I think the most important thing to do when a dog comes close to you, is to be calm and watch what are the signals that the other dog gives out. If you panic I think your dog will panic with you. now If the dog is agressive thatsanother story!

Well in our town i have a spare slip lead. I leash the dog (aggressive or not) and call it in, and take it to the kennel, but then i am also the town animal control officer, and they follow me EVERYWHERE, even on my days off i can't get a break.

When i have my three walking they are on leash around town, if we are out in the forest we are on e-collars. All of them are made to approach in a friendly fashion if the owner of the approaching dog agrees, if not they are to stay "with me" and go about their business.

If a dog approaches us in a threatening manner i have a bite stick and pepper spray (and bear spray--and since we are in bear country a side arm as well)
I usually make a loud "AUGHT" and "PHST" and they usually take off. If they are friendly and no leash collar and such i do the first paragraph and usually end up citing the owner for having their animal at large!

Best thing to do, DEEP breaths and do what you can to make your dogs calm and stop or dissuade the other dog, if that does not work, stick, rock whatever, in most states you have the right to defend yourself and your "property" from damage. And yes, dogs are property in the eyes of the law.

Good Luck
Being surprised always sucks, but you'll get to the point where you can "handle" it.

Everytime I take the dogs separately for walks it seems like I meet at least two loose dogs on our walks! I don't know what it is about my town but people don't really pay attention that much, but it makes me nervous with our Siberian. Our Lab is fine, she just wants to meet and isn't too worried. Our Dachshund wants nothing to do with strange dogs, but I just pick her up. Ruby (Sibe) doesn't like dogs in her "space" and the teeth come out pretty quickly. Usually I have enough warning to get Allie (Lab) and Ruby behind me so I can keep the dogs separate long enough to find the owner who is usually somewhere close by. I haven't run into a loose dog that was being outwardly aggressive yet (knock on wood), it just seems like my town has a lot of people that don't mind letting their dogs wander or don't keep a good eye on them. I try to have banaka on me and keep track of the houses that usually have loose dogs so I can be prepared. I've had more trouble with dogs ON leashes with people who don't seem to realize that just letting your dog run right up to strange dog could have bad consequences!

Wait.

You're an AC?

And you . . . . actually DO something about roaming dogs? I mean, besides telling people that if they'll catch and restrain the dogs you'll come by sometime and pick them up??????

That was mild compared to the collie incident and the collie was, in theory on a leash.

Between you and NoodleRubyAllie, I've now been outed. /me sighs

For me it depends on the dog I am walking.

Aztec is friendly, loves all dogs, and isn't threatening in the least...and dogs usually feed off his calm energy and don't bother him.

Laika is fear aggresive, partially because she has been attacked five or six times by off leash dogs that run up. (She is a real intense looking dog even when she is relaxed, I think the curly tail and blue eyes...people that know nothing about dogs constantly ask if she is a wolf hybrid) So with her if a dog runs up I either pick her up, or make her sit down calmly and I do my best get the dogs collar or block them.

I hate it when people are 100 feet away shouting to ask if my dogs are friendly, because I can never predict how Laika is going to react.
