Super cute little terrier type dog. We found her running around a street trying to jump into the cars so we caught her. No collar at all. Completely filthy and to top it off, she's in heat. She looks young, nice white teeth. Not thin or anything like that but was so thirsty she was trying to drink the salt water in the pool. SUPER friendly and happy and loves tennis balls. Freaked out when we put a collar on her and hates the crate she's in on our porch right now. No one seems to be out looking for her in the nearish area.

I gave her a bath and she's crated on the porch with food and water.

Now what do I do? I have never found a dog before that I didn't almost immediately find the owners out calling for it. Pics coming soon.

I would check craigslist for listings. and if there is nothing try posting an ad with the dogs general description

IMO if by tomorrow evening there is still nothing on craiglist or anything, I would make some signs and post them around the area, pet stores, vets, etc..

Do you think something like:

Found small tan and grey terrier mix on X road would be enough?

I am kind of concerned because she's cute and very obviously intact. Just the type of dog people might want.

I wouldn't describe the dog. I would just say small dog found, call to identify. That way you won't get people looking to get a free dog, especially one who isn't spayed...

Also wouldn't hurt to call the local shelters and say you found a dog because that would be the first place I would call if my dog went missing. Honestly though, the fact that she is out while in heat... I wonder if she may just be dumped?

I would DEFINITELY leave out the physical description! Make them call to identify :)

Yeah we kind of think she might be dumped but we don't want to assume anything of course. I would LOVE to reunite her with her owner if that's possible.

How to rescue a dog without paying $400 and facing extreme scrutiny and probable rejection::p

I hope she has someone who loves her and that they are reunited. However, if she's as cute and fun loving as you describe, it shouldn't be too hard to find a home....especially if you're looking to adopt another.;)

I'd call local vets and put some signs up around town and where you found her. Definitely call shelters too! Years and years ago my mom had female GSD stolen off her front yard. Though she knew she was stolen (saw the tire marks) she called shelters, vets, etc and gave her the description. A few months later they must have got sick of her extreme separation anxiety so they dropped her off back at my mom's place, but my mom wasn't home and the car behind them picked her up thinking she was just being dumped, and brought her to the pound. Although months later, the pound recognized her description and called my mom.

eta: I'd describe her as "terrier mix" or something like that. A little bit more specific but they can describe her to you using color, size, sex, age, any unique characteristics or markings, etc.

Wow! What an ordeal that was!

I WISH we could keep her! I don't think that's an option. But she is fun and sweet and she adores my sister, haha.

Here she is, post bath and looking MUCH better! She's been dubbed Ada for the time being.

I am thinking yorkie mix? Schnauzer?

She is so funny playing with the tennis ball, she'll throw it up in the air and then chase it then throw it again and again.

Nothing on the local craigslists so far.

ETA: The tags/collar are Nikki's old collar I had lying about. She's about the same size as the shelties, really.

I wasn't around at that time but from the sounds of it definitely was!

I even left a little bit out of the story, too. The lady who picked her up thinking she was dumped didn't take her right to the pound - she first took her home and went off to work, and only took her to the pound when she came home to find her whole house ripped apart.

Poor Shadow! From home, to the "dognappers", back home, to some lady's house, to the pound, and finally back home again. No wonder she ended up having issues!

I wonder if that's what's wrong with my dogs. :pIt's the story of their life. They go back and forth between two houses when I'm in the Seattle area, then back to Idaho, then in a few months, back to Seattle again. LOL.

No, seriously, that was a lot for the poor thing, all in the course of a short time and not knowing what was happening. Well, it turned out happily...that she got back to her own home finally.

Agree with Tucker... I would just say "found dog on x road." Small dog is a selling point. If someone is missing their dog they will call that ad for sure.

You could put fliers on a telephone pole at the nearest intersection. "FOUND DOG ON THIS STREET" and your number. You could put up a flier at your nearest big grocery store/general store/feed store. Anything that is close by and populated. Other than that and of course informing local AC, not much you can do. I would actually give them a flier to put up as well so there is less room for a shelter-owner communication error.

Does craigslist have to approve postings? I made a post but now I can't see it anymore. I want to make sure the post is up there.

My dad keeps going on and on and on about how she's so sweet and looks just like his old childhood dog (which she does, only he was solid grey). Uh oh... :p

She is so cute! She make me think of a mini Benji. :)

She's awfully lucky you guys found her, too.

I wish but he says hell no. I can't afford another dog at the moment either. :( If I could, she's very tempting! I'm not usually a terrier type person but she's just so fun and happy it's contagious. I can't imagine someone's not out there missing this dog.
