OMG.. Cockers pee EVERYWHERE.. why'd you get one?

Ugh, I hate that. I asked a lady one time and ask if I could pet her puppy, not knowing if it was a Springer or Cocker, so I ask the breed. And she told me "I would never own a Cocker again, that thing peed EVERYWHERE" "And Springers never do that"

Worst is we do submissive pee. So people wanna be all like SEE they ALL do that. It's nothing like it was.. And it's hit and miss. If we got to see people daily in random environments it might improve to stopping I think. I hope Smudge can maybe feed her confidence some as he's super outgoing and doesn't pee..

Oh boy, a thread I can really dig into....

Hannah:

Is that a horse?

How much does HE weigh?

Does he bite (as if big automatically equals evil)

How much does HE eat?

Does "it" live inside? (Disgusted face when I say yes.)

Where's it's saddle?

Is that part greyhound, mastiff, boxer, bloodhound, etc... ?

You mean it's still growing? :yikes:

Are you gonna breed her?

Why don't her ears stand up?

My friend had a lab (great dane, german shepherd, or other random breed) that's bigger than yours.

Is that one of them racing dogs?

Can I ride it?

My previous danes:

All of the above plus:

referring to my harles - Is that a dalmation?

Me: No, it's a harlequin great dane

Them: Are you sure it's not a dalmation? Great Danes don't come in that color.

It can really be tiring to take a great dane in public sometimes. I don't mind people who don't know, I'm more than happy to educate folks about my breed. It's the ones who ARGUE with me about what my dog is that really irk me.

Dusty (7-year-old Golden) just gets a lot of "OOOH look at the golden RETRIEVER!", wanting to know either what we feed him or IF we feed him, and wanting to know if he's a puppy because he's so small (he's right in the middle of the breed standard's height range).

Boo the field Lab, pet people want to know if he's a Greyhound because he's not fat, agility people want to know if he has any BC in him because he's not fat and actually wants to do agility, the few that actually recognize him as a Lab run up to him and pet/hug him because Labs are great with kids, so they get slimed in the face :p

Madison:

Is he really a chihuahua? He's SO big!
- He weighs 6.5lbs
Chihuahuas can't have floppy ears!

Rylie:

Awww, is she a teacup?!
She's so little!

Chloe:

Chihuahuas don't come in that color!
Is she a husky puppy?

People always say "look at the little rats" when they see my dogs  I also get comments that chihuahuas are horrible, neurotic little dogs. However, once people meet my dogs they say that they've changed their views on chihuahuas. A couple of people have even told me that they want a chi after being around mine.

Phoebe never really gets any comments other than the usual, she is such a good girl, so calm...........and they do recognize her as a smooth coat Border which is amazing, she was marked as a mix, but the Vet disagrees about the mix **shrugs**

Orson........where to begin??

Is that a Rottie?........ but at least they do have the right colors in mind.
Aren't those the dogs where their brain outgrows their skull and it drives them insane? (Kevin's good friend, and this is a retired military, and all round' pretty intelligent guy)
Oh sh!t, those dogs turn on their owner after a certain age  Yep, as soon as that second birthday rolls around I must trade him in for a puppy or sleep with one eye open! LOL

I never really got many negative comments about him when he was a pup, but the bigger he gets the more fear he seems to attract **sigh**

Ok, a couple more....

"Got any puppies for sale?" I guess since I have more than one purebred I must be breeding them....ugh

"How much does she/he weigh?" And then when I answer it's "oh, my friend has one that's 200 pounds!" Uh huh.....:p

Most people would see Blondie sitting on the porch looking away and say, Oh look! What a gorgeous dog! And then he immediately jumps up and runs to bark at them and then they go, "Oh, he's meaner than we thought".... Of course he's NOT mean, he's just NOT a stuffed-cute-little puppy....

