IMO, NO DOGS means NO DOGS, regardless of size.
But only if it says NO DOGS. And I think it's up the business owner as well. They can give an exception to a rule if they want--it's their store. My mom has carried Scandal with her to go window shopping downtown, and you'd be surprised how many times she's been invited into stores that say NO PETS.

People who carry dogs in purses aren't all holier-than-thou snobs who just flaunt laws and rules. Many of them respect signs and store policies, and will leave quietly if an objection is raised. So I don't see the problem.

I don't have a problem if someone asks if their dog is allowed in a store before taking it in- regardless of breed/size.

anyways, my dogs would probably freak if you stuck them in a carrier. We take them to one mall here that allows dogs (but some individual stores don't), but we take the toys on a lead.

Although I agree with Milo, I also have to agree with Gemp...

With Maddie, you'd be surprised where she was allowed to go. She's not a toy dog, and I never carry her. I was visiting family one time around Mansfield, and we needed to pick up some horse shampoo at the TSC in the area. It was terribly hot outside, so I was going to wait in the car with Maddie (and the AC lol) while she ran in to get some. She went in and asked if the dog could come it. They asked her what kind, she said cocker, they said Sure, Come on in!! :)
She walked on a leash the whole time, and was very quiet. Only one person asked to pet her... it was a great experience.

Later, when reflecting on it, I figured that if I'd had Missy instead of Maddie, we would've had to wait in the car... Which I was planning on doing in the first place.
There wasn't a sign that said "No Dogs", and I didn't have a carrier...

Back to the OT - 'to each their own'. As long as a dog knows how to walk, and gets opportunity to do so, carriers don't really bother me. I do think its annoying that they don't walk, but its not my dog and not my business. I've yet to meet a toy without plenty of energy to 'keep up' on walks, and Yes even Hikes ;)

With clothes, Maddie has a couple hoodies. I think shirts with writing are occasionally amusing, and the hoodies keep Maddie's nekkid back warm in winter, but that's only occasionally. As with anything, I don't mind clothes in moderation. I really don't like the multi-piece elaborate outfits (pants, tank top, bandana, hat puh-lease), but as I said before, to each their own. I don't know them, or their dogs, so can't judge on that initial experience.
I'm sure people may know what first impression it has on others - but that's there business

Oh, Scandal aka Her Royal Foofoo-ness LOVES it. She gets all excited when she sees the purse, and will jump in on her own. I guess she likes sightseeing.

Leaving quietly...if a sign is posted they should even be in there.

Again...ONE incident is all it takes to ruin things for EVERYONE. With the amount of stupid people that own dogs it's a mere matter of time.

Our Home Depot used to allow dogs...until an idiot with a dog in a cart bit some child in the store...no dogs anymore.

If you are SHOPPING...you cannot watch your dog 100% of the time...and IMO that is setting someone's dog up to fail. It's also disrepectful to those with fears or allergies that are not expecting to find a dog in a store intended for human use.

I prefer to not have dogs in stores...because I have seen TOO many people engrossed in shopping not even notice that child approaching their Yorkie's face hanging out of their bag...

actually it's not jealousy in my case. It's worry that because SOME people do not obey rules and in some cases LAWS...others will have to bear the consequences IF something ever happens. I get annoyed when people do not STOP at a stop sign or red light too...I get anoyed when people choose to ignore laws and rules...it's just something that bothers me, because it shows the kind of entitlement "that rule doesn't apply to me" that is indicative of the root of many many problems in this country.

ETA: Bottom line? Those people in the "no dogs allowed" place with a dog, are pleasing themselves, thinking of themselves, and only themselves...and yeah...that's bothersome to me. respect for rules and one's fellow man...is apparently a lost art.

So you disagree with dogs in stores, and not necessarily dogs in purses? I can understand your viewpoint almost completely.

The only opinion in your post I don't agree with is the part about people not being able to watch their dogs 100% of the time while shopping. If that's the case, people shouldn't walk their dogs while jogging, down to a local street fair, or even have in the car while driving.

There has to be some kind of acceptable risk. I shouldn't have to keep my eyeballs glued unerringly to my dog every time I leave the house with him. IMHO, the whole point of training a dog is to be able to go out in public situations like that without worry. I think it's unreasonable to avoid a place because there just *might* be something to momentarily detract your attention from your dog.

