I'm surprised by the number of people that would want their dog euthanized. I was reading about vets that won't euthanize a dog because of its owner's passing. They consider it unethical.
I supose it depends on the dogs. vets wont just euth because an owner died however if they are special dogs with histories of issues that the owners dealt with it can be the only safe option for the dogs. if the vet feels they could be a danger to a new home, or themselves they will do it. I think the owners just need to talk to their vets and make sure they are in agreement before something can happen. better to be prepared in all fronts.

If i where to pass away my partner would keep all our dogs and the ferrets. if we both passed my sister will take them all.

I also want Frodo... I'm positive my dogs would love him. They looove sassy Corgis, and so do I.
:rofl1: I'm holding you to that if I kick it!

What would be even more unethical would be to try and place a dog with a bite history and that had more issues than toes!
My vet knows Frodo, and I have no doubt that she would be willing to put him to sleep if I passed away. I wouldn't even fault Ryan AT ALL if I passed away and he decided to euth Frodo.

Bandit has quite a few people willing to take him actually. I think there would be a few fights over who got custody of him if I were to pass. Heck people always are trying to get me to give him to them and I'm still breathing.

For me, it would be my family. My husband and kids for Zorro and Elwood. My parents for Renee, Cleo, and Java (and any puppies). Now if I were gone and my parents were gone... I don't know. My hubby wouldn't manage the Wolfhounds very well. And in all honesty the chances are that Elwood would eventually get rehomed too as he is still pretty scared of men (even though my hubby is always giving him treats when he's around).

This. Its one thing when an elderly woman dies, and her children don't want to deal with her happy and healthy Poodle mix, so they bring it to the vet to have it euthanized. That dog could probably find a loving home/family and be perfectly fine for the rest of its days. That is the kind of situation that I think it would be unethical for a veterinarian to agree to euthanize - its out of convenience for the children, not out of whats best for the dog.

However, if you have a dog that is unable to be rehomed for whatever reason, and you're no longer able to care for it, I think it's completely acceptable to have the dog euthanized - because its best for the dog. My dogs were being fostered in rescue for a year and two years respectively, and no one wanted/were equipped to take them. What are the odds that they would be able to find another suitable (and willing!) home if I wasn't around? Slim to none.

I would choose to have Gambit PTS if his chosen home could not take him for several reasons
1) He is a coydog, so rescues will not touch him. Wolfdog rescues will not take him either
2)He has severe fear issues, and would need a very specialized home. People who think they want Gambit, find out after a day or two that they do not.
3) He is 2. That means 12-14 years of living with a dog that hates children, has to be put up when people visit, climbs fences, climbs trees, and is legally banned in a lot of places. That's a lot to ask of anyone.

That said, he is perfectly healthy. So a stranger to his situation, or one who has never seen him blow up, might see euthanizing him a a shocking choice. Those who know what it's like to live with a severely fearful dog who requires so much time and effort will understand. People who can handle these dogs usually have one.

this.

Belle would adapt easily to another home so rescue would be a great option for her... but NOT for Beezer. not because he has issues that make him difficult to rehome but Oh I just couldn't put that poor boy through that again.

he came to us an absolute WRECK after bouncing from home to home to home. It took him a REALLY long time for him to trust us and be comfortable and confident that he would be staying. After we had him for a year we were moving to a new house and the emotional toll that took on him was too great. he was sure he wasn't coming with us and that we were going to just leave him. It was the saddest thing I've ever seen.

he's been with us 5 years now and even still he cannot be taken to a kennel without suffering some emotional damage and even with the dog sitter it took two years for him to finally accept that the dog sitter wasn't so bad. Before he would find a "den" and he would stay curled up there and have to be enticed to come out to even go outside to the bathroom.

The older he gets the harder a rehoming would be on him. it's just in his best interest. somethings are worse than death.