Other people ask if he's really destructive and hyper, because he's a Cocker Spaniel (rolleyes). And then they go on telling me horror stories of how they couldn't keep a Cocker because they are a pest and too hyper. At first we were annoyed by those comments (you guys have NO idea how often we get them) but now my parents and I just say: "You know, it's the way you raise them...."

Other comments are:

Does SHE really sleep in your parents' bedroom?
What do you mean, you have a baby album with HER pictures?
Why doesn't SHE have curly hair? (He's not an American cocker, hello....)
Cockers don't come in that color.... is he a mix?
Why does he have green eyes? (do I know, really....)

I still don't get comments about Christie because I'm hiding her from the world..... LOL just kidding, she doesn't have enough sets of shots yet, but people who have seen her say she has a spoiled-brat face already :p

With the Border Collie boys I always get:

Border Collies are crazy!
Do you have sheep?
Are they a breeding pair?
Are they twins? (which they actually are and people get all shocked when I say yes).

Then I also get a lot of the time when people send more then 5 miniutes with Spanky is:

Have you ever watched Mad About You? He's just like Muary.

I've gotten that one a few times. My dog isn't dumb. Just a goof.

Most people completely ignore Bimmer if one of the Riot Grrrls is there :( Last night when I was walking Bimmer and Kharma a woman asked me (the usual) if Kharma was a Bloodhound and when I told her no, she was a Fila Brasiliero asked me if I was sure and someone hadn't just sold me a Bloodhound with a fancy name. THEN, when her husband asked about Bimmer, she butted in and said "oh, he's just a German Shepherd Sooner . . . "

Kharma gave her the Baleful Glare and when we walked off Kharma kept glaring at her over her shoulder, lol . . .
HAHA! Can Boomer and Tilly join Bimmer's "what am I, chop liver?" club? Kassie tends to grab peoples attention, who could care less for it. While Boomer is almost doing back flips in order to get someone to pet him.

For the most part I don't get any breed stereotype sayings about my dogs. Most people love to come over and pat them and tell me they find them cute. I did get one person asking me what breed Kassie was once. They thought she was a Shih Tzu mix. And too be fair to that person Kassie had full face and with that poorly bred short nose of hers I could see it being confusing.

The one thing that does get me upset is when I get people stopping me to ask if Kassie is a tea cup poodle. I'm always willing to educate them about it but it gets tiring and old. I feel like putting a sign on her that says "I'm a Toy Poodle, I don't fit in a Tea Cup"

Some of the comments Duke gets are (He's a mix of Dutch Shepard and Australian Cattle dog, he has the brindle coat of the Dutch. He also has very large massive ears)

I take him to the leash free but if its too busy I keep him in the small pen by himself cause he gets easily over stimulated with to much commotion and he is not great with ill behaved children running around the leash free.

"Is he by himself cause he's pitt?"
- He's by himself cause I cant stand stupid owners on busy days at the dog park.

"Is he vicious?"
- Just cause Duke is in a pen by himself doesnt make him vicious. If he was vicious he wouldn't be anywhere near a leash free dog park to begin with.

But the one that made me laugh the hardest and still to this day was a friend of mine. He was drunk as he said it but I have heard it from sober people...

"His ears are huge! I bet he can hear real well"
- LOL! That one just doesnt even get a responce.

What a beautiful dog.....what kind of mix is he? Or is he a pitbull, akita, or GSD cross :yikes: Acd's aren't the norm around here but still  Oh, and when they do ask what type of dog Caiza is before they make a guess and I tell them ACD it is immediately followed by...Oh, they are so hyper!

Yeah, if they don't get the right physical and mental stimulation then yeah they will be ;)

We've only had Digby for a month. But comments are:

"What kinda of dog is that?
"Is he a Lab?"
"He's small for a lab!"
"Ohhhh so cute!"
"Wow.... he's so gentle"
"Has he been eating Black liquorish?" (He's got a pink and purple tongue) (ummm yes i let my dog eat people food! duh!)
"He's so fluffy!"

Then when you tell them he is a lab chow X...

