like neighbors or people that see you with more than the allowed amount of dogs.

The other thing is animals are all supposed to be licensed every year so they keep the number of animals under your address and they can check that if they need to and send officers to your house.

Edit: I also don't know if it's easy to get a kennel permit. I was checking in the city of Vancouver site and it says you have to apply for a business license first and submit a business plan on how you're going to run the place or something. In the city of Langley where I plan to move, I tried really hard to look it up for couldn't even find anything that says you can apply for a permit. I live in Richmond and I couldn't find any forms either on applying for a kennel license. (by the way, all these cities are considered a part of greater vancouver).

Tech - I'm at the point where I should have a permit. I will not get one because

1) It gives AC permission to access my property at any time for any reason.

2) It allows AC to access any records I have on my dogs.

3) It requires me to supply lists of people I have sold dogs to in or out of county.

4) It mandates how often my dogs must go to a vet if they need it or not.

I'm not a crazy conspiracy person but IMO they can take me to court/prison before I will ever allow them that kind of access to my home or animals.

Do you know how to get one in your area?

I don't mind AC accessing my property as long as they let me know about it. Secretly spying on my property is a big nono.

I don't really care about them accessing info on my dogs either.

I won't be breeding or selling.

I don't understand how they can enforce how often your dog goes to a vet. That's a bit of a weird one.

I just want to follow the laws because in case AC picks up my dog, they should call me by looking up the tattoo/microchip number and my info in the city's database. Plus we get fined a LOT for having an unlicensed dog and AC officers do check once in a while. Sometimes they'll just go to areas where dogs get walked a lot and ask everyone to provide their dog licenses.

You go to the county annex and write a check. $200

St. Paul (where I am) says a maximum of three dogs and cats - so three total. Minneapolis says a maximum of three dogs and three cats - so you could have up to six total.

ETA: This is not highly enforced. I know many people with more than the above that have all their pets licensed, and they've never gotten in trouble for it. I have, however, been told by three different rescues that I cannot adopt from them based on the number of animals I have.

Miami is 4 dogs per household I believe.. but with every added acre of land or with a permit you can have more

Regardless, the city isn't really the one that enforces the law, it's more of the condo associations/apartments the decide

My parents condo has a 2 dog rule. with a weight limit and breed restrictions

All three places that had laws on my list enforced them, in two states. #1 and #4 were basically if they caught you or you were reported. You definitely couldn't register more than the allowed number in a house, though many people just didn't register at all. 'Course that could also burn you since they would check for licenses sometimes, and if your dog ever got loose and was picked up by the AC it was a hefty fine if they were unlicensed.

Place #2 also enforced their 3-dog limit. There you had to register your dog when he or she got their required-by-law rabies shot. I guess you could get your rabies vacc several counties away and they may not know, but most people didn't. There were still some who got around it by registering a dog with a pet-less parent in town, or something along that line.

Also, for the places that had kennel licenses, you basically just contact the county auditor office and fill out the paperwork and hand over money.

It's 3 in town but we're right outside town. Where I'm moving is 3 though I will likely end up with 4 anyways. No one can tell the papillons apart. lol It's definitely not enforced at all. I know many, many people with way more than 3 animals in town.

Hmm, I can't seem to find the pet limits in the county codes.

I found this in Fauquier County's code.

Kennel. Any establishment in which five (5) or more canines, felines, or hybrids of either are kept for the purpose of breeding, hunting, training, renting, buying, boarding, selling or showing.
I found the bolded part funny. It sounds like somebody's out there making cat/dog hybrids. Lol. But it does seem that if you have five intact dogs, and have an oops litter, they could force you into getting a kennel permit.

Pet limit laws are a failure. They are near impossible to enforce, and they do nothing for the welfare of animals. We have cruelty laws. If the pets aren't being cared for, enforce those laws. Different people can care for different numbers of animals. More often than not they cause more killing in shelters as either dogs are seized from perfectly good homes just because those homes are over the limit, or people can't adopt because they would be over the limit.

I don't think our town has ant restriction on numbers. I do have the dogs registered and vaccinated as per the law but the last two years I've gone to get the tags they haven't checked the vet records I brought.

There are a lot of species restrictions though--no wolf hybrids, no constricting snakes like pythons or boas, no tarantulas or scorpions, no monitor lizards, etc.

3 dog limit inside city limits...which basically says 3 dogs when you live on less than an acre.

Now I would like to have 4 dogs but I think I can deal with 3. 2 is just too little!! I'll probably have to contact the city and figure out if I can get some kind of permit to own more. Booooo this sucks.
Google it...every city has an online law book concerning laws and permits and the costs to have them as well as printable applications. I know (here at least) there are quite a few different kennel liscenses you can aquire, I know here we have these two and then it goes up to breeding and boarding kennels with more specific laws and fees.

Private Kennel - Breeding
A private residence where at least 4 but not more than 10 dogs of which one has not been neutered or spayed are owned, kept or maintained.

Private Kennel - Non-Breeding
A private residence where at least 4 but not more than 10 adult dogs of which all have been neutered or spayed are owned, kept or maintained.

Both are $25

I think if you have more than 6 dogs you have to have a kennel license, which I've heard isn't hard to get. But its not monitored, so really unless there is a problem / complaint its not a big deal... but everyone I meet/know tries to adhere to that. When we had 3 of our own, and 3 fosters, it was A LOT and I couldn't (personally) imagine having more.
I don't think there is a cat limit, I could not find anything other than dogs. But there are several places around here that I know of that have about a billion cats so I doubt it.

I think inside city limits there is a three dog limit...but I can't seem to find anything about it online, so maybe there isn't one and it is just set by landlords if you rent...? I'm not entirely sure.

Where we live, there isn't any limit on the number of dogs. We have to have all of our neighbor's permission if we want to get livestock, but other than that we're good to go. lol