I feel it would be absolutely unethical of me to rehome Abby to anyone else bar my parents. I also feel it would be absolutely unethical of me to just have her dumped in the shelter. No dog of mine will ever see the inside of a shelter and, being the way she is, she would (and should) most likely be euthed anyway. I wouldn't want her to spend her last day scared and anxious all for nothing except because people thought it 'unethical' for me to have her put to sleep.

In some dire circumstance that I'm still alive and absolutely cannot keep her and my parents couldn't either, she'd be euthed and I'd get it done myself and be with her as she passed. That scenario is extremely unlikely, because I don't just decide to give up my dogs and I can't really imagine being in that situation. However that is what I would do.

Vets can refuse to do it all they like, I'd just find one who would and I'd be there to make sure it was done (I'd be there regardless), but I have heard of a few cases of dogs being left to be pts and vets going on to rehome them. THAT is unethical in my opinion.

Edit - btw, I trust my vet to follow through with my wishes.

I dont think bodhi would have much trouble finding a home... But my boyfriend is the person I have picked. He genuinely loves her like his own dog, and she loves him. Plus I know hed do everything she needed how I want.

Suzie is the family dog, so she'd just stay in this house. If everyone in this house died, she'd probably go to my sister and her husband, or possibly to my brother who thinks she's awesome, even if he's a big tough 6'6" guy.

I told Jin last night that if something happens to me, Zander is to be put down. I don't think he took me very seriously, and asked me why he couldn't just be rehomed. Sigh. So much for my confidence in him.

I don't think he sees just how BAD Zander can be without me around. He barely survived the year at my mother's without me. He's too skittish, too smart, too much of a brat. I can't even trust my husband with the leash while we are walking. There's no way I would rest in peace knowing he was in another home, with people he didn't know, at a senior age, stressing and running, and depressed. Nope.

Anyone would take Buzz. President of his fan club would get first dibs but I have a feeling Tim might want him.

Bailey is a bit more complicated. I am pretty sure my mom would take her though. Oddly enough she loves the weird beast and as long as there are no other pets, she's great.

Cats area whole different kind of stress!

ETA: I don't think Linds has answered so I'll answer for her: My dibs call would go into effect and Trav & Didgie would come to live with me.

And Laurelin, Mia could come live me too except I'm not so sure she would like living with my dogs lol.
Mia obviously needs to come live with Izzie so they can take over the world together.
I am holding you two to it! :p I honestly would trust either of you to find her a suitable home if you couldn't keep her.

This weekend I was staying with family because my AC went out and they complained all the time about my dogs. Anytime they'd do ANYTHING at all. I think they would definitely take them but I don't think it's the best place for them. They don't do much with their dogs. They also really hate screaming dogs.

Her breeder or Summer's breeder would definitely take them but I'd rather they go to Chazzers. Mia's contract is that she goes back to the breeder or the breeder approves her new home if I ever were to rehome her.

Mia honestly reminds me of a more athletic, better-raised version of my sister's dog Rylee lol. Rylee is a little 8lb spitfire with attitude to spare, totally devoted to my sister and extremely opinionated about the rest of the human race, and pretty much the rest of the world. Tons of drive but in her case it's unfocused due to training or lack thereof. Diabolically brilliant with her own agenda. I love her to pieces, she is just endless entertainment. And I would love to do agility with her even though she'd have to jump 4".

And one of Kim's favorite things in the world is to do things specifically to p*** Rylee off. And Rylee does not forget and definitely holds a grudge. Which is precisely why Kim does it, laughing all the way. Bratty herding dog.

So if Mia came to live here we'd just have to split the house lol. Mira and Kim could live together and Webster and Mia could live together :p

Not sure. Mum was a JRT, Dad was unknown.

She actually has a lot of body fringe, naturally, but they keep her trimmed.

She's cute! I can definitely see some JRT. I keep telling myself no terriers but I am finding I quite like some of the terrier mixes (especially with herding breeds).

I would probably try to get Cthulhu to my aunt. She's got a big ranch,.with lots of fenced in space from her dogs (they've passed). That way he wouldn't have to deal with apartment life anymore.