Maybe you shouldn't, but there are a lot of dog owners I simply do not trust and I feel they should have their eyes glued to their dog(s). Not everyone is as responsible.. not everyone trains their dogs to do a simple task such as "sit".

I certainly wouldn't want to be the catalyst for a law banning dogs from public places, such as malls, because I turned my head away for a split second to buy a bra from VS and my dog snapped at the hand of a child. A mall is simply no place for a dog. What enjoyment do they get out of that? I'd rather take my dogs to a beach, a park, hiking.. somewhere outdoors where they can enjoy themselves. Being couped up in a carrier, being toted from store to store and not having the opportunity to walk, smell, have their minds work... it's sad and people take advantage.

I can see the carriers for short periods of time, for transport purposes.. but just so Fido can go with everywhere? Not so much. I'm actually wondering what someone will think of next.. how else we can disrespect our canine companions...

ETA: We were in Home Depot awhile back... a store generally known for allowing dogs... dogs that can behave... well, we had to dodge dog poop on the way out.. some idiot let their dog poop all around the exit.. how disrespectful and rude... ruined it for everyone else because that ONE owner was selfish enough to take their dog into the store but not responsible enough to clean up after it. Bad apples.. they ruin it for everyone.

I see no reason to take your dog into a grocery store... however, I also find it hilarious that people commented how "gross" it is for pets to be around food... trust me I meet many people who are dirtier then the dogs I meet... I would rather those dogs be in a store near food then those people.

glad none of you live near me... i live in the most animal friendly place ever and LOVE IT

1st bolded; The dogs enjoy being with their owners. That's one of the main joys that dogs get.

2nd bolded; My dogs do use their senses, when they're in the bag. They smell things, see things, and hear things that they wouldn't if they were just cooped up in the house all the time. They get to be around people, and be socialized. Socialization is one of the best things for a dog.

3rd bolded; Why wouldn't you want to be with your dog all the time?

Not arguing, really, just putting my opinion on it in.
I don't think dogs should go to grocery stores though, I agree on that one.
I've seen people with them in wal-mart, and I have no problem with it at all, I usually go up, and ask if they're friendly, and if I can pet them. But I wouldn't bring mine in, just because I don't like confrontations, and if someone had something bad to say about it, it would bother me.

There's a difference between "no pets" and animal friendly. There are lots of animal friendly places in neighboring cities that I love as well. But these places are more... responsible and take animal friendly seriously. :)

I think you should ask if it's allowed, then respect the store owner's rules. I still don't see a problem taking a dog in a carrier or on a lead where you have permission to.

Now, if you're ignoring rules, then yeah, there'd be a problem.

well everyone on here is making it seem like dogs shouldnt go anywhere except the dog park... where I live dogs go in Macys, Bloomingdales, Malls, all kinds of stores, people even have them in restaurants... and if someone made a nasty comment to them... they would get typical New Yorker Charm in return;)

1st bolded; The dogs enjoy being with their owners. That's one of the main joys that dogs get.

I can understand that, but when my dogs are with me, they are on their feet, we are engaging each other.. throwing the ball, walking, playing in the water, cuddling on the couch... they aren't in a mesh bag while I go shopping in the mall or what have you.

2nd bolded; My dogs do use their senses, when they're in the bag. They smell things, see things, and hear things that they wouldn't if they were just cooped up in the house all the time. They get to be around people, and be socialized. Socialization is one of the best things for a dog.

How are they socialized if they are in a bag? How do they get to properly greet people and use their own instincts if they are are being pushed into people's faces/hands. How do they get to properly act as dogs in a bag?

3rd bolded; Why wouldn't you want to be with your dog all the time?

Because dogs are not meant to be everywhere. Should we allow dogs in hospitals, clinics, child care facilities, grocery stores, etc.. They don't belong everywhere humans get to go. I love my dogs and I enjoy spending time with them, which is why my husband and I are homebodies. If we do go places, we go places where dogs are already allowed... the park, the beach, etc. etc.. When we go on vacations, they go with and we make sure all places are dog friendly.

Places that are dog friendly, I suppose. To me, Macy's isn't dog friendly. I want my dogs to get the most out of experiences. I guess what it boils down to, is my 100lb dogs need more than what a dog that gets carried around in a tote, does. To each their own, but I still have opinions. :p
