Does anyone ever go away without their dog? And if so who do you get to take care of him/her?

We're going away for two weeks in May and I'm having such a hard time finding someone to look after my " zoo" The cats/hamster/fish/lizzard isn't such a problem. It's finding someone who's willing to look after penny (three walks a day...) and who has time to do it....

She was supposed to go to my mother in law but she's got a dog herself now who doesn't like other dogs at all (to the point where she can't be in one room with them without attacking them....) so that's not an option anymore. All my friends have families/houses/pets of their own so it's not easy for them to stay in my house for the two weeks....

Anyone ever put their dog in a kennel or somewhere else?
I hope I'll find someone, I'm already so sorry for having to leave her :( I worry no one else will take as good care of her as I would....

unfortunetely we NEVER go anywhere now because of the dogs. Our neighbors watched Hannah once and they forgot all about her. I am so worried what we'll do with the dogs when we have the baby. I guess Mark will have to go back and forth from the hospital to take them out and let them run around and everything. I don't think Foxy would take too kindly to strangers coming in and feeding him and letting him out. He doesn't like strangers one bit.

I trust nobody with my dogs. If I leave, my dogs stay with my parents. If they leave, I stay home with the dogs. If we all need to leave, we either bring the dogs with us or one of us makes the sacrifice and stays home.

If there was an emergency and I had to leave the dogs home, Dakota could stay with the owners of his Border Collie friends.
There is nobody that I would ever trust Ripley to. He simply doesn't trust or befriend other people. He tolerates them and will be friendly to them once he gets that they are acceptable to have in the house, but if they came to our house while we were not home, I doubt he would ever let them touch him, much less take care of him. Were he ever to get out and run off in the hands of a pet-sitter, they would never be able to get near enough to catch him.

As for my future puppy, I'm pretty sure boarding is out of the question. :p

We have a great kennel here in London Called Country Paws Boarding. We leave Teddy there when we have to go away or if we just want a night to ourselves out of the house (Like when we stayed at the hotel) I see nothing wrong with taking your dogs to a kennel. I mean people take their kids to baby sitters whats the difference. Country Paws is a nice farm land with lots of play space and they get LOTS of info from you about your dog before you leave. The questionnaire consisted of questions like... I like to play with other dogs yes or no I sometimes hump other dogs yes or no My favourite game to play is_______ My favourite toy is _______ Etc Etc. They are great with the dogs and Teddy always gets excited when he goes there lol

We found a great pet sitter that the girls love. But if possible a family member or friend takes care of my babies.

Zeus has a wonderful kennel he goes to. Or, he stays with my parents.

If you can find a good kennel, they are lifesavers. Zeus' kennel is actually his vet's office. The clinic has a small boarding kennel on the premisis, and Zeus loves it. He gets to play with other dogs all day. And since Zeus is such a well-behaved boy (and the vets and staff adore him), he also gets to hang out at the receptionists' desk during the day to play greeter with everyone. And obviously, there's always a vet on call. :D

my kids have offered, but we've never gone anywhere since having the dogs. IF I had no option, tho...our vet also operates a kennel. I've met a couple of the people who work there, and they seem pretty decent. :)

Luckily I;ve got the girls to take Chip, but last year EliN and I boarded Huinter and Chip at a great kennel. They even had us do a few dry runs for nothing for a few hours to let the dogs feel more comfortable. For extra, they took the dogs out in their fenced in fields and they could play and run. They were kenneled next to each other and had large outdoor runs . I do have a neighbor you would come over, but I really feel more comfortable with good kenneling.

Same exact thing here. Also if worse comes to worse my sister would dogsit Pixie for us. Pixie loves visiting to my sisters because her daughter Jenny is there as well and so they play (Pixies daughter not my sisters). But usually 99% I take Pixie with me everywhere I go. It is rare that i can't when I travel take her with me.

My parents will take care of them, but I really avoid having to leave them. When we have gone somewhere, Kharma and Bimmer stayed with Mom and Dad and Shiva went with us, as all three of them together (or Shiva and Kharma together) are too much to ask anyone to try to wrangle. Bimmer and Kharma are the tightest, and Kharma minds Bimmer the best, and I trust the two of them to be more civilized away from me. Shiva I don't trust out of my sight for a second. She'll cry and carry on the whole time I'm gone. She even does it to Charley if I leave the house and he's there. The weird part is, though, if we both leave, Shiva goes and lays down in the laundry room and is perfectly content to be quiet until I get back home . . . Then she wails and carries on until she's mauled me sufficiently

I seriously doubt any kennel would take my bunch, or that I'd trust any kennel that would be willing to take the Riot Grrrrls, lol!

I leave my dogs at the boarding place I work for. But even if I didn't work there and get free boarding, that's where'd they stay when the rare occasion comes up where they can't go with me. It's expensive, but you get what you pay for when it comes to boarding I think.
