I really don't get it... can someone explain it to me?! Why are these so popular????
All the parents at work are scrambling trying to get some for their kids, but there sold out at ALL of the nearby stores. Someone got their hands on one, and brought it into work and everyone was freaking out about it.

Uh... its a little hamster on wheels. You can get one at any pet store in the cat aisle :rofl1: :lol-sign: Maybe I'm missing something ???

Zhu Zhu Pets Hamsters

OMG, those are really cute!

Maybe kids will get those instead of real hampsters.... sounds like a good thing to me. (Not that I have anything against hampsters, it's just that most of the kids who get them should not own pets at all.)

Cute. Since I have a small stuffed hamster collection I might get one. Did I admit that LOL! The gift shop at work gets the cutest little stuffed animals and hamsters and guinea pigs are my favorite. The cats end up dragging them around the house anyway.

And omg was there a chipmunk in the coming next year thing?!

Why can't I come up with some goofy thing and make a million before its tossed aside for the next fad?

It's like, motorized, and you build a city of tubes for it and stuff, and the creators lucked into it with their production to create just the right level of scarcity to create this huge buzz about it... so now every kid wants one. There's also a level of collectibility to it (Beanie Baby style) from what I understand - not just the pets but accessories and, of course, all the different "rooms" for their house of tubes...

Also I want to get one to put into the little ball and let it loose so Auggie can chase it until the batteries die.

ETA: I should note I saw something on the news about this a couple weeks ago in Chicago and apparently the company was on the verge of bankruptcy before they found this idea. The guy has tried other ideas and struck out a lot.

There was an article a few weeks ago in the Toronto Star about it. The parents they interviewed who were waiting in line at ToysRus were happy to get this but didn't want real rodents. This was the much better compromise to them as they found real pets too big a responsibility and often icky.

It's like a artificial hamster you don't have to feed or change the litter of.. lol. I guess I would have liked that as a kid.

I'm kinda laughing at the accessories though...

no more cleaning cages, buying feed and bedding! no more heart break because these dont die!
And you cannot house more than one hamster together or they will fight, this way you can have as many as you want living together.

and in my experience hamsters BITE! these cant bite!

Without the scarcity they likely wouldn't have gotten the attention that's now caused everyone to want one. I'm sure they'll pump out more before Christmas now that there's a huge market.

I've never heard of them though before today.