"Ohhhh is he mean?"
"Chows are such aggressive Dogs"

we don't get a lot really.

mac has been called a "lovley doberman puppy" a fair few times eventhough she has white on her chest.

sophie often gets mistaken for being some big mean dog, and she's the best behaved out of all of them.

i once had a friend tell me

"Milo's too much fun for me."

i think that was her polite way of saying "How in the heck do you put up with this psychotic demon dog?"

Wally the Greyhound:
Is that a Great Dane? (nowhere near the size)
He's timid, huh? (he's a very outgoing and confident guy)
I was going to get a Greyhound but they have no personality (riiiiiiiiiiight)
I bet he likes to run (actually he doesn't, he likes to sleep and snuggle)
She's so pretty (It's a boy, you can see his penis without even bending over)

Athena the Alapaha:

That's a pit bull (they don't even ask, they just tell me)
Stay away from her, kids, she's mean (when she sees kids and can't get to them she gets VERY vocal and throws hissy fits . . . she LOVES kids, damnit!)
What's his name (HER name is Athena . . . she is wearing a bright pink collar with her name on it, after all!)

surprisingly few people can readily identify my dogs as pit bulls. it's amazing how many people jump back with betrayed looks on their faces when i say "pit bull" even if they've been shmoozing my dogs for quite some time.

lots of people ask if they're mean, if they bite, if i want to breed them to their dog (they're speutered, thanks). people snatch their kids out of the way from time to time. i overheard one lady telling somebody else that people only cut their dogs ears like that when they fight them (in reference to luce, whose ears are fully intact, just sticky-up). sometimes it gets tiresome, but mostly i'm able to just roll my eyes and smile sweetly.

and LOTS of people think luce is a puppy, for some reason. i don't know if it's because she's small (17" and 45 pounds is quite appropriate for a pit bull, thanks) or because she's a lunatic or what. she's four and a half!

Charlie the cocker:

"cockers are mean"
-yeah thats why hes wagging his tail and looking at you with those big soulfull eyes for you to pet him
"cockers are dumb"
-thats why he knows more tricks and is better behaved than most 8 yr old children
"cockers are hyper"
-when charlie is quietly lay waiting to go
"they pee everywhere/cant be housebroken"
-umm, not charlie.

Rosie the long haired chihuahua
"wow thats a realy small german shepard puppy"
-thats because shes a chi

Vixie the long haired chihuahua
"thats a papillion"
-umm no its not, its a long haired chihuahua
"no its not chihuahuas dont have hair"
-*blink* i think they mean chis are supposed to have short hair but...NO shes a long haired chi.
"shes big for a chihuahua"
-shes only 5.4lbs, WELL within the breed standard

Dodger the long haired chi.
"is it a teacup?"
-*looks confused* no its a chihuahua
"no i mean is it a teacup chihuahua"
-no hes just a small chihauhua, teacups are made in china and live in the cabinate, chihauhas are dogs and can be anything from 2-6lbs
"shes so pretty"
-shes a HE!

of course the common "chihuahuas are mean/nippy/evil/yappy" are common
and of course i get people claiming that im "trying to be paris hilton"
*shudder*

but hey, thats what i get for owning chis.

This isn't breed specific at all, but someone once walked up to me, and asked "Has she had puppies?" I answered "No, she's spayed." They just walked away without saying anything.

I've had someone point out that she's a Doberman. No, really? I honestly had no idea.

Then there was the lady who told her son to stay away from crazy dogs. The way she said it, crazy roughly translated to 'demonic, vicious baby killer.' I'd say she's a bit odd, but certainly not crazy.

There are those that will see her, say how gorgeous she is and make all over her, then they ask what breed she is. When I say Doberman, they can't back away fast enough. Because now that they know her breed, she's going to eat them? You said she was gorgeous and nice and calm and well-mannered before, why not now that you know she's a Doberman?

Then there are those that just think she's the coolest ever. Definitely correct with that one.
